Anyone who isn't at least mildly interested that you know Morse code isn't someone you want to know :-)

Good filter technique.

snek_boi,

what if someone is mildly interested in why you use it as a filter technique? :P

state_electrician,

Also works the other way around, which is neat.

the_inebriati,

In that you know to avoid the weirdo in the corner wearing a “Ask me why I know morse code” t-shirt at the party?

state_electrician,

Correct.

vaseline, in What do you use Vaseline for?

Masturbate

hamsteronvase,

Try Astroglide

vanderbilt,

Does that not hurt? Vaseline seems like it would be way too gummy and thick?

TBH, it’s not that great for lips. Try Carmex.

Fondots,

Back in my marching band days, we swore by blistex DCT as our lip balm of choice.

Take it from the people who spend all summer out in the sun preparing to press pieces of metal up to our lips in sometimes freezing weather.

Belgdore,

Carmex burns like fire

EggsCurrently, in What is the most unhelpful advice you have received?

“Do something that you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.”

Bullshit. I worked in the video game industry in a field I’m very passionate about with great people who were all talented. But the industry burned me out and almost killed my passion for games as a hobby with the endless unpaid overtime, constant crunch and deadlines, fairly low wage and all that investment was rewarded by eventually being let go along with all the less senior staff because our studio was bought out and the parent company told to cut expenses.

Don’t work for the video game industry, people. Make indie games by all means. But stay clear of the big names.

Addfwyn,

I have always hated that advice. While exceptions exist, there is no faster way to burn yourself out on something you love than making a career out of it. I generally do like my work (IT) now, but a lot if that is because I actively try to not even look in the direction of a computer when I am not in the office. I probably consume less tech/IT industry news now than I did before I worked in the field.

Zarxrax, in What are some useful or just cool stuff to memorize?

Learn some alphabets of foreign languages. Russian is fun because some of the characters looks like English letters but have completely different sounds. Korean is also cool because it looks crazy complex but it’s actually extremely simple.

MammyWhammy,

I don’t know any Korean, but the Korean alphabet is by far the best writing system I’ve seen.

The characters make the shape your mouth makes while annunciating that letter. It’s ingenious.

Crankpork, in What do you use Vaseline for?

It’s good to put around your eyebrows when you’re tinting them, so you don’t stain the skin or any invisible hair.

Also good for putting on nail polish, for similar reasons.

Hhffggshn, in What is the most unhelpful advice you have received?

“The boy next door is punching your arm because he likes you.”

Thanks, mom… Taught me to confuse abuse with love.

Kayel,

Australia had to do a huge public health advertising run to shift attitudes on this.

Damaging advice

I use it to lubricate machine parts at times. Also good coating for rust protection like the sockets of outdoor bulbs or tools in storage. There’s better products for skin protection. Years ago it was commonly used for infant diaper rash, but again there’s better products for that now. I don’t think I’ve ever used it on my body, it’s made from petroleum so it’s really just highly refined axle grease.

rackmountrambo,

Yeah it's actually a decent dialectic grease.

Edit: In fact after a quick research, I can't really find the difference between a 14$ tiny tube of dialectic and a cheapo massive vat of Vaseline. Guess I should get some for the shop.

rm_dash_r_star,
@rm_dash_r_star@lemm.ee avatar

It works great for that. It’s also good in automotive for bulb sockets, I’ve used it for that as well. It’s amazing actually, slop some in a socket and next time you pull a bulb it will still look brand new, even if not well protected as the case with antique cars. You would think it might interfere with electrical contact an Vaseline is completely non-conductive, it doesn’t seem to at all. You can also use it on car battery terminals and it will completely stop any corrosion, however I actually use 90W gear oil on those since it attracts less dirt and works as well.

Eufalconimorph,

It’s dielectric (non-conductive) not dialectic (talking).

Just for fun -

Once a molicepan met a bittle lum Sitting on the sturbcone eating gubber rum Mmmm said the molicepan, simme gum Not on a sam dight said the bittle lum

Growing up in the 1930s, mom said the was the girls favorite pastime - swapping letters of different phrases.

I know you were looking for more serious things, but this was fun for me to memorize years ago and try to put into play with other phrases.

I play a lot of MMOs on my PC laptop, but other than those I mostly use my Switch.
