On the other hand if most of your school’s money is in some investment firm, instead of invested in the wellbeing and learning of your employees and students. And you have a investor as the person with the highest salary.

Then your “school” is more of a financial institution than a school. And probably should be taxed as such.

Then they tell you the previous person was incompetent or something to try and make it seem like they were a bad employee, not that it’s a bad work environment.

“Oh? And who was in charge of their interview?” because unless they have a large hr department to handle hiring interviews, it was probably the person who hired you.

This is when you take notes in your notebook you should have brought with you.

I’ve noticed interviewers get visibly uncomfortable when I write in my notebook. It’s like they’re either trying to figure out if they just lied about something I will be able to reference later, or they just get that natural “someone is writing about me and I can’t read what it is” feeling, I assume the former.

Simon Pegg wasn’t lying in Hot Fuzz. The notebook is a powerful weapon if used right.

Bonehead, (edited )

I thought that once too and ignored my gut feeling. It was the most toxic work environment that I've ever experienced, and it essentially killed my software development career. I was eventually laid off and never recovered. I'm now a mail carrier.

the_post_of_tom_joad,

How’s the usps looking these days? You still got that asshole tearing the sorting machines down?

Bonehead,

I actually work for Canada Post. We've heard rumblings of the pre-sequenced mail coming our way, and some people have lost large chunks of money from it. Contract negotiations are coming up though, so we'll see how things go. Though it is nice having a union that is willing to fight the company for the workers...I've never had that before this job.

the_post_of_tom_joad,

Ah i did the thing, oops. Good luck on your negotiations :D

Nommer,

Had a similar experience. Toxic company that was awarded a contract hired in a bunch of people, gave us starting dates then a week before we were supposed to start they delayed our start data by 4 months. It only got worse and worse from there. I eventually quit when I was doing 4 other jobs, like with different pay scales and supervisors and everything, by myself. Killed any chances I had with IT since every other company around here doesn’t want to risk yet another burnout from that place. I had the same place interview me twice 6 months apart and both times as soon as they saw that company on my resume they frowned and kind of cut it short.

Transporter_Room_3,
@Transporter_Room_3@startrek.website avatar

Actually, I’ve had more than one interviewer comment on it saying it “shows (I’m) prepared” since many people don’t bring anything to write on and sometimes have to ask for a paper.

As for whether that could be a bonus in getting hired? Meh. 110% depends on the field.

If the question is “will asking unnecessary questions and writing down answers help get this job” then I’d ask if the interviewer isn’t prepared for a couple innocuous questions, then it shows a severe lack of preparedness on their part and I’d question whether I want to work for a place where someone gets shook by their underlings daring to question them.

I fully admit I am already biased against nearly any company that I would be interviewing at, so I’m already more willing to get confrontational in interviews if I feel I am not getting the respect I deserve (you know, the basic human decency of treating every random person you meet as an equal until they prove otherwise worthy), and drop them to keep looking than the average person. I’ll eat ramen and peanut butter sandwiches for a few more weeks if I need to. I’ve walked out of interviews before.

I’ve walked out after the opening “greeting”. “alright let’s make this quick, I’ve got a dozen other interviews today” okay well if that’s how you treat someone here for a simple interview I can’t imagine how you treat your employees on a bad day, get fucked. I literally said “excuse me? You don’t talk that way in a professional setting.” and left.

bane_killgrind,

When I go to client sites I carry around a pad, and I tell people that ask it’s just a prop to make it seem like I’m being thorough.

Really I have extremely good spatial recall and estimating retrofit jobs is a piece of cake in that respect.

The_Mike_Drop, (edited )

This is absolutely true. My former employer (a big box retail company) reduced my pay while I was on holiday. I had been there for years and accrued a bunch of pay rises - but the company got bought out and the new owners thought they could strip me of these because they felt they were temporary and non-contractual.

I got some legal advice that basically said they can’t do that sort of thing and had a meeting scheduled with HR. I went in with my notepad, I stayed calm - pleasent even - no angry shouting or slamming tables with fists, I just politely asked them questions and wrote down everything they said, then read their answers back to them to confirm thats what they said. I had about 6 questions prepared and by the 4th they were visibly uncomfortable, it was an amazing feeling making them squirm like that. After I got done asking my questions, I dropped the legal advice I had been given on them and it was obvious the answers they gave supported my case very heavily. They panicked and reversed all there decesion plus I got back-pay.

But if the first thing I had done is charge in making accusations and quoting the law I know nothing constructive would have happened.

See the goal is to bury them in their own words.

Edit: predictably the company went bust the next year. So long Office Outlet!

Always get them to bury themselves before dropping your intentions.

My wife is currently dealing with her employer and their complete lack of handicap spots, despite over 200 regular car spaces scattered all around a warehouse lot. She doesn’t quite get how to “play the game” like this but she’s learning.

