HexesofVexes, in Are you replacing Reddit with Lenny?

Yup, and not just because of Reddit’s CEO.

The culture here is better - people read and reply rather than just upvoting. It’s a good place to help folks out, and be helped out.

serpentofnumbers,

Speak for yourself! I’m just replying to random comments and upvoting whatever I want! I didn’t even read your comment!

HexesofVexes,

This is the kind of quality logical paradox I love!

yggdar, in Breakfast suggestions?

Welcome to the club of lactose intolerance! If, like me, you really like dairy, there is a very easy way to cheat the system… (Seriously, how would anyone survive without cheese?)

You can get lactase tablets. Those are little pills full of lactase, which is the protein that breaks down lactose into digestible simple sugars. All you have to do is take a lactase tablet when you eat anything with lactose, and you can continue to live your life like before.

Lactose intolerance is not black and white either. You may have some tolerance left, which may be enough to eat your cereal with milk, if that is the inly lactose you have during the day. Your tolerance can also fluctuate over time. For example, the first time I had an issue with lactose it only lasted a few weeks.

datendefekt,
@datendefekt@lemmy.ml avatar

I always have tablets with me! Every time I’m eating out and am not 100% sure that the food is vegan, I take a table just to be sure. I can imagine that cooks slip in butter or cream to improve the taste.

SexualPolytope,
@SexualPolytope@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I can have a bit of milk. But I have it with coffee, and any more than that gives me gas. I’ll talk to my doctor about lactase pills, thank you for letting me know.

yggdar,

My pleasure! And unless the rules are different where you live, you don’t need to see a doctor or get a prescription. Here (Belgium) you can easily get them from pharmacies or online.

SexualPolytope,
@SexualPolytope@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

It’s over the counter here, so I don’t NEED to see a doctor. But my doctor is a friend, so doesn’t hurt to consult for free.

Coreidan, in Are you replacing Reddit with Lenny?

Not really. I stopped using Reddit and even though I am using lemmy it so far hasn’t been a true replacement. Overall my engagement has gone down hill significantly. I might check lemmy once or twice a day. I used to be on Reddit all day. Ultimately this is better for me overall. Even if I wanted to there just isn’t enough content for lemmy to be a replacement for my Reddit usage.

ZuckerbergIsCancer, in I'm being harassed by mosquitoes, how do i kill them all?

I’ve started using citronella soap when I shower.

TechnoBabble,

I don’t think citronella actually does anything.

FilipR, in What is something you think leftists are not ready to hear but need to hear it?

The leftists have become a corpo/billionaires shills since occupy wall street happened.

Since 2012 the left ceased to exist in the mainstream. Class issues that the left raised before the takeover ware replaced by identity politics. Labels were introduced and Massed Formation Psychosis was initiated. All dissidents of even a slightly different opinion were attacked/cancelled en masse. Freedom of speech, religion, was now seen as archaic, nuclear families were seen as dangerous, racism and segregation were accepted ect.

Psychosis reached it’s peak in 2020 when people had more time to reflect on their views in their time of isolation from coronavirus and subsequently more and more people were coming to their senses.

The scales are starting to swing back but in my opinion due to the sheer momentum of people waking up this will have catastrophic consequences for the western civilization.

Currently still there are no sensible/uncompromised leftist movements left and the only alternatives are on the right. And, like I said above, this will have catastrophic consequences.

keenanpepper, in How often do you brush your teeth?

I have a pattern which really works for me where I wake up, brush my night guard and brush my teeth with no toothpaste and then eat breakfast. That way I don’t have the horrible mint toothpaste / orange juice clash I’m sure many of you are familiar with.

Then at night I floss and brush with toothpaste, and put in the night guard.

I used to make myself floss only every other day (like if I didn’t floss last night I MUST floss tonight), which I highly recommend rather than sporadic or no flossing. But I recently upped my game to “every night except special occasions”.

CmdrShepard,

But I recently upped my game to “every night except special occasions”.

I’d like to think you record these days in your calendar in advance as if they’re something to look forward to like birthdays or Christmas.

breadsmasher, in Is it a good idea to enable "show bot accounts" on lemmy?
@breadsmasher@lemmy.world avatar

Theres a setting to hide bot accounts?

I have been frustrated with how many repost bots are across various instances. And why theres so god damn many “sports-team-name_bots”

bluetoque,

Note that you can block specific accounts it you want. If you see an irritant you can block it.

Tigerfishy,

Yep, just found it the moment I realized it was a thing in this thread - go to your account settings and you’ll find an option to unselect bot accounts

I wish there was a way to just mark bot accounts…like finding out it’s a bot doing most the posting in TIL…wtf is that? If the community needs a bot to grow it, perhaps it’s not an important community on Lemmy at this time? Perhaps there’s another sub that’s going to grow more organically? In which we will infact learn something today?

Just want bot-less communities (other than fun/helpful ones that aren’t Grond) that aren’t headed by greed. Jfc.

/rant

floofloof,

The whole drive to recreate every single subreddit by any means necessary is misguided. Lemmy should be its own place, not a facsimile of Reddit.

lemminer,

Exactly, people will always keep creating something. Just need an open ground to show it to others.

crashspeeder,

I don’t think it’s wrong to recreate a beloved community, and I think it makes sense to also populate it with content. I just think that posting a copy of Reddit is a problem, and automated posts too often are also not good. At that point you’re trying to force the community into existence rather than having it be organic. I think it’s okay to boost the community a bit, but not to try to make Lemmy the new Reddit.

