You’re assuming that the point of the American justice system IS to refrain and rehabilitate. It’s not.
A for-profit prison system seriously is low-key the most fucked up thing in a country full of fucked up things.
American prisons exist to make a profit for their investors. They do this by both government subsidies (which are calculated per inmate) and using the prisoners as cheap labor that they legally only have to pay pennies.
The system NEEDS a continuous influx of prisoners (slaves) to remain profitable. Rehabilitation is anathema to that.
@jaykay@kamasupra sorta… like I’m replying via my Mastodon account. Currently there isn’t post creation, though some googling has shown that it’s something they’re working towards.
But you basically copy the Fediverse Logo Link of a post and paste it on search in your mastodon client. It appears as a toot and you can comment; Lemmy will display it natively like this comment.
Favoriting the post on Mastodon counts as an upvote.
watch them die inside as nothing works, not even a restart.
Optional step:
put your wireless mouse receiver in their computer and subtly click occasionally, or move when they move. Has to be subtle enough for them to question their sanity for a few hours.
That’s a great addition. We used to screenshot it with an application open so they would keep trying to close the application. I had a coworker restart their computer several times before he realized what was going on.
I don’t know what you are talking about. I am assuming you are talking about the USA.
Why would both be considered bad, but one least bad than the other? Having only two major parties makes for little choices, but why you think its never a good choice?
From what I can grasp from here in Europe, the current president Biden is not bad at all.
I live in Europe, even with more parties it’s still a matter of “least bad” usually - like here in Sweden I find it really hard to find a party that is anti-religion, anti-monarchy and pro-science and education but also not lenient on violent gang crime and open borders. I also disagree greatly with the current unfair rent control system and the high income taxes (with no property, land or inheritance taxes), but there is literally no party that covers even just those 3-4 issues in the same way (and there are like 5 or 6 viable parties!).
I think the bigger issue with Biden is that there’s just no change at all - no attempt to solve the biggest day-to-day issues of heatlhcare, housing and education. And from the point of view of Europe, Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act has been terrible, directly subsidising industry to move to the US, right when Europe is struggling with the Russian gas crisis and the pipelines were bombed, etc.
I hate it when people say that I’m “throwing my vote away by voting for a 3rd party”. If everyone voted for the person they actually liked, rather than the person who’s likely to beat the other large party, maybe we’d see some better choices.
It’s owned by Facebook and isn’t open source. There’s no verifiable way to say for sure that Facebook doesn’t have a master key to read everything you send on it. Compare to say, Signal, which is open source and can be verified to be secure.
None of the messaging metadata is encrypted. They use that metadata to build profiles of people who aren’t Facebook or Instagram users that interact with Facebook and Instagram users. If you care about profiling for the sake of avoiding social engineering attacks, it’s one of your worst choices. If all you care about is protecting the contents of your messages, yeah, it’s pretty okay
No disagreement there. I could have clarified, my comment was in regard to message content only. I didn’t realize that about metadata and certainly am not defending Meta. I’d prefer Signal over anything else but as others have mentioned, getting friends and family to adopt is painful.
Lol no it’s not. Meta can and WILL decrypt it. They have decrypted messages for police requests numerous times, and not necessarily under court order, just police asking. I support decryption under court order, but these weren’t court ordered. Thinking anything owned by Meta is secure is ridiculous.
Then this is false advertising and a class-action lawsuit that should have already happened.
This Arstechnica article seems to confirm that they can’t decrypt without user intervention and that they have only ever supplied metadata to law enforcement. I’m no fan of Meta but do you have sources that they have in fact decrypted actual message content at the request of law enforcement?
the only thjng good is the messages and calls are alledgely encrypted, literally every other detail they know. live location? entire contact list? how frequently you text someone? etc etc
It's still part of the Meta platform so not completely independent.
What information does WhatsApp share with the Meta Companies?
WhatsApp currently shares certain categories of information with Meta Companies. The information we share with the other Meta Companies includes your account registration information (such as your phone number), transaction data (for example, if you use Facebook Pay or Shops in WhatsApp), service-related information, information on how you interact with businesses when using our Services, mobile device information, your IP address, and may include other information identified in the Privacy Policy section entitled ‘Information We Collect’ or obtained upon notice to you or based on your consent.
That title needs a lot of editing. It does end in a question mark, but it’s structured like a statement. Even if it is a question, it appears that your asking if it seems that way way to you. How is anyone else supposed to know how it seems to you?
Yes and no. My daily scrolling habit has been moved to lemmy and I haven’t really felt any loss.
However, and this is a big caveat: Reddit remains a huge source of institutional knowledge. Half a dozen times weekly I’ll look something up and the most relevant answer/discussion will be from Reddit. As I understand it, lemmy will never fulfill this need, because it’s not scraped the same way Reddit is? Or perhaps I’ve misunderstood something about the way federation works. If that’s true, it’s a huge blow to the long-term use of lemmy v. Reddit.
Right, I may be totally misunderstanding the problem.
If it’s just that lemmy needs time and interaction from the community to build that knowledge, then great! No problem. But what I understood was that lemmy’s communities and conversations simply aren’t made accessible to wide-searching like that.
Thanks for this! I have been using iCloud Keychain for a while and was generally satisfied. However, it wasn’t until I recently switched from desktop Safari to Arc that I considered a third party password manager, but was stuck in decision paralysis.
Given the overwhelming responses in this post, BitWarden it is!
Not to be that guy, but you can say “don’t recommend this channel again” to YouTube. I haven’t seen Quartering, Asmogold, etc for years now. Unless you search for them.
I had the issue that I got Andrew Tate shit recommended. I said don’t recommend that, and block the uploader. Youtube still suggested me that video. Exactly that video.
