@rm_dash_r_star@lemm.ee avatar

I have this thing about astronomy. Kind of a perspective thing of our place in the cosmos. I try to remember all the distances of planets from the sun and distances of moons from their planets. Also the diameters of solar objects. There’s other factoids I try to remember about neighboring solar systems and galactic bodies. For example I remember the black hole at the center our galaxy is called Sagitarius A and its mass is 4M suns. The black hole at the center Andromeda our closest major galaxy at 2.5M light years is 25M suns. The black hole at the center M87, the closest active galaxy at 50M light years is 4B suns. I didn’t look that stuff up so tell me if I didn’t get it right.

Chrobin,

Correction: It’s Sagittarius A*

In the theater? Boogie Nights.

My friend and I didn’t know a goddamn thing about Paul Thomas Anderson when we went to the premiere. All we knew was that Heather Graham got naked in this movie about porn stars. We’d both had massive crushes on Heather ever since License to Drive… A crush which was only strengthened by her appearance in Swingers.

It turned out that the great nudity was only a bonus to what ended up being an amazing film with brilliant performances from everyone… INCLUDING Marky Mark. My friend and I ended up going to see Boogie Nights on the big screen close to 20 times. It helped that I had just gotten a job as an usher at a theater when the movie got it’s second run, so we could see it for free. It also became a point of local pride since PTA was North East Ohio television royalty, and my friend and I wanted to follow in his footsteps

ScrivenerX,

For me, it was, sadly, Final Fantasy Spirits Within.

I don’t like the movie, but when it was in theaters every one of my friends wanted to see it, and schedules didn’t line up. Buddy is in town for 3 days “hey let’s see a movie!” Every time it ended up being that damn movie.

I ended up seeing it in the theaters 10 times.

lingh0e,

That’s actually a great movie, and it’s probably one of my most watched DVDs.

It’s some of the best early mo-cap cgi in cinema history. Photorealistic without diving into the uncanny valley.

And storyline is very engaging. It hits poignant notes about pacifism, environmentalism and reincarnation without coming off as preachy or condescending.

diskmaster23,

The lady that was having sex with everyone at the party was the oddest thing. That was totally not a healthy relationship.

lingh0e,

That was the point.

Thurgo, in What do you use Vaseline for?

I use it after cleaning the impeller on my aquarium filters. They naturally collect goop around the magnet bit of the impeller which makes them quiet, but eventually there will be too much goop and they stop spinning or make a horrible racket. If you clean it off all the way it will buzz and rattle for a while. A big blob of vaseline will quiet it down until the goop builds back up.

phar,

Any chance the goop builds up faster because it is sticking to the Vaseline?

Thurgo,

I haven’t noticed that yet. A lot of the goop is from decayed duckweed and poo debris getting jammed near the impeller. Might take 3-6 months for the impeller to get stopped by the goop. Vaseline isn’t a very good long term lubricant for aquarium impellers because you’ll open it up a week or two after being applied and sometimes it will be gone (probably sucked out and globbed somewhere else inside the filter). Really good temporary solution though.

Authy is very concerning lately www.androidpolice.com/authy-hacked-what-to-know/

z2k_,
@z2k_@lemmy.nz avatar

the security team found out that only 93 Authy users out of 75 million were affected

Also this was a social engineering attack and if you’re syncing your 2fa seeds then you should be encrypting them with a secret. Cracking that should take years if not more.

Duamerthrax, in Downvotes = “I disagree” or “this is bad and you should feel bad”?

Downvote for bad technical advise, I think the person is a bad actor/bad faith argument, or if the person turns hostile to ad hominem attacks. I try not to downvote if I’m putting the effort into debating someone.

edit: for clarity

Arfman,

Yeah if someone say something I disagree with but isn’t factually wrong I’ll just leave it be.

GerryMandering,

I agree with this. If I’m scrolling through a Linux forum and someone is stating something demonstrably incorrect, I don’t want someone to stumble on the post and run into difficulties so I always downvote that particular post and upvote the posts with the right answer.

Now, if I disagree with someone that’s different.

Like if I’m in a thread about your favourite tv show, I don’t downvote someone I disagree with because it’s subjective. I might upvote the people I agree with, but it doesn’t seem fair to downvote someone’s opinion.

But some things are either right or wrong, and your example of bad technical advice is one such thing
