I’ve bought only one thing, because it came up in a product search; I liked the design, and couldn’t find it elsewhere, so I ordered it. I wasn’t looking for a deal - I literally couldn’t find this thing elsewhere. While it was inexpensive, it was also cheap, and the quality was not worth even what I paid.

That was my introduction to Temu. Since then, I’ve looked for other things which I’d been browsing on Amazon, and which I’m pretty sure were made in China anyway. The price difference has been negligible, the options fewer, and the shipping on that one thing took so long that now I doubt I’d buy anything else from Temu.

I’ve bought stuff directly from Chinese manufacturers and been very satisfied, but never because of cost. Quality stuff from China (e.g.) is – IME – of comparable cost to what you find from US companies.

How is the state of tilig WMs? Last time I ried Wayland, mixing and matching WMs and status bars was really flakey, with font scaling and rendering issues. There are certain things I will no longer compromise on in a WM, and if I wanted to be forced to use a specific desktop to get a working graphical environment (functioning scaling, for instance), I’d use a Mac.

Herbstluftwm hasn’t been ported - is there a similar configuration file-less tiling WM? On X, I could also settle for bspwm; both WMs are completely configurable on the command line. How about bars? I’m using polybar right now, but there are a dozen to choose from under X, any of which I can use with whichever WM (and have it function properly).

Again, mere months ago, trying to get font scaling to work properly with the same scaling in all applications was messed up. Under X, if I set a font and size in any program (that supports font selection), I get the same apparent font size - because programs get fonts from X and the same code does all font rendering which makes everything consistent. How is that on Wayland, now, because that was a major deal-breaker last a couple of months ago.

I mean, it’s not my talking point. 2A is a key plank of the Rebublican platform, regardless of how little they can control Orange Putin. While addressing gun violence is a key plank in the Democrat one. Maybe discerning voters like yourself will change their votes based on this - I doubt any “gun nut” in central PA will. Trump doesn’t talk about guns, Biden does. Words speak louder than actions in American politics.

Frankly, I don’t think 2A is a topic Trump has an opinion about, or gives much thought to. He’ll pass whatever gun legislation he thinks will make him more popular, and after Las Vegas, throwing his weight behind legislation that the NRA itself had advocated and had been in the works for 2 years before he was elected (thanks, Obama!) was an easy win.

To be clear, I’m not a proponent of 2A. While I enjoy the hobby and indulge in ownership, I believe the 2A is anachronistic and unable to satisfy the purbose for which it was made. And we do have a gun violence issue in the US; if it were at all feasible to eliminate the 2A and all guns, I’d support it. I’m just saying that if you ask a random 2A MAGA which candidate is their choice on this point, they’ll say “Trump.”

This is brilliant, and it would explain so much! And I agree that the most interesting story arch is the one that has nothing to do with the novels (and the entire show shared very little with the novels, outside of some names).

I said that I liked few of the characters; I don’t know if that improves after the first season, but like you, I’m traumatized enough by S1 to be uninterested in watcing S2. I realized I’d spent the last 3 episodes literally shouting at the TV because of characters being so unreasonably stupid, and if there’s a literary sin I can’t forgive it’s characters doing stupid things as a plot device. “We need tension in this scene, so we’ll have this character refuse to get in the escape pod until the last minute, for some trivial reason.” It is infuriating, sloppy, weak writing, and I refuse to watch it.

Everyone who has ever served in any branch of the US military knows this fact.

In 2020, US gvmnt estimates were 19.4m living vets in the nation. With a population of around 331m, that’s around 6%. If you include the number of non-vets civilians who’s jobs directly support the military, and who therefore are also required to use metric in their jobs, this number will be higher - I couldn’t find population estimates, but it’s at least a couple percent as the DoD alone employs a million civilians. NASA employs around 17k, and anyone working for a company who works with NASA is going to have to use metric. I’d be shocked if the number of Americans who aren’t having to use metric at work, and are therefore aware that it’s a standard here, wasn’t at least 10%.

Nowhere near a majority, but certainly significant; over 20m people warrants “many,” surely?

