Moved from pc to laptop about a decade ago and I don’t think I could ever go back. It seemed so normal back then to spend all my time in one room at my desk.
But now, yeah I can spend time at the desk and I can even plug the laptop in to external everything and it’s just like having a pc. But ALSO I can laze around on the couch watching TV with my other half while I play Deep Rock Galactic, or I can lounge in the sun in the conservatory and still edit video, or I can pick up and take it on a trip somewhere and still have access to everything I need without having to fiddle with a phone.
The only downside of a laptop is the cost compared to a similar spec pc. But when I think of going back I think of being chained to a desk in that one room and just…nah.
Apparently the “older” ones like T480 had crappy screens and it changed with, tada! , the T490 generation q. I’m quite happy with mine to be honest. I got a french keyboard, thinking about getting the US one with that Big return key :-D but I’m curious about what your “retrofitted classic keyboard” is (it appears it is quite simple to change the keyboard on ThinkPad)?
Laptop by far, it’s not even close. There’s practically no advantage to a PC I’d be missing at all. I can quickly grab it and bring what I’m meddling with anywhere I go quickly, and the battery makes it so I can jump between my desk, couch, or down the street. If I need to run an external peripheral for some strange port, I have a Thunderbolt external PCIe enclosure at my desk.
That said, I wouldn’t consider a Chromebook a practical replacement. Not because it’s a laptop, but because a lot of what I fiddle with is just easier on a normal OS.
From what I’ve seen it’s a bell curve most of the time. People grow up and stop being little twats and eventually get to the point where they start to become big twats.
I don’t think iw oild be unreasonable for someone to make a search engine that is specifically for indexing lemmy posts. Seems like it would be a good addition to the lemmyverse site
But you have to choose the instance you’re searching, that’s the opposite of what I want, I want to search all instances, or at least the top 100 or something, all at once
Houses are built differently in hot areas. Very few windows facing south. Shutters on all windows. All windows deeply recessed. Channel the wind, ie have a deep through channel that spans across the house so any pressure differential causes air to exchange. Tiled floors. No/low insulation.
In Northern Europe, we live in sweat boxes designed for letting in maximum light and keeping beat inside the house.
I don’t dream much but I would like to live in a world where all the information published is free to modify and share (i.e. all the research data, hardware assembly instructions, firmware, microcode, software, books is copyleft). Intellectual property exists only as share-alike materials, you must publish the internals alongside with the end-user product (e.g. you can buy a CD, or download a content online). All the software is open-source, copyleft. Paywalls can only exist to cover infrastructure costs, you can still copy the content that is behind the paywall as long as you include the original author. This would break all the walled gardens of information.
Never missed a flight, but my luggage once went to Manchester and I went to London. We were both supposed to go to London. I had just left my finacee in the US (we’re married now), I was jet-lagged, and just wanted to go home and be heartbroken, and Monarch Airlines sucked anyway. Either way, I think me blowing my stack at the baggage rep. was not one of my finer moments.
Got my luggage back a week later with a $25 check to apologize. Hmmph.
I have a laptop for work, it’s useful for that purpose because it’s portable. I’ve owned several personal laptops over the years and rarely used them because I just don’t need one. If I traveled more I’d consider buying one.
I like my thinkpad. the keyboard is okay. i don’t use the touchpad. i can carry it everywhere, take it to the livingroom or kitchen or watch a movie in bed. Downside is: i’d like to have more storage and RAM.
A couple of years ago, I was a Canadian travelling in Silicon Valley. I hadn’t yet acquired any USD but was hungry and went to a mall food court. I was surprised when they wouldn’t accept Apple Pay. This place was not far from Cupertino (Apple headquarters). They didn’t even use chip-and-pin, which is ubiquitous in Canada and even everywhere I’ve been in Mexico. Instead, they swiped the magnetic strip and made my sign a screen with a stylus.
Well, next thing you know, I’m getting fraudulent charges on my card from Las Vegas. I immediately called the bank and they locked it down. Fortunately, I had another card on me but was super paranoid to use it after that.
PC for most of my work, laptop for when I just need to access things from elsewhere. Although, I would never touch a Chromebook. Tried it, was very underwhelmed. IMO chromebooks defeat the purpose of a laptop. What’s the point of portability if you need wifi to use it?
