DeltaTangoLima, in Whaf do you think of hosting an AMA with John Oliver to make Lemmy/kbin officially a viable Reddit replacement?
@DeltaTangoLima@reddrefuge.com avatar

It's worth a shot. If they decide to do something with it, you can guarantee it'll be a fair, impartial, and brutal look at the facts. And that it'll be fucking entertaining!

MrComradeTaco, in I need to survive for 3 days without pooping, and eating as little as possible. I can pee, but not very often. It can't take up too much space. What food do I pack?

Yeah, but whose uncle hasn’t?

FrankTheHealer, (edited )

I dont think you can die from not pooping for 3 days. I go 3 days without pooping sometimes because my metabolism is slow as fuck.

A week or longer without pooping? Yeah might cause issues, but 3 days is fine

SubArcticTundra,
@SubArcticTundra@lemmy.ml avatar

Same here, did it when I was younger. Day 3 was rough but it was definitely doable.

Kleysley, in why do people make nonsense posts with the jerboa logo

RickRussell_CA, in I need to survive for 3 days without pooping, and eating as little as possible. I can pee, but not very often. It can't take up too much space. What food do I pack?
@RickRussell_CA@lemmy.world avatar

It's about preparation. Approximate gut motility for a healthy adult on a light diet is about 48-60 hours. So, stop eating 3 days before you leave, poop out all you possibly can before your 3 day period starts. Drink about 500ml water per day in the days leading up to the 3 day period. It wouldn't hurt to prep with a mild laxative to remove as much gut content as possible.

Once the timer starts, start eating small amounts only after the first day. For water, about 500ml per day. The good news is that what you pee out can't take much more space than the fresh water you drink.

This assumes you are relatively sedentary. If you perform manual labor during the 3 day period, you'll need to increase water intake, and possibly food intake, to avoid exhaustion.

mizu6079,
@mizu6079@lemmy.world avatar

Thanks! I have exactly 3 days left so I'll get started right now.

FlowVoid, in Deleted

It's much easier if you reframe the problem:

Someone says they've built a machine that can perfectly predict what you will do. Do you believe them?

If so, take one box.
If not, take both boxes.

CoderKat,
@CoderKat@kbin.social avatar

But even if you don't believe them, it's got a 50% chance on a coin toss.

FlowVoid,

Regardless of whether the machine is right, if you don't believe it can perfectly predict what you'll do then taking both boxes is always better than just one.

mr-strange,

Yeah, at least you'll have an extra box to keep your stuff in.

Ciari, in I need to survive for 3 days without pooping, and eating as little as possible. I can pee, but not very often. It can't take up too much space. What food do I pack?

MucherBucher,

Come on. The internet is kinda anonymous, you could tell us it's because it's your biggest kink and noone would bat an eye. If you don't tell in fear of IRL friends finding out... that's already gone anyways.

SubArcticTundra,
@SubArcticTundra@lemmy.ml avatar

Heyy is it a situation you’re in voluntarily, you’ve been forced into it, or ‘voluntarily’ bc getting out of it would be more painful?

mizu6079,
@mizu6079@lemmy.world avatar

I wasn't forced and only two people know I'm holding my poop in. But they don't know what extents I'm willing to go to in order to achieve this.

adj16,

🤣

CanadaPlus,

This is exactly the sort of thing I'm guessing. Or stowing away.

whileloop, in Whaf do you think of hosting an AMA with John Oliver to make Lemmy/kbin officially a viable Reddit replacement?
@whileloop@lemmy.world avatar

He absolutely would be a great pick. And I suspect he would be interested. What I wonder is: how much would it grow Lemmy and the Fediverse? Impossible to tell, but even if it's only a small gain, I think it would be worth trying.

nieceandtows,

I think it would be a definite boost to the fediverse, because a major talking point I see in reddit discussions is that there is no viable alternative to reddit, so people are going to stay no matter what. This event would put a big spotlight on lemmy, and if it goes well, will result in a lot of regular users from reddit.

whileloop,
@whileloop@lemmy.world avatar

Reddit has long been known for its userbase being capable of surprisingly big things. Getting John Oliver to AMA here might show that Lemmy is capable of the same thing.

CanadaPlus,

Maybe some time later in July when that surge has passed.

dom,

I dont know if I consider anal with 3 days worth of scat to be vanilla

ErraticDragon,
@ErraticDragon@kbin.social avatar

I assumed OP would be willing to say it it was "just" that. This being the Internet and all, people admit to way weirder stuff all the time.

When I was a Boy Scout, we often had kids who would refuse to go. It was a whole thing that we had to check on. (Along with asking everyone how yellow their pee was.)

