Sentau, in Are you replacing Reddit with Lenny?

Both yes and no. Yes the time I used to spend browsing reddit is now spent using lemmy. But the experience is totally different in lemmy. I am a much more active part of the community here whereas I was a lurker at reddit

ezmack, in Where do you go on Lemmy for reliable news and politics?

Probably not what you want to hear but I’ve been absolutely bombarded with the right wing perspective my entire life and I’m pretty glad to have a place that doesn’t try to both sides everything. Where do I get my news? Twitter mostly I come here if I want to see something discussed further

lemonuri, in Breakfast suggestions?

You could try different brands of oatmilk. It might need some getting used to, but some brands actually taste pretty close to cowmilk. I favor a brand called no milk (available at lidl at least in Germany), which has some sort of fat added I think (it`s got 3.5 percent fat like milk). You might be able to find an equivalent over in the States.

original_reader, in How do I delete my Reddit account?

To answer your question.

Send Reddit this:

Sample Data Erasure Request (GDPR)

Here is the actual website of the European Union (GDPR) explaining this.

If you end up sueing them, please update us.

Sarin,

Thank you. I’m sorry for my late response. I will write the email today and keep you updated here on how they respond.

Sadly, I won’t be able to sue them because I just don’t have the time and money for that. But I would definitely report them to the data protection authorities.

original_reader,

That was more an exaggerated statement from me. I wouldn’t be surprised if at one point someone will do that.

Then again, Reddit might comply with your request.

SexualPolytope, in Liftoff. Lemmy app. Do you like the way it works now?
@SexualPolytope@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

LIftoff is fine, but I like Thunder better.

YourFavouriteNPC,

Thunder is what I’m using right now, too. It’s the most “clean” looking dedicated Lemmy app I’ve seen so far. Though I’m most likely going to switch to Boost for Lemmy once it’s available. I’m really looking forward to launching the rocket again :D

Joe_0237, in Are you replacing Reddit with Lenny?

I think you meant to post on asklenny xD

pH3ra, in Liftoff. Lemmy app. Do you like the way it works now?
@pH3ra@lemmy.ml avatar

The main issue I’m having with liftoff is that I cannot upvote or comment posts from other instances with my lemmy.ml account, so I’m still using jerboa

sloonark,

This should not be a problem with LiftOff. I can upvote and comment on posts from any instance. Have you tried the most recent update?

pH3ra,
@pH3ra@lemmy.ml avatar

I can upvote and comment on posts from any instance.

I mean you can if you have multiple subscription or if you do it through your main instance, but that’s a feature all clients have and I think they do it in a more intuitive way, conpared to LiftOff

Have you tried the most recent update?

Yes, I’m on v0.10.7

sloonark,

In that case, I don’t know what you mean. I only have one account on one instance and I can seamlessly interact with posts from other instances.

emptyother, in What are some interesting accounts to follow on Mastodon?
@emptyother@lemmy.world avatar

If you’re a Star Trek fan, @JeriLRyan and @georgetakei is there.

If you’re a dev, maybe @JenMsft or @codinghorror or @SwiftOnSecurity or @shanselman ? @jonskeet is also there but not very active.

If you’re a retro gamer, @grumpygamer is pretty active.

Literature fan? Im a fan of @MicroSFF . And @neilhimself do sometimes reply there.

BurnedDonutHole,

Thank you.

original_reader, in How do I delete my Reddit account?

Better to overwrite it with a different message. Twice. That makes restoration more difficult.

keider, in Where do you go on Lemmy for reliable news and politics?

Lemmy and Reddit in general haven’t been good for reliable news for me. I’ve been using Artifact for the past few months to have a more personalized feed, but I much prefer picking my own RSS feeds.

The only thing that is lacking for me about RSS feeds is the ability to discuss content. If Lemmy can fill that void, I’ll gladly switch over.

Ecology8622, in How do I delete my Reddit account?

IMO, don’t delete your account. I used to regularly run shreddit to “delete” my history. Same with Twitter and Facebook - I keep my accounts there to prevent hijacking.

Wahyu915, in Are you replacing Reddit with Lenny?

Still in its infancy, most of the posts/information i want to search still come from reddit. But the content I’m seeing here so far has been good.

Lorela, in What's your favorite rabbit hole to go down?

Absurdly long video essays on video game lore.

Do I want to watch a 90min movie? God no, that’s literal torture.

Do I want to watch a 3.5hr video essay evaluating the story of every mainline Pokémon game? Yes please.

brewdtype, in Are you replacing Reddit with Lenny?

Yes and no. My daily scrolling habit has been moved to lemmy and I haven’t really felt any loss.

However, and this is a big caveat: Reddit remains a huge source of institutional knowledge. Half a dozen times weekly I’ll look something up and the most relevant answer/discussion will be from Reddit. As I understand it, lemmy will never fulfill this need, because it’s not scraped the same way Reddit is? Or perhaps I’ve misunderstood something about the way federation works. If that’s true, it’s a huge blow to the long-term use of lemmy v. Reddit.

cantstopthesignal,

I wonder if that could be built into it. Reddit was not a very useful place for information in 2011. Then the communities came.

brewdtype,

Right, I may be totally misunderstanding the problem.

If it’s just that lemmy needs time and interaction from the community to build that knowledge, then great! No problem. But what I understood was that lemmy’s communities and conversations simply aren’t made accessible to wide-searching like that.

lynny, in Where do you go on Lemmy for reliable news and politics?
@lynny@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t. Lemmy seems to have the same issue as Reddit where people are towards the extremes with the only moderate people being those who don’t want to talk about politics in the first place.

I like to listen to CSPAN while at work, especially their morning show “The Washington Journal” where most of the content are regular Americans calling in to talk directly to guests or about issues they feel are important.