I will say that Lemmy in general seems very Reddit-like, which is what causes people to try to make Lemmy the new Reddit, so I’m not surprised that people are just trying to migrate subreddits to communities here. I think Lemmy needs a bit more of an identity to avoid that.

breadsmasher,
@breadsmasher@lemmy.world avatar

Where abouts? The only option I see is “bot account” tick box which I have switched off (but still see bots). I thought that option was whether you are a bot account?

Tigerfishy,

It’s right under “bot account” on my screen…I’m on the desktop site though (thru my phone but still)

breadsmasher,
@breadsmasher@lemmy.world avatar

Thanks!!

colonial, in Where do you go on Lemmy for reliable news and politics?
@colonial@lemmy.world avatar

This is unhelpful, but… I just don’t look at the news. If something actually important happens, I’ll hear about it indirectly and go look it up if I care, but I’ve found that not being tapped into the news (and especially political news) all day every day does wonders for my mental health.

kenbw2,

Same

If you don’t read the news, you’re uninformed. If you read the news, you’re misinformed

Nemo, in Is it a good idea to enable "show bot accounts" on lemmy?

There are many helpful bots, like the one that corrects community links to be instance-neutral.

lemminer,

Question: Are those “bot accounts” flaired to identify them?

burgersc12,

I think any true “bot” would be flaired correctly. I blocked any bots I did not like, including @bot

chaorace,
@chaorace@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I think any true “bot” would be flaired correctly.

Just FYI: The bot checkbox an opt-in thing with no enforcement, so it’s basically guaranteed that some developer will eventually either forget to tick the box or deliberately choose not to. These are still early days for Lemmy, so who knows how the situation will eventually evolve… but for now it’s basically the wild west.

peter, in Is it a good idea to enable "show bot accounts" on lemmy?
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

Bad bots won’t mark themselves as bot accounts so it’s lore a case of if you want to see things like reminder bots etc

lemminer,

The reason why I made this post was my subscribed feed was being filled with lot of posts from lemmy.world/c/digitalart and lemmy.ml/c/memes, and I didn’t like the fact that these two prominently stayed on my feed. Unless post from other communities weren’t highly rated, they weren’t showing up, where I’m more interested in seeing new posts from niche communities.

I’m facing the same issue what I was facing with Reddit where important posts from smaller communities were getting skipped from my feed. Which I find very undesirable.

Althought I appreciate the memes and the artwork, I had to unsubscribe from them. Which is giving me better results.

StudioLE,

Disagree. If that were the case then the evil bit would be entirely redundant

kei, in Breakfast suggestions?

I’ve been enjoying overnight oats over the last few months. It’s super easy to make and you can meal prep it the night before.

I usually make it with oat milk, honey, and peanut butter topped with granola for some extra texture.

resurge,
@resurge@lemmy.ml avatar

I’ve been eating this as breakfast as well for probably over a year now. Can’t say that I’ve been enjoying them because the taste is pretty bland, but they sure are healthy and help a lot with digestion.

I make them super bland though, just rolled oats with double their weight in milk.
Before I added some maple syrup to give it some flavour, but then I tried to reduce calories in my meals and this kind of stuck.

kei,

I think the neat thing is that you can make it how you want. Fruits, honey, and other standard oatmeal toppings can make it quite enjoyable.

refurbishedrefurbisher, in How do I delete my Reddit account?

They don’t comply with GDPR. Not sure if it still works, but you can use PowerDeleteSuite to edit and then remove your comments. It’s a good idea to keep your account open for another week or so to make sure Reddit doesn’t restore deleted comments (they did for a few comments on my account), then delete the account in the preferences tab (I used old reddit to do so)

github.com/j0be/PowerDeleteSuite

To avoid rate limiting, there is a 5 second delay between editing and deleting each comment, so expect it to take a very long time.

joelthelion,
@joelthelion@lemmy.world avatar

They don’t comply with GDPR

What happens if you ask them to comply? Has anyone tried?

trachemys,

I hear some had success with it, but then Reddit got overwhelmed and stopped responding to it.

Lemmylefty,
@Lemmylefty@lemmy.world avatar

I have seen that part of that may be due to subreddits going from private to open, so you suddenly have comments again.

lynny, in Where do you go on Lemmy for reliable news and politics?
@lynny@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t. Lemmy seems to have the same issue as Reddit where people are towards the extremes with the only moderate people being those who don’t want to talk about politics in the first place.

I like to listen to CSPAN while at work, especially their morning show “The Washington Journal” where most of the content are regular Americans calling in to talk directly to guests or about issues they feel are important.

brewdtype, in Are you replacing Reddit with Lenny?

Yes and no. My daily scrolling habit has been moved to lemmy and I haven’t really felt any loss.

However, and this is a big caveat: Reddit remains a huge source of institutional knowledge. Half a dozen times weekly I’ll look something up and the most relevant answer/discussion will be from Reddit. As I understand it, lemmy will never fulfill this need, because it’s not scraped the same way Reddit is? Or perhaps I’ve misunderstood something about the way federation works. If that’s true, it’s a huge blow to the long-term use of lemmy v. Reddit.

cantstopthesignal,

I wonder if that could be built into it. Reddit was not a very useful place for information in 2011. Then the communities came.

brewdtype,

Right, I may be totally misunderstanding the problem.

If it’s just that lemmy needs time and interaction from the community to build that knowledge, then great! No problem. But what I understood was that lemmy’s communities and conversations simply aren’t made accessible to wide-searching like that.

Lorela, in What's your favorite rabbit hole to go down?

Absurdly long video essays on video game lore.

Do I want to watch a 90min movie? God no, that’s literal torture.

Do I want to watch a 3.5hr video essay evaluating the story of every mainline Pokémon game? Yes please.
