Yeah sorry, money is just so tight right now, we can’t find it in the budget…

By the way, this is Todd, your 3rd project manager. Should really help with increasing productivity and aligning with our new buisness strategy.

Oh, and your coworker Amy just put in her two weeks, so we will have to backfill that position sometime when the budget clears up. You can take on her responsibilities temporarily though.

Oh, and I’ll be in Ibiza for the next 3 weeks, talking to key internal stakeholders and top execs of our customers.

It’s not about prime real estate, it’s about increasing the redundancy of humanity’s survival. Two planets are better than one.

Jaytreeman,

In order to colonize mars, having a good space station in orbit would help out immensely. We're talking big enough to stretch out and hold a few hundred people.
The station would need to grow crops and have minor but flexible manufacturing.
At that point, why would you colonize mars vs just make more stations?

Urist,
@Urist@lemmy.ml avatar

For real, resource extraction is a big one. Finding ice means they can make, besides water, oxygen and rocket fuel. Not to mention that shelters for radiation are incredibly hard to make without a huge amount of mass, which we cannot efficiently get into orbit without a space elevator. Hence being able to extract it from the location of the colony, say dig into the ground or build thick walls with bricks made from soil, is necessary for long term survival of the inhabitants. I think it is cool that due to these reasons having air balloons over Venus might even be a better option due to it having a protective atmosphere.

Jaytreeman,

You can make a radiation field by running a large motor that would save you from the solar radiation.
In space you always have access to the sun. A cheap form of power. You need a lot more batteries if you're on the planet.

Venus is a much better idea over mars.

Didn’t know that it was feasible to create a radiation field by running a large motor. Not that I doubt you, but if you have a source I would be very happy to read more about it.

I’m pro USB C all the way, but I definitely appreciated the lightning connector. It’s smaller, fewer things to go wrong with it, less delicate… so to speak… at least the female side seems to be from my experience. The male side isn’t half bad either, but the cables apple used for their USB to lightning wires was basically trash. Every time I witnessed someone with a bad iPhone charging cable, the connector was generally fine and the wire was torn to shreds.

The biggest weakness of the standard was that it was stuck on USB 2.0. Beyond that it was pretty good.

I still like USB C more, both for speed and for how ubiquitous it is; but, being fair to lightning here, the center area were the pins are is a failure point, one wrong move and it’s toast. Granted it’s nestled in there pretty good and the chances of that actually happening is pretty small, but lightning doesn’t have this issue.

Lightning is far from perfect, but they did a good job… for the time. Right now the only benefit to lightning is twofold, it’s everywhere, and the connectors basically never broke with normal use. At the time micro-B was horribly fragile. C is way better than micro-B was, but I still think that lightning has the crown for durability IMO.

With all that being said, USB C all the things. Lightning was a shining example of a better way, and hopefully we learned from that. I don’t know what comes after USB C, but I hope the improvements are significant. It will be a while before C goes anywhere though.

Bartsbigbugbag, to memes in The EU has finally won this one!

Lightning was significantly ahead of the competition when it came out in 2012. Micro-USB is a terrible collection of ports. C came out two years later though, and quickly surpassed Lightning in almost every way.

WaLLy3K,

The amount of USB type ports I’ve seen where the ‘tongue’ has been absolutely mangled is mind boggling — an issue that Lightning completely bypassed.

For example, I’m repairing some kids PS5 and both back USB ports have had their pins twisted and the plastic snapped off. The HDMI port pins are lifting from the mainboard and the front of the unit is scratched to high hell. I see some of the worst treated tech at my job, and those plastic bits get damaged a lot. While Apple needed to move to USB-C six years ago with the iPhone X, I will respect Lightning for this one thing.

null_recurrent,

And yet I never have USBC problems, but had multiple I phones that started failing to charge via the wired port.

terminhell,

All cables have issues. One thing I see often only with iPhone cables are they’re always falling apart, especially the outer parts near the end.

Only time I go back is when I’m searching for something and cannot find what I’m looking for elsewhere. Despite leaving and deleting my account, I still find myself having to go back due to the inferiority of other resources and it sucks.

Thankfully I have never had to go to their actual website or the old(dot)reddit website either because I can still get access through northboots’ libreddit instance.

Yes, Lightning was better than MicroUSB but by now I hope we can all agree, that it has overstayed its welcome

kernelle,

When apple changed to lightning it was in the middle of the accessory hype where there were loads of accessories using the 30-pin. People where outraged because they could no longer use any of their accessories. Apple then commited to lightning for 10 years in order to sooth the public image. This was 11 years ago, and they didn’t switch last year to cut costs, but I’d argue it only overstayed it’s welcome for a year.

Lightning is/was actually pretty great. Also remember that it was introduced before USB-C even existed.

I’ve been using Linux for almost 20 years, and I can’t remember the last time I had to stress over drivers. Of course, I always check Linux compatibility when I buy hardware.

Marketsupreme,

I’m embarrassed to say I’m a SE and don’t know anything about Linux. What makes it worth using over windows?

rasensprenger,

Linux by itself is just a kernel, there’s a whole range of operating systems using it. Most of them have some commonalities, but there are also huge differences. Most of them can run directly from a USB stick (or in a VM obviously), so you can try some out.

Some things that basically all of them do very well, compared to windows:

  • mainly open source components (± some proprietary drivers and apps, if you want)
  • no ads in the OS
  • support for very old hardware, being (depending on actual OS more or less) light and resource efficient
  • very good package management
  • customizability

There are many things that are specific to some OSes. I switched from Windows 10 years ago, and I can’t see myself going back. Everytime I have to use it somewhere, I get annoyed quickly.

There are some drawbacks:

  • software has to be built against a specific kernel, and some proprietary software is not offered for linux. There are compatability layers for running windows software on linux without emulation, but they are mainly optimized for games (I’ve had windows-only games run faster on linux than on windows!).
  • some drivers are unavailable for linux, as the device manufacturers have to cooperate somewhat. However, almost everything will work.
  • some drivers are available, but require binary blobs distributed by the manufacturer. The proprierary NVidia drivers, for example, are faster than the open source reimplementation noveau, but they can cause problems with some software like sway. If you have an AMD gpu, their open source drivers are great, so no problems.

Roughly all the servers (including Microsofts own cloud), half the mobile systems, lots of the larger embedded stuff and some small percentage of deksktop systems are using Linux. Again, just try something (maybe Pop!_OS or Mint) and see if you like it.

uzay, to memes in unholy software..

I have had to spend so much more time thinking about drivers on Windows than on Linux it’s not even funny

Kecessa,

I don’t know how Linux users are using Windows but whenever I see comments like these I’m surprised they aren’t using OSX or a tablet instead of a computer by now because they clearly don’t know what they’re doing…
