winterayars, in given how little one vote matter, it seems to me that stripping felons of their right to vote is both petty and counterproductive if the point was to reform them into civic minded individuals ?

The united states already imprisons , and unevenly at that.

coffeebiscuit, in given how little one vote matter, it seems to me that stripping felons of their right to vote is both petty and counterproductive if the point was to reform them into civic minded individuals ?

Giving hoe little one vote matters…

Stop using this dumb mindset. Also there is more than 1 felon.

SSUPII,

“one vote matters little” makes my blood boil, and I hope for it to never change as I get older.

nivenkos,

It doesn’t matter though. We vote for the least bad option every 4-5 years and call that “democracy”.

SSUPII,

I don’t know what you are talking about. I am assuming you are talking about the USA.

Why would both be considered bad, but one least bad than the other? Having only two major parties makes for little choices, but why you think its never a good choice?

From what I can grasp from here in Europe, the current president Biden is not bad at all.

nivenkos,

I live in Europe, even with more parties it’s still a matter of “least bad” usually - like here in Sweden I find it really hard to find a party that is anti-religion, anti-monarchy and pro-science and education but also not lenient on violent gang crime and open borders. I also disagree greatly with the current unfair rent control system and the high income taxes (with no property, land or inheritance taxes), but there is literally no party that covers even just those 3-4 issues in the same way (and there are like 5 or 6 viable parties!).

I think the bigger issue with Biden is that there’s just no change at all - no attempt to solve the biggest day-to-day issues of heatlhcare, housing and education. And from the point of view of Europe, Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act has been terrible, directly subsidising industry to move to the US, right when Europe is struggling with the Russian gas crisis and the pipelines were bombed, etc.

but, isn't that good for Americans? And isn't Biden the President of America?

I hate it when people say that I’m “throwing my vote away by voting for a 3rd party”. If everyone voted for the person they actually liked, rather than the person who’s likely to beat the other large party, maybe we’d see some better choices.

eddietrax, in Does anyone actually enjoy working out?
@eddietrax@dmv.social avatar

I don’t enjoy motivating myself to go workout. Everything up until the point of the actual workout isn’t enjoyable. But the workout and post-workout I do enjoy. There is a high associated with it. And that feeling of accomplishment, and visible progress is extremely enjoyable.

The only advice I can give is to give it adequate time. It’s easy to get discouraged. Just keep this in mind: You spent a lot of time doing damage to your body, you’re going to need to put in some effort to reverse that damage. Give it some time before getting discouraged.

erusuoyera, in Hey Lemmy, what are your favorite ear worms?

The Cranberries - Zombie really gets stuck in your head. In your hea-ed, in your hea-e-a-ed, zombie, zombie, zombie-eh-eh.

pixelfed.org

frizzle,

I like that it is federated, but I wish I didn’t have to make an account. This might be the best option though.

tourist,
@tourist@community.destinovate.com avatar

From someone who has tried pixelfed, it is basically a photo post filter for mastodon. You can see photo posts people make on mastodon from pixelfed and you can see pixelfed posts from Mastodon. So as mastodon apps improve and you can filter posts by content type (maybe you already can?) than pixelfed is basically irrelevant and/or equivalent to a photography focused mastodon instance.

Bishma, in What genres of music do Lemmites enjoy?
@Bishma@social.fossware.space avatar

I still most often listen to Grunge and 90 Hard and Alt rock. According to tidal Pearl Jam is a little more than half of all my song listens every month.

Side note, I think the collective noun for Lemmy users in any music thread should be Motorheads.

0ops,

I used to hate grunge and especially Pearl Jam as a kid, but the genre’s grown on me a lot the last couple years

ophelia, in What butterfly effect have you personally witnessed?
@ophelia@lemmy.ca avatar

Was a college dropout, working at a factory. A really grimey sweat-shop type place. I had just come to accept that this was my life. Then they needed an IT person for the afternoon shift. Someone told HR that I “knew computers”. I almost didn’t apply, but the HR manager approached me and asked me to. That was about… almost 20 years ago.

5 jobs later and I’m now a professor and finishing up my MSc. Computer Science. That one person who said I knew computers changed my whole life. I’m still not even completely sure who it was.

hootener, in What are your favorite leftist podcasts?
@hootener@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I think Cool People who did Cool Stuff is pretty leftist/anarchist.

Moonguide, in Does anyone actually enjoy working out?

I enjoy the simplicity of weightlifting. Make sure your form is good, count reps, count sets, take note of the weight lifted. All of that keeps my mind occupied for 2h, no room for it to wander into topics I’d rather not think about atm.

I also find some measure of joy out of knowing I’m lifting more today than I was last week, it’s simple and measurable progress. No room for subjective bias, unlike other things I’m trying to improve upon.

