It seems like lots of big companies are going this way. Trying to hit short term profits through massive, risky changes in direction, stocking up on managers and officers while suddenly firing half your workforce, taking massive payouts and crippling long-term potential, trying to hire in new bodies to throw on the pile as cheaply as possible, idolizing idiots like Musk who go around unplugging servers…
The submarine company is also an example of this. Why listen to material scientists or engineers when you can cut corners to save a buck? Submarine experts told the CEO it was just a matter of time before the carbon fiber went pop, and that would be really bad for anyone inside at the time. But they saved so much money!
I had learned about this a week or so ago, and the concern about the ability was that since the title does appear in the URL as well, how would that affect potential falsification and abuse. Well, in seeing this post about it again, I thought I'd experiment. Assuming your original title just mentioned Lemmy I edited the URL, and lo and behold it goes to this same page. So then I thought, is that title part even important? I cut off the URL after the 114218 number. It still goes here. So I guess everything after the post number is ignored, which means there's no problem at all.
Yes, that’s pretty common. Reddit URLs contain post titles as well, but they can be deleted without breaking navigation. I expect they’re added just for the convenience of human readers.
Other than the harmful "prank" type thing where you start with one title, gather comments and then edit it to make those comments mean something completely different, there is still the problem of creating an external link, getting the post to the top of hot/active/whatever and editing the URL to point somewhere malicious.
The counterpoint which usually is "you can already do that with short url services", to which the answer is "That's why they were all banned on Reddit".
Especially as there is absolutely no indication on Kbin that the title has been edited anywhere, and on Lemmy it's only that tiny pencil next to the post age.
Both the Lemmy and kBin UI show the domain of the link in a post. I would assume if someone got a post to the top of hot/active/whatever and edited the URL, then the UI would be updated to show the new URL's domain.
“My number one concern right now as an advertiser would be that Reddit seems to be losing rapport with and control over their users. Reddit needs to talk to their community members now and work to regain their trust and support or risk losing brand advertisers long term.”
We’ll see. The article also notes that no company has pulled their ads from Reddit yet and even says that compared to some other sites, Reddit isn’t doing so bad (I’m assuming they’re implying Twitter’s refusal to remove hate speech).
I think it's funny that in response to this people are STILL insisting that it's easy to find new mods. TIHI, interestingasfuck, and shittylifeprotips have been closed for over a week because they have no mods. Before TIHI mods got banned, they offered multiple users complaining the option to take over moderating the sub and they said no.
How does any of this point to it being easy to replace mods? Delusional
You would think that Reddit would have put some new mods in there right away (even if those "new mods" were just socks being staffed by Reddit employees) to put pressure on other subreddits.
That's hard to do when you're not profitable lol and with reddit users/creators leaving en masse, I don't see reddit ever being profitable since those are the same people that made the site what it was, not reddit employees.
Oh well too bad, but the fediverse is interesting and it has potential to be better than reddit could ever dream of being, without a single monolith able to destroy it. Decentralization is the future of the internet.
It's real, and it has always been the case (at least since 2016). You could pay premium to customise the whole website' CSS to your liking. You can either use a pre-made style (there was a sub to share themes) or make your own.
Lol i’ve always used old.reddit and custom css trough RES. If i would have seen that i might have left even sooner. In many ways allowing custom styles IS an accessibility feature.
Reddit: You can't be private, people need to see the content, reopen or else!
TIHI: No.
Reddit: Fine, mods are gone and we've reopened the community. People who want to be mods speak up
Crickets: Cricket noises
Reddit: This sub is unmoderated, so it's now banned so nobody can see it
So... Reddit just reclosed the sub they said MUST be open.
Don't forget that the API won't provide access to any NSFW sub. (There's a lot of reasons a sub might have NSFW posts besides just pr0n.) So Reddit literally expects people to pay for less content. It's absolutely bananas...
Lol it's funny people keep bringing up the NSFW as if everyone is going to be outraged. I mean I don't care if people like to watch gangbangs or whatever but I have absolutely no interest in porn. I'd rather look at some cuddling, hand holding, tender smooches and romance. But I do not like having to turn off NSFW and miss out on all the non sexual NSFW content on here.
You're right the porn is the least of it, how many askreddit threads are nsfw and many many more subreddits that have nsfw language. It'll be a very hollow experience using reddit on a third party app after the 1st.
I read something that explained that banning NSFW from the API would make it more difficult for mod tools meant to identify situations where someone who posted a lot of hardcore porn tried to post in a sub aimed at young or vulnerable users (I think r/teenagers was the example given). So it isn’t just about being able to access porn, but also about being able to identify potential problem users for certain subs.
I’ve noticed the exact same thing. Every time I see a post referencing events from three years ago I automatically assume it’s a bot. I always thought the people who commented as if these events were still current were insane. I guess it would make sense that they’re bots too.
I got a science degree in the late 90’s. Back then my eco profs talked about a lot of worst case scenarios that might occur in 2050’s and beyond. Things like the break down of the mid-atlantic conveyor current, the collapse of the antarctic ice shelf, weakening of the air currents that feed the amazon with sand from the Sahara, and sudden drops of sea life populations (like crabs). Things that are all actively in progress now - 50 years ahead of those “worst case scenarios” of the 90s. Oops was a while back.
After I did my research on all the devs of the different Android and iOS apps...I discovered the app I had been using, BaconReader, was basically the only one backed by an Ad company (also somehow tied to Tmobile/Sprint). The rest of them are basically independent developers. So after learning that...not sorry to see it go. If there was some redemption arc by reddit I'd use another app. Good riddance.
Lack of a response to what was happening. I drew up this research in the middle of the protests...from them I saw nothing (expected something posted on their subreddit, I removed their app after finding nothing from them). It seemed like a lack of care. Because of that, this post by them seems disingenuous to me, it's in response to the adoring fans posting to their subreddit. How many of those people posting love in their subreddit know about who the owners of the app are. Put two and two together and you know this is who Spez was talking about when he said some were just not willing to talk. I asked the same question of everyone who was unwilling to talk....why. I found answers for some...some had their words misrepresented by Spez....some hadn't said anything that I found...such as BaconReader.
This kinda makes sense. When i first started using baconreader, i didn't see any adds. Then, after some update, ads started popping up, like alot of them...
This is correct. I'm also excitedly watching Sync for Lemmy as Lemmy and Kbin are pretty neat so far and will only get better. I have been finding myself using all of the above.
Although @ljdawson and I have been vicious blood rivals in the past in the Reddit third-party Android apps sphere, we've been interacting more lately and see eye-to-eye on a lot of things. Great person and great developer.
I swear I saw this exact post and all the same top comments like a year ago… Like the Nicki minaj cousins balls comment is so oddly Deja vu familiar, and who would even remember that shit at this point