I’ve had this ErgoDox for, like, 6 years. It has underlights, but no backlights, but also no home row keys. The entire time I’ve owned it, in the dark I’ve struggled to find the home row, often taking seconds to find my finger placement by feeling the edges of the keyspace. It’s been a constant source of irritation, but it never occurred to me to just buy some home row caps.

Anyway, I was tidying up to office the other day, and found a little packet that came with the keyboard containing home row caps. FML, but with a silver lining, right?

In the process of swapping out those two caps, I completely broke the J switch. So now I’m (temporarily) using a Kinesis Gaming keyboard and learning an object lesson about how utterly miserable row stagger is.

My point is that backlighting would probably have saved me a lot of grief; not as much as home row keys, but still better than nothing.

I'm so frustrated rn.

I have been distro hopping for about 2 weeks now, there’s always something that doesn’t work. I thought I would stick with Debian and now I haven’t been able to make my printer work in it, I think I tried in another distro and it just worked out of the box, but there’s always something that’s broken in every distro....

EndeavourOS is pretty good, too; also Arch-based with an easy installer.

The advantage to Arch-based-distros is rolling releases, and the Arch wiki instructions are more easily followed. And right now, the Arch wiki is probably the single best resource for Linux instructions and troubleshooting on the web.

It used to be, I’d start at DDG andwhen I didn’t find my results, I’d switch to Goog. Now I do this, but when I find even worse results on Google, I switch back to DuckDuck because query wrangling on DDG is more worthwhile. The starting results may not always be good on DDG, but they’re often better than Google.

However, very recently I’ve been starting on Searx on doing follow-up checks on Bing, and this has been working pretty well. I know DDG has to show ads, but lately they seem to take up the better part of the first page and aren’t helpful.

Google is completely out of the picture. Their results are just bad.

It even looks like there’s software thay lets it run on Linux. Was it accurate enough for, like, desktop use? Did he have to hold his head still?

It wouldn’t take much to make it impractical: being fussy enough that you have to think about using it while you are would defeat the purpose. Any inaccuracy, or not being granular enough, or requiring you to hold your head still, not working with glasses, or lag… those would all kill it.

Daily desktop use; I’d like to eliminate the repetitive stress and time it takes to move my hands off the home row, use a pointing device, and re-acquire the home row.

Also, I think Factorio would be fantastic if I could use both hands for hotkeys.

Headsets are probably not going top work for what I’d like to accomplish; a remote bar-style (some look little more than web cams, although I can’t imagine how they track without wide-set binocular cameras) that doesn’t require wearing a device would be optimal.

I couldn’t find a link to the sourcecode for WireMin. I’m skeptical of closed-source “privacy” apps, and organizations that recommend them. I would think they’d know better.

Of course, WireMin could be OSS and they just failed to link to it on the web site.

AMD+Wayland+dual monitor = Screen flickering

So…I have an…interesting behavior I’ve never had before with an Nvidia or integrated intel chipsets…I have now my AMD card plugged both to a normal HDMI monitor, and then to another HDMI TV. Both work well. However, when I turn the TV off… The monitor will start flickering. About three flickers every minute or so....

I was getting flickering when my monitors were on, last tine I tried Wayland a month or two ago. Probably not the same issue, but these sorts of issues is keeping me on X.

As someone else said, it’s similar to btrfs. bcachefs has a lot of functional overlap with btrfs, which is great. There have also been a few benchmarks showing that bcachesfs is faster for some situations (cold-cache warming, IIRC). One of the big advantages over btrfs is that bcachefs’s RAID is more robust - several of btrfs’s RAID levels have been marked as experimental and prone to data loss, for years. There’s been improvement in btrfs RAID lately; the skeptic in me believes this is directly a result of pressure from bcachefs, which is in a position to become a favored fs in Linux.

I Roved Out. Extremely NSFW, it would be categorized as porn. It is an incredible story, and is so despite the porn. The sex is so interwoven with the story, I can’t imagine a SFW version could ever be constructed, which is shame because it’s such good art, and such a great story. I can’t praise it enough. If graphic sex doesn’t bother you, I highly recommend it.

Blastwave. Short, so if you binge it it’ll be over quickly.

There have been other great recommendations I won’t repeat, but these two have exceptional art.

Edit someone else beat me to recommending Blastwave. It’s good.
