IonAddis, in What are the bad patterns of Reddit to never repeat on Lemmy?
@IonAddis@lemmy.world avatar

Making all these posts on Lemmy be about another site.

The community won’t flourish if the only thing people are talking about is their social-media ex.

xavier666,

I think we need to give it some time. I was not there when Digg went bad but I’m assuming that in the early days of Reddit, there was a lot of discussion about Digg. Once Reddit reached a critical mass, posts about Digg died down.

Serinus,

There’s a lot of discussion about Twitter imploding too. It’s not just that it’s an ex for most of us. It’s also the tech implosion.

uhauljoe,
@uhauljoe@lemmy.world avatar

Also Meta wants to join the fediverse with Threads.

A lot of it is just people talking about their social media ex, but it IS part of a larger discussion about taking the internet back from corporations.

GoodEye8,

To make the ex metaphor. Talking shit about your ex is not productive but talking about what was wrong or didn’t work can be very insightful. Entirely blocking your ex out of your mind is a pretty easy way to make the same mistakes again.

I can see why people think it’s annoying but I think this is also a good thing. Talking about this helps people understand what they want to see in their communities or instances.

DRUMS_, in How are new communities created on Lemmy?

Ok, thanks. My instance is reddthat.com (relatively small I believe) and I don’t think I see a way to create a community. I will reach out to the instance admin and see if that is currently by design.

I’d say people worrying about Karma.

sociablefish,

karma (or upvotes-downvotes aka simple karma) shouldn’t be a reason to disallow someone from using a lemmy community

deegeese,

Requiring minimum positive karma is stupid when it can be gamed so easily.

Someone with very negative karma is likely a troll.

royche,

this /s

Hazzia,

I get the objective need for the /s in this particular context, but we absolutely should add “using /s when the sarcasm should be obvious for anyone with basic reading comprehension skills” to the list

ShaggyDemiurge,
@ShaggyDemiurge@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I don’t agree, /s is immensely useful for neurodivergent people, some of which cannot recognize sarcasm at all.

Also, really often something that is “obvious sarcasm” for you is a genuinely held belief by someone online. Nothing is too ridiculous for the internet

WarmSoda,

Maybe internet forums aren’t the best place for people that can’t recognize context.

Why should we exclude neurodiverse people from a space when it’s easy enough to make it accessible?

iamak, in I'm the author of an April Fool's Internet Standard, AMA

What other such joke standards (by you or others) do you like?

Two9A,

A little lower down the stack, I always liked the Evil Bit in TCP, a standard which removes all need for firewalls heuristics by requiring malware or packets with evil intent to set the Evil Bit. The receiver can simply drop packets with the Evil Bit set, and thus be entirely safe forever from bad traffic.

At the physical interface layer where data meets real life, I especially enjoy IP over Avian Carrier; that link in particular is to the QoS definition which extends the original spec for carrying packets by carrier pigeon.

With the advances on SDcards, IPoAC is getting better and better.

Two9A,

As the saying goes, “for bandwidth, nothing beats a truck full of tapes 1TB MicroSDs hurtling down the highway”.

helixdaunting,

Excuse me while I stare at my big hairy (proud!) feet as I try to figure out whether or not you just insulted me.

boonhet, in I'm the author of an April Fool's Internet Standard, AMA

I have no questions, but I want to let people here know that there are two excellent websites related to this: http.cat and http.dog, for looking up HTTP status codes.

For an example, if http.cat/418 doesn’t brighten your day, I don’t think there’s much that can.

j4k3, in I'm the author of an April Fool's Internet Standard, AMA
@j4k3@lemmy.world avatar

What’s your take on the fediverse frontier?

Two9A,

I think it’s excellent out here. I was stuck on Reddit for the longest time, and this recent debacle has pushed me to explore the networks at the edge; this feels a lot more like the Internet of old. The analogy of email is apt, I think, with the accounts on multiple servers and the interplay between.

breakingcups, in I'm the author of an April Fool's Internet Standard, AMA

How do you feel about 418 being included in many legitimate http libraries?

Two9A,

It’s great: the Internet should have a bit of that sense of whimsy, and knowing that there’s official support in many libraries for “you’re asking me for coffee, but I’m a teapot” is one of those things that gets me through the day.

Windex007, in What's a true fact that is so misleading it's borderline misinformation?

Women have smaller brains than men.

I mean, yes. Women as a population are physically smaller than men as a population.

Women have smaller fingers than men. Smaller eyes. Smaller lungs. There is no “gotcha” that smaller skeletal frames with smaller skulls contain, by volume, a smaller organ.

Doesnt mean every man’s brain is larger than every woman’s brain either.

Doesn’t mean men are smarter than women.

It’s just a statistic, that while true, doesn’t imply what some people think it does.

Nollij, in What's the general consensus on making private fediverse instances?

There are plenty of people that do this, and it seems to be pretty straightforward.

There is a significant risk going forward though- if the undesirables (the ones that currently get larger instances defederated) start doing this in any major way, then the larger instances will block new federation or smaller instances by default. Starting now is actually probably a good move, since you might be grandfathered in when that occurs.

Also, be aware of local laws regarding content you host. You could be liable for illegal content you inadvertantly receive.