One party recording state so I’d like her to go in to talk about it while recording, but her anxiety is completely stonewalling her from bringing it up.

Hit record on the phone, slip it in a pocket that has good clearance for the whole conversation, and get them to say the things they’ve said when they think nobody else can hear them.

Apparently the front office woman screamed at her to move her car (she parked there because the offices are isolated from traffic and have access to her work area)and “it’s not our goddamn problem we don’t have handicap spots, it’s yours so deal with it”

I’m about to just skip around waiting for her to do things and file a complaint with the EEOC or at least the ADA government site complaint form. I’m sure that would take months, if not years before anything ever happened, but I can’t hold her hand and be there when she confronts the owners about their 6-8 missing handicap spots.

    Mamertine,

Not only that, they advertised recycling to push public opinion that it was okay to switch to plastic, because plastic is recyclable. But they didn’t tell us, it’s never going to be economicaly viable to recycle plastic toothpaste tubes.

    rigatti,
    @rigatti@lemmy.world avatar

It’s not economically viable and you can only make lesser quality plastic out of it.

    yacht_boy,

Yeah, but those metal tubes were awful. I have been brushing my teeth with Tom’s of Maine for decades, and I remember how much I hated those metal tubes. They always split open weeks before the tube was empty and then they’d leak and make a mess and I inevitably wasted a lot of product. When Tom finally sold to whatever corp and they switched over to the plastic tubes that don’t leak and let me use all the toothpaste I paid for, I danced a little jig.

    oatscoop, (edited )

Your comment made me have a flashback to my dad getting irritated at me for squeezing the middle of the toothpaste tube.

You’re only supposed to squeeze the far end of a metal tube – pushing product from the very end to the opening. Then as it gets empty you fold/roll up the flat bit at the end. You can even even buy “wringers” designed to assist with that.

    AA5B, (edited )

But it’s not that simple. Back then no one recycled the can and all too many wouldn’t now. The can itself was heavier and not as effective. Plastic truly is a wonder material for packaging / it does a better job of keeping things fresh, is more convenient, and saving that weight, saving the energy going into making a can, saving the weight for shipping, is all a benefit of a plastic. We don’t have anything that works nearly as well

We all need to face the idea that convenience items like pudding probably shouldn’t be sold at all, especially with how easy instant pudding is

    yacht_boy,

The group think around here is so crazy. Should we be using less single use plastic, especially the thin films? Absolutely. But the environmental impacts of mining all that metal and making all that glass to replace plastic with, plus the added energy for transporting the heavier packages and the cost of increased spoilage and product lost to dented cans and broken bottles, dwarfs the negative impact of the plastic replacements.

    AA5B, (edited )

Also, I haven’t seen enough research on where environmental plastic comes from. While they’re are some benefits to just using less plastics, less packaging where we can, it would be much better to focus on the larger sources

Realistically what I’ve seen for larger sources of microplastics is:

    • industrial waste
    • tire dust
    • clothing

I already have a lint trap on my washer outlet and see there are a few filters meant to trap much of the manmade fibers that come off in the wash, to dispose of in the trash rather than back into the environment with treated wastewater. I have no idea whether that would actually be helpful but the filters aren’t that expensive, and it’s one of the few options under my control.

Increased standards on industrial waste cleanup are always a good idea. However a lot of this may be in undeveloped countries

If laundry is a significant source of micro plastics in the environment, we need to figure that out and add filters or something

We really really need to figure out something with tire dust, since it will continue to get worse as more people can afford personal transportation. I did read one article about filtering runoff near roads making a big difference but it was light on details and I’ve only seen something like that once

    yacht_boy,

I actually work in the wastewater industry and from what I’m reading, a properly functioning sewage treatment plant already captures a very high proportion of microplastics. This widely cited study noted above 98% removal efficiency at one plant.

We’re already at approaching 2 log (99%) removal without actually trying to. It doesn’t seem improbable to me that with a few relatively modest tweaks to the system we could get 3 log removal (99.9%). Getting to 4 or 5 log removal is likely where things will get really expensive and challenging. But for now, a 2-3 log removal is probably good enough to focus on other sources like tire fragments/dust that typically pass directly to receiving waters with no treatment at all.

    AA5B,

Good to know, thanks. While I don’t know how my system does with this , the treatment facility is new-ish and was supposed to be state of the art.

But then we’re back to needing to know more about the sources of environmental microplastics, then figure out how to cut them

    bitwolf,

I wonder how well PLA would work for food storage. I learned it’s made with beets and can break down very quickly.

    mastefetri,

This is why we need a plastic tax. If it was even slightly more expensive to use plastic they would switch back to metal or glass in a heartbeat.

    corsicanguppy,

You mean plastic coated tin for the metal option.