I remember one guy was in tears on the hike out, and it turned out that he had faked out the scoutmaster by taking a walk with the TP and shovel, but not actually gone. Poor kid was barely able to walk, but kept insisting he couldn't void either.

I only learned later how serious it can get if prolonged.

buckykat, in Why does Lemmy feel so fresh compared to Reddit?

It's not run to maximize shareholder value

xtratrestrial,

That was my favorite part! Don't you just love being a tiny cog on the capitalist wheel of despair?

krackalot,

I just wish the orphan crushing machine wasn't so slow. JUST DO IT!!! Or preferably don't and stop sucking, but I know that won't happen.

Spacemanspliff,

Even if they were to come out fire spez and go say ‘our bad let’s stop and talk about this’ I’m still not going back.

buckykat,

On reddit I deliberately refrained from up/down voting because I hate feeding capitalist algorithms. I'm trying to unlearn that habit now.

RedCanasta,

At least here there is no algorithm I think?

buckykat,

Certainly there's some kind of algorithm behind sorting by Hot or Top Day or whatever, but it's not trying to sell me stuff or sell my preferences to anybody

Zetaphor,
@Zetaphor@zemmy.cc avatar

The only algorithms here are for sorting posts based on activity and recency, rather than trying to maximize engagement so you see more ads. Also it's all completely open source.

Badass_panda, in I need to survive for 3 days without pooping, and eating as little as possible. I can pee, but not very often. It can't take up too much space. What food do I pack?

Realistically, if you eat anything, you'll poop. Tail down your calorie intake to ~1000 calories at day -7, to -500 on days -6 and -5, then to 0 for days -4 through -1. Start eating again on day zero.

You won't have to poop during that time. Make sure to drink water, and i would add electrolytes to ensure you don't get any type of heart arrhythmia (unlikely on a fast this short, but intelligent anyway).

I don't know why you need to do this, but good luck. I've done week long fasts before and they're not too hard after the first couple of days. Ironically, eating well before the start makes it MUCH harder (you'd think it'd tide you over, but it just makes your body expect food) ... Hence, the tailing down over a couple days.

Boozilla, in I need to survive for 3 days without pooping, and eating as little as possible. I can pee, but not very often. It can't take up too much space. What food do I pack?

Hard boiled eggs. Astronauts love them because they are almost completely absorbed and pooping in space is a hassle.

@CoolBeance@lemmy.world avatar

Oh god. I never thought I would imagine a "floater" as anything more than poop in a pool

bitsplease, in Why does Lemmy feel so fresh compared to Reddit?

As much as I’d love to think otherwise, i think a significant amount of the good feeling and comradery that we’re seeing now is due to us being in a bit of a honeymoon phase. You saw the same thing on Mastadon after the Twitter migration, everyone was singing kumbaya and holding hands, but overtime it started to regress a bit (though not nearly as much) towards a more “twitter” feel.

I’m sure over time it’ll stop being quite so feel-good and happy, but the fact that it’s community run and less centralized will help a lot in the long run i think. A lot of the friction and tension on Reddit was due in one way or another to it’s centralization - if you had a popular subreddit that was run by shitty mods, there wasn’t much you could do about it. here, you can just create a new version of the same sub on a different instance, and it’s a lot easier for people to “move” over to the new one.

I think the lower population helps a lot as well, right now the majority of the people on Lemmy are good faith users who care about the platform and want it to succeed. When you have 100’s of millions of users like Reddit does, you’re going to get a lot more bad faith users and people who just want generic content to scroll on

hey i saw that you only have a few days, you should go ahead and reduce your food intake today

Sordid, (edited ) in Deleted
@Sordid@kbin.social avatar

Both! Critically, the contents of box B depend on the machine's prediction, not on whether it was correct or not (i.e. not on your subsequent choice). So it's effectively a 50/50 coin toss and irrelevant to the decision-making process. Let's break down the possibilities:

Machine predicts I take B only, box B contains $1B:

  • I take B only - I get $1B.
  • I take both - I get $1.001B

Machine predicts I take both, box B is empty:

  • I take B only - I get nothing.
  • I take both - I get $1M.

Regardless of what the machine predicts, taking both boxes produces a better result than taking only B. The question can be restated as "Do you take $1M plus a chance to win $1B or would you prefer $0 plus the same chance to win $1B?", in which case the answer becomes intuitively obvious.

FlowVoid,

But if it's true that the machine can perfectly predict what you will choose, then by definition your choice will be the same its prediction. In which case, you should choose one box.

annegreen,
@annegreen@sh.itjust.works avatar

Though OP never actually stated that the machine can perfectly predict the future. If that’s the case, then yes, you should just take box B. But we’re not given any information about how it makes its prediction. If @Sordid is correct in assuming it’s a 50-50, then their strategy of taking both is best. It really depends on how the machine makes its prediction.
