sxan, to comicstrips in I used to think X

I also believe that a lot of conspiracy theories were started as jokes, with a core group of reasonably smart people LARPing a ridiculous position. What I wonder about is how many of those people LARPed so long and hard that they came to believe their own BS.

Half of he internet is shit, so - again - I personally would not lament its loss. My mom, who lives in games like Farmville these days, probably would, but she’d probably be healthier and happier if she took up knitting again.

Buy yourself a couple of supreme court judges. They’re a bargain these days.

Well done; smooth… but also glazed.

sxan, to memes in So that's it, huh? We're some kind of Suicide Squad?
@sxan@midwest.social avatar

I went into it expecting it to have nothing to do with the books. I found all the characters’ behaviors irrational and frustrating, with the exception of the emperor.

And I’m getting really sick of incompetent protagonists and impossibly flawless antagonists. I think that’s just a reflection of the zeitgeist of the world’s masses, but that’s another discussion. Suffice to say I’m tired of it being the only trope used in SciFi TV anymore.

sxan, (edited ) to privacy in why don't you guys scrobble?
@sxan@midwest.social avatar

Depends on how much you let them link it back to you, but you’re absolutely right: social media is a privacy nightmare. It can be mitigated; pick a Lemmy instance that doesn’t require an email, and don’t give out any identifying information, or just lurk. Many of us have multiple accounts on different servers, with carefully segregated personas. You do what you can; OP asked why (or why not) scrob. I see no reason to give out that information, only to give a company more information they can sell.

sxan, (edited ) to privacy in what are your recommendations for a good privacy friendly sms app?
@sxan@midwest.social avatar

Yeah, qksms’s handling of group messages is really klunky, too.

Deku SMS looks nice, but it doesn’t understand group SNS at all. Neither does Connect You (it also doesn’t have search-by-name for texts, and has trouble linking contacts to texts). Simple SMS is now verboten.

Despite warts, I’m stuck with qksms as well.

Edit Fossify Messages has been released on fdroid. It supports groups, looks nice, and is working for me so far!

sxan, to news in U.S. is sending a carrier strike group closer to Israel and will begin supplying munitions starting today
@sxan@midwest.social avatar

I was having this discussion worth my wife last night.

I’m hoping (but will not be shocked when it proves otherwise) that full-throated endorsement now will mean more effective censure latter when the Netayahu gvmnt begins a more obvious program of genocide.

If the US is reserved now, it weakens later admonishment. I don’t expect it to make a difference. Netanyahu’s brother was killed by Palestinian PFLP–EO militants, and he’s not exactly rational about them. He’s also a friend of Trump’s, and that’s definitely going to play into Biden’s responses.

Incidentally, I’ve heard some Israelis referring to the attack as “their 9/11.” I think that sums up how the current situation is being framed by the Netanyahu government pretty well.

Gobo’s been around and doing its alternative thing, successfully, for 20 years, so no. It’s not a problem.

sxan, to privacy in Golang telemetry (again)
@sxan@midwest.social avatar

As long as it’s opt-in (which it is), I’m not sure I understand the concern. You’d have to enable it.

Go has been routing module requests through GOPROXY since modules were introduced; it’s where all of the mod version is cached, so any time anyone builds a Go package from source, calls are made to the mother ship. Unless the builder is running their own proxy, which is mostly corps, who care less about this sort of telemetry. There are good, valid reasons for the main Go proxy, but it’s certainly also a valid concern that the Go core dev team is utterly deaf to.

In any case, the only thing that’s new is the telemetry which, as I mentioned, is opt-in. I don’t see any reason for new concern.