It’s baby-food glass jars or plastic somewhere.

I’m an American who’s been lucky enough to travel to many other countries, and I’m currently living in the EU.

Blanket statements on praise-worthiness are stupid; one should only praise things, people, and nations when and where they deserve it. There’s a lot to admire and there’s a lot to be disgusted at when considering just about every country and government.

What I find in EU culture socially is that people are far more exclusionary, prone to isolationism, and prejudicial about my and my countrymen’s competence and intelligence than what I was told to expect. I expected some “haha, dumb American” memes, but I didn’t expect people here to honestly believe everyone thinks and acts like our worst people back in the US. It was very eye-opening in a negative way.

EU citizens need to stop treating outsiders as 1-dimensional caricatures, but regrettably, that’s been one of humanity’s greatest faults, and I doubt it will be rectified anytime soon. I try not to get too butt-hurt about it, as we say, but it is irksome after encountering that attitude in conversation after conversation.

Also : Direct democracy and no président.

    TheSanSabaSongbird,

Maybe not now, but that’s not the point. The point is that we’re all human beings and what history shows us again and again is that as a species we are capable of talking ourselves into group-level insanity.

There’s nothing about history that should lead anyone to imagine that the capacity for group-insanity is somehow unique to any so-called “race” or national identity.

If you really want to argue that Americans are somehow uniquely subject to such things, you then have to account for the fact that a plurality of Americans are directly descended from European ancestry which in turn means that any difference has to be cultural as opposed to some kind of genetic quality innate to Americans.

The upshot here is not that the US is somehow unique, but is rather that the US is precisely what happens when Europeans take over a brand new continent peopled by civilizations that lack the technology and microbiology to resist.

Again, this idea of yours, that Americans are somehow unique or special, is patently absurd given what we know of history.

    BingoBangoBongo,

You should probably be aware that the cheeto never won a majority vote in America. Our democratic system is broken to the core though, and there is basically no way to fix it which is why he still won.

Along with that a good chunk, possibly majority of Americans is already more decent than you because we don’t use dehumanizing insults like the R word.

Several states have even proposed banning him from the ballot for his coup attempt, including mine. Unfortunately they are being tossed out, probably by judges that he put in power.

I think you would be surprised at how little power Americans actually have to affect change in our government. Short of dragging our knuckles and starting some uprising like his goons did, change can’t happen, and I’m not one to resort to that. I’d sooner head to Canada or Mexico.

    VentraSqwal,

It’s hilarious for all the “democracy” the US loves to “export”, it actually has a pretty terrible democracy. Wildly popular policies have no way to make their way to the government unless a rich person or corporation also lobbies for it.

    rbesfe,

Change would happen if 74 million Americans would grow a second brain cell and stop voting republican. If democrats were the only party winning elections, people would be more willing to participate in primaries or vote for a third party

    Schadrach,

Our democratic system is broken to the core though, and there is basically no way to fix it which is why he still won.

The biggest fixable issue is the whole thing where all electoral votes in most states go to one candidate. That is a thing that is fixable. Because that is a matter of state law. The problem being of course that most states don’t want to change that, because for most states it would mean less attention from presidential candidates because they’d be playing less of a role in determining who wins (by being worth a smaller, harder to shift margin). Convince every state to switch to the way Maine and Nebraska hand out electoral votes (2 based on statewide popular vote, one for each house districts vote - states get one elector for each member of Congress this assigns electors based on who would vote for that member of Congress) and the problem is mostly fixed (everything except not being able to win the presidency by just winning California and New York by large enough margins and having an average showing elsewhere). Importantly, it’s fixed in a way you don’t have to get most of the states to agree with all at once to make happen.

Abolishing the electoral college outright would require a constitutional amendment and those are intentionally very hard to do. An interstate compact to functionally eliminate it by getting 270 electoral votes worth of states to agree to assign their electors based on the national popular vote rather than anything at the state level is somewhat more doable but will also be legally challenged under the doctrine that the federal government is supposed to approve any interstate compact.

Several states have even proposed banning him from the ballot for his coup attempt, including mine. Unfortunately they are being tossed out, probably by judges that he put in power.

Any judge that gives a fuck about the law and the Constitution is going to toss those out, as they are premature. He’s a fuckwit that’s awful in all kinds of ways, but he is still due due process. Arguing 14th Amendment Section 3 applies to Trump requires arguing he has engaged in insurrection or rebellion or given aid or comfort to an enemy. Which he probably did, but “probably” is not generally a standard we punish or restrict people over, nor do we do that without due process and the only process so far in this case is “has been investigated and formally accused”.

This is one of the reasons that the Trump legal teams first and highest goal is to delay. If they delay long enough they can argue that the courts are being used as a form of electoral interference and possibly give Trump an election boost, if they delay even longer and he wins they can argue executive immunity. Because that’s the path with the best odds for Trump - he’s much better at manipulating crowds than at lying to judges.

