TORFdot0, in What's the point of buying new phones every years?

Performance gains for certain software or games. Especially if you are into emulation then the higher power of newer flagships or better cooling design, mean that you can run more recent games on your phone. Same thing goes with camera lenses, better camera means you can get better shots so if you are into photography it makes sense to upgrade.

Thrift wise, there is never really a reason to upgrade as long as it still texts and makes calls but the non-phone features are why you would upgrade early.

Dohnakun,

but the non-phone features are why you would upgrade early.

Or getting a non-phone for your usecase.

TORFdot0,

That’s always an option and often cheaper. But people would rather use the device they always carry on them rather than having to carry a laptop, emulation handheld, or DSLR camera with them all the time. People are willing to pay premium for the convenience.

DaBai, in Why do Gezendong-style-tankies support Putin and Xi-Xinpin so much ?

This is a ridiculously loaded question.

The use of the dollar as a big stick for military base expansion and funding of forever wars across the world is directly threatened by the creation of a multipolar world. While Russia has amble things that can be criticized for, there is critical support as the defeat of NATO forces combined with the expansion of BRICS and China’s BRI has created space for many countries in the world to cease their dependence on the united states while ending the funding of a military that authoritatively declared itself the world police.

Based on this data I would come to the conclusion that China is doing a good job, not to mention Covid-19 where majority of the western countries subjected large amounts of the population to a disease and continues to make allowances for anti-vaccine misinfo advocates.

Ziggurat,

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t say that US are great or whatever. I say that as a socialist, modern China is pretty far from the kind of society I would like to build, and just like I blame some comrade for falling in the social liberal trap, I blame others for falling in the anything against US is good trap

GladiusB, in Liftoff. Lemmy app. Do you like the way it works now?
@GladiusB@lemmy.world avatar

My only gripe is that there does not seem to be a “context” button as the website has when people reply to my comments. Other than that, seems pretty solid.

FarLine99,

If you click chain button near comment in Inbox section then on mid of the screen will be button show context 😉

GladiusB,
@GladiusB@lemmy.world avatar

Oh mb. I thought was the “link” button.

GladiusB,
@GladiusB@lemmy.world avatar

Mb. I thought that was the link button. Thank you stranger.

FarLine99,

yup. Kinda confusing icon. Need improvement. ❤️❤️❤️

Dohnakun, in Why is youtube recommending conservative "talking points" to me?

Just ignore the recommendations, it’s mostly bulkshit anyway.

omidmnz,

addons.mozilla.org/…/youtube-recommended-videos/Unhook "ignore"s them for me! It is available for other browsers too.

fische_stix, in What's the point of buying new phones every years?

I break them, then buy a new unlocked “last gen” phone cheap to replace it. I am usually one or two versions behind the “newest” phone, but I’m spending less than using carrier based device insurance. Phones have become like sunglasses to me. I don’t buy particularly nice ones because I just destroy them.

DeadGemini, in given how little one vote matter, it seems to me that stripping felons of their right to vote is both petty and counterproductive if the point was to reform them into civic minded individuals ?
@DeadGemini@waveform.social avatar

1 vote on its own doesn’t matter, however, the collective vote of undesirables in a country with the highest incarceration rate on earth could really fuck shit up for the elites who seek to control the population.

hoodlem, in Why do Gezendong-style-tankies support Putin and Xi-Xinpin so much ?

It’s bizarre. Both countries have moved away from communism. Russia is ruled by oligarchs. Xi-Jinping’s stated goals are to move China to a modern socialist nation while staying in keeping with China’s culture. His actions are the opposite—China has become more and more capitalist while maintaining authoritarian leadership.

Works

No_Money_Just_Change,

Hard to say without knowing the null hypothesis

richneptune, in What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?

It takes a woman nine months to make a baby, nine women cannot make a baby in a month.

Classic (and likely mangled by myself) computer science quote which I always enjoy encountering in the wild!

DevouredChaos,

Ive always heard that one from a Project Management perspective. Ive used it myself once or twice actually!

someguy3,

Classic project management quote.

deadbeef79000,

Nine women can average one baby per month, but only with an extra nine months of pre-planning.

AlexWIWA, in What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?

From the moment I understood the weakness of my flesh, it disgusted me

OtherPetard,

I craved the strength and certainty of steel. I aspired to the purity of the Blessed Machine.

AlexWIWA,

Your kind cling to your flesh as if it will not decay, and fail you. This crude biomass you call a temple, will wither, and you will beg my kind to save you.

atheos, in What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?
@atheos@lemmy.atheos.org avatar

“Friends and Family fuck you first”. Sounds like a pretty shitty quote, but it proves to be true as you get older.

Just_A_Human,

They get dibs, it’s only fair

palitu,

That is a really sad view on friends and family. I mean, depending on the size of the funking.

My family and friends have been minor funking.

You should choose different friends and make sure that you don’t pass that sentiment on to your kids.

atheos,
@atheos@lemmy.atheos.org avatar

It’s a sad reality for some, count your blessings.

palitu,

But the friends part. Family I get, but friends? Sad noises.

Today, in What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?

Two from my mom… 1 - I cut, you choose.

2 - If a boy will cheat with you, he will cheat on you.

HubertManne,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

we called it as kids. you split, I pick.

2d,
@2d@kbin.social avatar

What does "cheat with you" mean exactly?

bonn2,

It means if he is willing to cheat on someone to be with you.

Romkslrqusz,

Cheat on their partner with you as “the other person”

kava, in Why is youtube recommending conservative "talking points" to me?

I get right wing stuff only on YouTube shorts typically. And I think it’s because I’ll watch them. I find it interesting in a detached sense.

Good to know what you’re up against. Same reason I try and watch as many Trump speeches as I reasonably can.

Fester, in Is there a way to filter across communities in Lemmy using the search function?

Try lemmyverse.net/communities

It has the sort/filter options I think you’re looking for, and it doesn’t limit info to your instance’s perspective. (It always shows all instances, even if your home instance hasn’t made a connection to one yet, and it shows total subscribers across all instances.)

Click the !URL for an instance to copy it, then paste it in your home instance search bar to go there and subscribe.

Another useful resource is c/trendingcommunities@feddit.nl - not helpful for searching, but handy to check daily after you’ve built your subscriptions and want to see suggestions for growing communities.

Regular search features are lacking a bit due to the nature of federated servers. Hopefully these features will be added someday. Till then, dedicated sites like lemmyverse seem to be the best option.
