scrubbles, in do you guys shop on places like aliexpress/Temu and if you do what items have pleasantly surprised you?
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Temu is just driving the social media impulse “buy buy buy you need it buy it now!!” Culture when in reality their stuff is crap, and even for the cheap prices… You probably weren’t going to buy it anyway. They are really striving in being a shitty company that’s bad for us and the planet.

Good video here that explains more of how they’re just manipulating us to buy more: youtu.be/7hGD5Cz_now

JaxiiRuff,
@JaxiiRuff@pawb.social avatar

Their tagline “Shop like a billionaire” makes me sick. Fast fashion and stuff like Temu have become so predatory lately. Fuck FOMO tactics.

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

TikTok and them just fuel each other to create fake fomo and it’s so crappy. They target kids so hard and take advantage of them wanting to fit in, and get them to just spend money on crap they didn’t need to buy anyway. Not to mention they’ve pushed fashion cycles to be faster to make people think that top they bought 2 months ago is useless and should be thrown out.

fiat_lux,

The top from 2 months ago frequently does need to be thrown out, because it's so poorly made it lasts only a couple of washes. Even the waste-pickers in the Ghana landfills don't want it.

luthis,

ClimateTown really drove home how hilariously bad fashion is for basically everyone

yuunikki,

No offense but guilt tripping me doesn’t work. I spend my money on things i like, idc about their personal politics etc.

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Capitalism in a nutshell. “Yeah it kills the planet and harms others and there may be forced labor involved, but idc, that’s other people’s problems”.

Not guilt tripping btw, just stating facts. I don’t and won’t buy for them.

yuunikki,

That’s fine. You’re free not to.

pickle_party247,

Some things on Temu are complete trash but some are really good for the cash. They have a HUGE range of pin badges for less than a dollar, I’ve seen some of the more expensive ones ($2) sold for $10+ on other marketplaces like Amazon.

StoicLime, in Be honest, do you still use reddit?

I do. My usage has gone down in half, as blue I have Lemmy and the vibes here are nice and I like the concept but it still doesn’t come close to Reddit in terms of content and niche subreddits.

sanguinepar, in What movie did you rewatch most often?
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

Ghostbusters - have no idea how many times I’ve watched it, but it never disappoints.

ralino, in What movie did you rewatch most often?
@ralino@lemmy.world avatar

Lone Wolf McQuade. Taped it on VHS and watched it with my friends all the time 😂

carbotect, in How to make subscribed feed more diversed?

You could make seperate accounts for different topics. Like make one account for memes, one for technology, one for news/politics, one for educational purposes etc etc.

Pretty much every Lemmy app lets you login with multiple accounts at once. Wefwef does that too, if you prefer websites over native apps.

That makes seperating your feeds a more clean experience. That’s how I do it for Youtube example.

If I open Youtube, because I want to listen to music in the background, I don’t want to get distracted by memes, news, vlogs, gaming stuff etc. That’s why I log in with my Music account where I only subscribe to musicians. This gives me a clean feed and the algorithm works in my favor to keep me at the topic at hand.

zombie_kong, in How do you cheer yourself up after a rough day? Or a rough year?

I take stock.

What are my personal positive achievements?

Where am I right now, is it a good place?

It doesn’t have to be my final destination, but is it good?

If I strip away all the fringe and lingering bullshit, am I safe and happy in this specific point in time?

Like right now: I am on the couch drinking coffee on a Saturday morning. I have three dogs with me. I am safe and I am loved.

What happens tomorrow is future zombie_kong’s problem. Not todays.

Edit: you got this. It’s nothing. A mere blip in this adventure we call living.

gkd,
@gkd@lemmy.ml avatar

Another thing that I like is considering not what I can do to “change my life in a year” but “what can I do tomorrow to improve my life even a little bit right now?”

Instead of getting caught up on larger things that might take years to achieve, if I consider something I can change right now that will make tomorrow a better day, those changes will add up much more quickly and noticeably.

Even if I can’t think of something, that’s fine. I can accept that, and just move on to the next day. The important thing is to ask myself this every day, so that I can give myself the option of making that change and having that reflection.

zombie_kong,

I like that.

Life can be overwhelming. Small adjustments can go a long way.

John Carpenter’s The Thing Must’ve seen it a dosen times by now. Secondly I think I could watch no country for old men on repeat without being bored of it

Gefrierbox, in Those who tried Linux and went back to Windows, what caused you to go back to Windows?

It crashes at random times without any forewarning. One moment I’m browsing lemmy, the next moment I get a black screen and the computer starts to reboot. Also sometimes after waking up from hibernation, the computer freezes, not even switchting off/on caps lock works in those moments. It doesn’t matter which distribution I use, they all crash on me (tried Fedora, EndeavourOS, Debian). I guess Linux isn’t compatible with my hardware, but I don’t know how to fix it or where to start.

imekon, in Those who tried Linux and went back to Windows, what caused you to go back to Windows?
@imekon@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

My main system is Windows, I’m a Windows developer. My older machines are Linux - because Windows runs like a dog on them and no longer supports them.

Kevnyon, in What movie did you rewatch most often?
@Kevnyon@kbin.social avatar

In no particular order besides alphabetical (all movies rewatched over a dozen times):

  • Atomic Blonde
  • Bad Boys 1 and 2
  • Bourne Trilogy
  • Back To The Future trilogy
  • Deja Vu
  • Eraser
  • LOTR trilogy
  • Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of Black Pearl
  • Swat
  • Terminator trilogy
  • True Lies
  • Transformers (the original ones with Shia LaBeouf)

There are many more, but I'm not gonna sit here and try to remember them all.

ji88aja88a, in In which game did you spend the most hours?
@ji88aja88a@lemmy.world avatar

Rocket league… 4500 hours… only a diamond 2

Gerryflap,
@Gerryflap@lemmy.world avatar

Also Rocket League. I’ve got like 2K hours and managed to get to Grand Champion (1) once, but usually hang around in Champ 2 or 3. In a way I just play like a very consistent Diamond player though. I can semi-reliably wavedash, sometimes manage to hit a half flip, and can’t do any flip resets, musty flicks, etc. I solely rely on positioning, shooting at the right time, fast aerials, bumping, and boost stealing.

kat_angstrom,

Nice! I’m at 1400hrs and can proudly say I’m Champ 2 (in Rumble)!

SpezHater69,

Wow really? Maybe you dont play ranked much? I have 850 hours and am champ 2 / 3 by solo 2v2ing

ji88aja88a,
@ji88aja88a@lemmy.world avatar

Embarrassingly, I typically only.pkay ranked and am D2 in both 2v and 3v … but, I haven’t played in 2 or 3 months now and I understand they’ve changed the MMR or how players are ranked. Btw, I’m old

SpezHater69,

Fair enough, as long as you enjoy playing the game thats all that matters

StinkyRedMan,

10k+ hours here, been playing since 2016. Got bored of ranked and the way people play in there at least 3 years ago.

mister_monster, in Do you want Lemmy to become mainstream?

The great thing about Lemmy is that there’s no admin, no one site, no single set of rules everyone has to obey. So Lemmy becoming mainstream doesnt necessarily mean everyone tolerating a new culture. Niche communities can continue to exist, instances can isolate themselves if they want and turn off registrations, “eternal September” isn’t really possible on a network like this.