I see this take often and I see the same kinds of responses, but it’s really upsetting to see the main culprit is never mentioned.

Yes, some of us are just hateful, but most of the people voting for Trump are exposed to and consume wayyyyy too much propaganda.

Our media has failed us in sooooo many ways all to chase the Almighty Dollar™. We have literal entertainment networks masquerading as “News” because they’re allowed to act however they wish. We have actual “news” corporations acting like entertainment. We have Fox News and Newsmax straight up fabricating a reality for their consumers that is almost exactly the opposite of reality, and then we have CNN, MSNBC, etc, that would rather follow The Days Of Our Trumps T.V drama as opposed to actually doing hard news.

We have 1/3 of our population living in a fantasy reality, 1/3 being made to be enraged about an orange man’s dumb tweet instead of learning about potentially good candidates to vote for, and 1/3 that’s just apathetic to it all.

We have a gigantic media propaganda problem… We have no real press that the 1st amendment was made to protect, instead we have corporations that are taking advantage of those protections to do whatever they want to make the most money, to hell with what happens to the country…

Edit: all that to say, the people that we see as “OMG how could you possibly vote for him again, are you a monster?” Think “Trump was the best president ever, every news show or podcast or Facebook interaction I have had or watched says as much and proves it.”

Once again pointing out that Trump never won the popular vote. Yes, we need to abolish the Electoral College. It favors the right wing unjustly and undermines the will of the people when it does not align with the popular vote.

Lots of people voted for him, yes. I’ll make the argument that things will actually get better as the folks whose cognitive abilities are negatively impacted by a century of burning leaded gasoline start to die off. I believe it’s something like >95% of people born between 1945 and 1965 that have enough lead in their bodies to be cause for concern. Can’t remember exactly where I read this, but you can do your own Google-Fu.

Striking those last couple sentences and just outright saying that over 90% of the entire population born between 1956 and 1976 were exposed to enough lead to raise medical concern in early childhood, according to the table below.

I’m also back to throw in the table/material I’m referencing. If I’m going to make assertions, I should back them up.

    https://i.imgur.com/7V5Q0QE.png

And the source: Half of US population exposed to adverse lead levels in early childhood

If you want some idea of how little we cared about lead exposure, just look up the Tar Creek Superfund Site., which turned three nearby populated areas into ghost towns. It’s been reported that children would play on the enormous mounds around Picher, Oklahoma, and those things were covered in lead dust.

And try not to live downwind of small airports.

Luckily I’m insured. I’ve contacted my legal expenses insurance and they’re covering a lawyer for the case. I will seek advice and see how an expert assesses the situation and then proceed.

Tldr, They are going to fight this!

    Batbro,

What sort of insurance is that and do I need to get some?

    RegalPotoo,
    @RegalPotoo@lemmy.world avatar

It’s pretty common for freelance developers to have insurance like this - if I screw up and you get ransonwared, insurance pays for a lawyer to explain the contracts indemnity clause to you using small words

    NightAuthor,

But what if I saved money not talking to a lawyer and never had the client sign an indemnity?

    RegalPotoo,
    @RegalPotoo@lemmy.world avatar

    Then don’t screw up

If you have already screwed up, you now get to play The Game of Litigation, where their lawyers try to prove that you are liable for billions of dollars in damages, and your lawyer tries to prove that you aren’t. The way the game works is whoever spends the most on lawyers wins. You’ve got more cash to spend than your clients right?

    charles,

Most professions where action/inaction can result in damages will have similar insurance. Some insurance firms even specialize in coverage for professionals.

If your profession has an association or similar group, they should be able to help you find those firms if they exist.

    tdc,

Not sure if it’s really the freelance/professional thing others mentioned. Private legal expense insurance (Rechtsschutzversicherung) is fairly common in Germany, so might just be that.

    Dehydrated,

The developer is German, in Germany it’s pretty common to have a Rechtsschutzversicherung. You pay them monthly or yearly and in exchange you can request legal advice from one of their lawyers af any time. It’s pretty neat.

$200 once in your life vs 396 a year, is kinda a no brainer situation.

    Varcour,

You do realize a consultation is just the first step, right? If he wants to fight this he’ll need quite a bit more than 200

    Miaou,

Not getting the downvotes, a lot of those are quite stupid. The Rechtsschutz is basically required if you drive for example, only because of game theory, not because it actually brings anything

I actually do phage a upcoming minor legal need this year, and they couldn’t even tell me , using that as an example, what would the benefit cover?

    Dehydrated,

Yes, typically you get to talk to real lawyers. They may not be the best lawyers on the planet, but if you just need some advice, you should be perfectly fine.