It also has the added benefit of tiring me out. GAD and ADHD make for horrible bedfellows, they’ve made nights sleepless for me more often than not, so I’ll take any help I can get.

Edit: otoh, I hate cardio with a passion. Its boring and does nothing but make me sweat and lets my mind wander. I’ve tried everything, from music, to audiobooks, to podcasts. Plus, I feel like I run loudly, like my feet are made of lead, and I don’t like being loud.

Locuralacura,

Have you ever tried swimming? No sweat, no loudness, great cardio.

Moonguide,

Used to swim when I was a kid, was pretty good too apparently. Coach wanted to put me in a pre-15 y/o (10-15 y/o) competition when I was 6 or 7. Got cold feet and dipped out. I dunno if I could take it as an alternative though, I’ve done it now and again but it feels like running. I prefer HIT and even that I don’t love.

Locuralacura,

I love swimming because of the rhythm, the breathing, the form and it feels like flying. It’s also very quiet. Like the noise of the world goes away first. And eventually, when I find my rhythm, my brain stops it’s busyness. People tell me this about running, but running just hurts my knees a bit.

What’s it like working night shift?

  • constant fatigue
  • constantly explaining to the same people over and over that you are not available in the daytime because that’s when you sleep

source: worked night shift for many years

hibbfd,

also weight gain. I worked 6pm-6am for almost 2 years straight and gained 40lbs without changing my eating habits.

started drinking every morning after work too. and days (nights) off were a total clusterfuck. wake up, hit the grocery store before they close, start drinking because wtf else am I gonna do at 11pm alone in my camper with no wifi and spotty cell signal. my experience is probably not the norm lol

DBT,
@DBT@kbin.social avatar

If you started drinking everyday your eating habits changed. You started taking in more calories.

everett, in What's a good way to prank your coworker?

Here’s one I started planning but never got around to actually pulling off. My team had recently moved from Windows to Mac, had a habit of leaving for lunch at the same time and for some reason never, ever locked their screens.

The prank would go like this: I’d grab a copy of a classic Mac emulator, a System 7 disk image and copies of all the Adobe apps circa 1980-whatever, so that they would come back from lunch one day to find all their beefy new Macbook Pros “downgraded” to looking like this, complete with working Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.

I deeply regret not doing this.

CarlCook, in What exercises can I do to strengthen my willpower?

In most cases it is not a lack of willpower but rather an exhaustion of the same. Try do arrange your daily routine around things you WANT to do and limit the things that burn attention and mental energy (doom-scrolling social media, ….).

It’s all about managing your (dopamine) resources economically.

Knightfall, in What's the point of buying new phones every years?
@Knightfall@lemmy.ca avatar

In Canada, for years, you were almost a fool for not upgrading your device every two years. The “regular” plans we all had involved a 2-yr contract in which time your phone would be paid off. But after that term was up, the monthly bill remained exactly the same. It was stupid, but a lot of Canadians just said, “Welp. Might as well upgrade then.” Then the CRTC here stepped up and told the big three carriers here to knock it off.

I had a Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ that I held onto for three and a half years. That was the longest I’d ever kept a smartphone. It was going strong too. Alas, I found out security updates were knocked down to quarterly from monthly. And after this year, it would receive nothing more. I reluctantly looked into the Galaxy S23 Ultra as a replacement and thanks to a good deal, I have that phone now. It’s an amazing device too and I hope it carries me for another 3+ years.

iamdisillusioned,

Same in the US. You’d pretty much just pay tax and could get a free phone every two years. Since that ended, I had a S7 for 4 years then only upgraded to a S9+ for a bigger screen. Every new phone I’ve ever had has been an upgrade and for the first time there’s almost no way to upgrade. I know I’m in the minority but I want an SD card slot and headphone jack; I use them all the time.

Kelsenellenelvial,

I used to do that about 10-15 years ago. I think the subsidies got to be not as good around the same time that phone prices rose sharply. Whereas you might have previously paid $200, and gotten a $500 subsidy for a $700 MSRP phone, now that $500 off a $1000+ MSRP doesn’t seem like as good a deal. I think they also widened the pricing gap between the prepaid and post paid plans, and/or started offering “discounts” for BYOD plans. Seems like the last couple upgrades the cheapest option for me now is to just buy the phone outright and then find a cheap plan.

For anyone in Saskatchewan, check out LUM mobile. It’s a Sasktel run MVNO that actually has a unique pricing structure that’s pretty competitive.

Version, in What password manager do you recommend?

Definitely Bitwarden, but there‘s also a new product from Proton called Proton Pass. It works similarly to Bitwarden, but a few features are still missing.
