I am entirely convinced that most “features” on modern devices are not “something consumers would have demanded”. Sure, different lenses is nice if you’re a hobbyist photographer, but do most people really need more than a single back-facing camera? Do most people want to have wireless earbuds at the cost of not having a headphone jack? Do most people want glass backs and other such gimmicks that make their device more fragile? I’ve been told for decades that the modern economic system is great because competition forces manufacturers to prioritize what is best for the consumers. But in the context of smartphones, it feels like the roles are completely reversed. Manufacturers come up with some bullshit and then mount psy-ops (ad campaigns, online astroturfing) to convince the population that it’s worth their money
Recently switched from a certain predatory fruity phone to a phone from a certain Dutch manufacturer that has removable battery and replaceable parts. At some point, it got water damaged, and the charging circuit stopped working. While I’m waiting for the replacement part to arrive, I can continue using it by charging the battery with a bench power supply. Feels good man!

If it wasn’t for flatpak making it easy to run proprietary / obscure apps on my weirdo little distro (Void Linux, one of the few remaining non-systemd distros) I would have switched to something mainstream like Debian long ago. People are gonna go with the distro that supports (i.e. has non-broken packages for) the apps they use. Having a cross-platform package manager makes it easier for small independent distros to exist and be useful, not harder.
EDIT: And while it’s true that Wayland adoption kills obscure X11 window managers, Wayland adoption also spawns a wide range of obscure Wayland compositors. Think hyprland, wayfire… It’s by far not all Gnome and KDE! If anything, we can expect more people making Wayland compositors as hobby projects, if Waylands claims about a simpler codebase are to be believed.

Yes, but is that not entirely expected? As far as I understand, compositors are complete implementations of Wayland’s display server specification, whereas window managers are just a helper program that, well, manages windows, while Xorg does the heavy lifting required to fully implement the X Window System protocol. So the only real difference that I see is that, in the X world, the “common parts” are managed by a separate process (Xorg), whereas in the Wayland world, they are managed by a separate library (wlroots). So a hobbyist developer trying to make a window manager in some obscure language would need to figure out how to communicate with Xorg in that language, whereas a developer trying to make a compositor in some obscure language would need to write wlroots bindings for that language. Maybe I am just ignorant, but those seem like comparable efforts to me.
And lastly, in the X world, the only (widespread) implementation of the X Window System protocol is Xorg, but, in the Wayland world, there are compositors that use wlroots, and those that don’t. So wouldn’t that alone indicate more fragmentation / diversity? Sure, there are more X window managers than Wayland compositors out there, but X11 has also existed for longer. In short, I don’t see how the Wayland system is more adverse to diversity of implementations than X
I use flatpak because I enjoy the sandbox as well. Nice to know that a zeroday in some obscure internet-enabled program won’t automatically grant the hacker access to my entire home directory. And as for xbps-src, I might as well submit my package to the official repos while I’m at it. Don’t get me wrong, I do want to eventually contribute to Void’s repos in some way, but when I have time for that. And right now, I don’t have time to essentially become a package maintainer just to be able to use the apps that I need to use.

For real tho, I could never come up with a good reason why I choose Linux over windows. But recently I tried Windows 11, and that finally made me understand. What are sticky keys? Why are you telling me the exchange rate of EUR to USD right now? Why do I need to put . in front of my username when signing in? Why can’t you just tell me that you want TPM and UEFI boot enabled instead of cryptically saying that my hardware is incompatible even though it is? There’s just too much crap going on for a dumb fuck like me to understand. I would like one boring linux desktop experience that hasn’t changed since 2003 please.
Just install a de-googled Chromium fork (ungoogled-chromium or Brave), and create a separate browser profile for Google Drive? Then it doesn’t matter if you have third party cookies enabled or not, your browsing data is completely isolated for your main profile. That’s what I do for almost every proprietary web-app I use (Discord, youtube, shopping services, whatsapp web, f*cebook, etc.). The only issue is that the profile picker gets rather crowded, but to overcome that I wrote a rofi script that lets me launch chromium profiles directly

Wine tends to work better for Wndows programs that already have a Linux port, because they depend on fewer mcrosoft-specific libraries… which is not very helpful most of the time, but it is the subject matter of the meme.

Jpeg XL (JXL) (not to be confused with Jpeg (JPG) or Jpeg 2000 (jpg2k) ) is another nice image format, which, IIRC, is only supported in Firefox.
When it comes to pronunciations of obscure computer acronyms, my favourite is btrfs (the filesystem), because I’ve never seen anyone advocate for any specific pronunciation, not even the devs/official documentation. Bee Tree Eff Ess? Bee Tee Arr Eff Ess? Butter Eff Ess? Better Eff Ess? Whatever bloats your goat!
I said it in another comment, but I’m actually working on a website right now, which happens to lazy-load a lot of images with Javascript. I think I’ll store all the images in webp, avif, and JXL formats, and have the javascript code automatically load the one which is supported by the browser. Hopefully if it takes off, it can promote support for modern image formats!
Do you write postscript by hand? I once got the change to take a postscript programming class, but sadly I didn’t (I wish I did tho). How does it compare with SVG? I know SVG has a lot of limitations (for example, you can’t change the color of a shape filled with a pattern), so I guess eps’ turing completeness lets you overcome things like that, since you can just program in whatever functionality you need?

This makes me wonder, is there a way to make communities that are inherently immune to trolls? Lemmy is for sure an improvement from r*ddit, since if an instance’s admins become corrupt, users have the freedom to relocate to another instance. Would a social media platform with no reputation/voting system be even more resistant? On one hand, it would wipe out karma bots and account trading. But on the other hand, it would make it easier for someone to push propaganda by spamming from multiple accounts. Currently, imageboards seem to generally have less shilled content, but that may just be because imageboards tend to produce smaller and more niche communities (not to mention places like /pol, which most advertiser simply don’t want to associate with)
