What’s worse though is the other PC in the living room. I have an iMac for the kid to use and steam is also ending support for macOS 10.14… that is a much bigger problem! 10.14 is the last version of macOS that supports 32 bit applications. When steam stops running in that system, we’ll be locked out from about 75% of the Mac game library…
I’ve already tried mint on the iMac and it was hell. I’ve never really used Linux myself, but everyone said mint is so great, so easy. But I had no parental controls, no ability to recover when it crashed, just problems with everything and no ability to manage them. It was awful. I got the mac for the simple os and Linux defeats the entire purpose. I reinstalled the MacOS.
The Irishman - It was so highly recommended by many but I could only go through half the movie (which is 3h long) and despite having watched 90 mins I couldn’t bring myself to watch the second half or recap what happened in the first. Maybe too much flew over my head but it bored me too much and I couldn’t see the appeal at all.
Scorsese does that, and he’s done it again. He needs a better editor who could shorten the runtime without losing the flow. Irishman was no Goodfellas but it was a decent story. Agree it wasn’t worth the slow pace though. I think attention spans are typically shorter these days and people expect a bigger payoff than they tend to get, outside of Marvel and porn.
Oh, I didn’t mind the slow pace that much but I couldn’t see what the movie was getting at as it seemed like a diary entry of a mafioso. The overarching elements throughout the first half somehow didn’t appeal to me. Marvel has been going downhill for quite a while but that’s a different topic
Indeed. That’s what editing does to a film - it helps the story make sense. It’s the only thing that makes film an art form different from any other imo. Acting is art, cinematography is art, music/scoring is art. Directing is only art if it adds some new interpretation.
My joke about Marvel and porn is that their payoff is in some form of orgasm - special effects that wow audiences or literally make them ejaculate.
I don’t use one because I feel that the more people use ad blockers, the more intrusive and annoying the ads will be for people that aren’t using one, and less overall content will be available for free. The only ads that I can’t stand are video ads, and that’s why I have YouTube premium.
The more intrusive and annoying the ads become, the more people will retaliate. This is war. eventually we will smash out those annoying ads. somehow. There must be some other more civilized pleasant method for companies to make profit. This is getting out of hand.
well I remember in the late 1970s when cable TV became a thing, the concept was you pay for it so there are no ads.
Then guess what happened?
few years later we were still paying for cable TV and then they started including ads. We were outraged at first but then it became normal and we got used to it.
Now YouTube is doing it, including ads even though we’re paying for it
Amazon prime is doing it, including ads even though we’re paying for it
and other streaming services, I can’t name everything but pretty much every company is doing it. Even though people are paying for the service, there are still ads.
YouTube is not doing it, I use YT premium and I never get a single ad. Ever.
And I know that ad supported cheaper versions of a lot of streaming services are becoming more common, but, to my knowledge, all of them have an ad free option. It may be more expensive than their cheapest tier, but they do have an ad free option.
If you want to see the internet less dependent on ads, the only way to do that is to be willing to pay for it yourself. Because streaming video content online is actually extremely expensive to do. And someone has to pay for it. If you as the consumer aren’t paying for it then someone has to pay for it on your behalf. They’re only going to do that if they can get something out of the deal.
YouTube subscription does have traction… And like I said, every streaming service has an ad free option. Some of them have an ad supported cheaper option, but they all have some option that allows you to consume the content without ads. It seems like you’re kind of just talking out of your ass.
There’s an economics of everything at play here, broadcast television had ads, cable TV at first didn’t but it was also significantly more expensive. Cable TV wanted to lower prices to attract more customers, and in order to do that they started receiving more money from advertisers to make up the difference. Not all of the cable TV channels did this. However, even to this very day there are plenty of cable TV channels that don’t have ads. They are considered the premium channels that you have to pay extra for.
The same thing is going to continue to be true on the internet as well, You will always have options to avoid ads by paying for the content that you want.
I was curious so I looked it up but everything I could find said 0% protein for Tazo English breakfast, so I went to my box of tea, another brand English breakfast, and alongside the table with the information for just the tea infusion (calories are specified as less than 4kcal, <4kcal) is another table for a serving with 30ml semi-skimmed milk with 1.2g protein. Could you post maybe a picture of the labeling?
Just so everyone knows, since upvotes are public on the Fediverse anyway, I only upvoted this because it was the first response I saw when I opened the thread and it caused me to physically crack up laughing.
For shame on your immature and uninformative comment, otherwise. For shaaaaaame.
Highly recommend bright light therapy the moment you wake up or at the desired wakeup time. I can’t imagine what it must be like for those unaware of these things, the darkness would have me on the brink
Imma do a second “dose” right now, the alternative reality makes me shudder
Can you elaborate? I’ve seen these, I’ve seen what they’re “supposed” to do, but can you explain from your personal POV how it helps you, if that makes sense?
It does a few things but it basically entrains your circadian rhythms that mediate wakefulness and sleep. I’m no scientist but they are helpful for both insomnia and depression (particularly SAD) and I find it to be an indispensible part of my morning routine in waking me up and orienting me and fixing my sleep to a proper schedule.
And the light is important in the winter anyway because of the dreariness and darkness but I can’t justify why
Thank you! It sounds like one of these would be very helpful for me. I’m a night owl who works in a 9-5 world, and waking up in the morning is a huge mix of depression and anxiety even if I’ve gotten 6-7 hours of sleep or so.
I wear a sleep mask so it never really helped me all that much even though I have one and experimented with it. I’ll never dispose of it but it more or less collects dust
Glad its working for ya. I always thought it was strange how much emphasis is placed on having a hermetically-sealed dark room for sleep when its like, just get a good sleeping mask and literally rest your eyes
I tried the sleep mask and earplugs because that’s what they say helps but sleep me just takes it all off cause I have some weird sensory issues. I need some blackout curtains :(
Not really a school assignment, if anything it’s based on a common family discussion. The ending is dramatized though because I thought it would make it feel more like the kind of question it’s supposed to be, but based on people taking it literally, it seems not.
I’ve been struggling with this too, but doing ok mostly. Here’s what works for me:
Spend time with people who make me feel hope instead of despair. It sounds like you know some entitled assholes; don’t spend time with them if they don’t improve you.
Focus on local. What is happening right around me? What can I do to make it better? How am I interacting with my immediate environment?
Focus on what is improving. In many, many ways it’s better now that it has been at any time in human history. Women have more freedom and power now than they ever have. I can learn anything I want to, find out anything I want to, almost instantly. More people are aware of systemic oppression now than ever before, and more people are willing to resist it than ever before.
Pick what to be mad about. There are too many things to be angry about, so I try to pick the ones that I think are the most worth it. For me, they are: wealth accumulation (we’ve come so far, and built such a great civilization, and we let a few rich fuckers loot it. It was a mistake! We tricked ourselves into thinking it was a good idea! But we’re realizing it’s not, and it’s fixable) and systemic racism in the US (Black infants in America being twice as likely to die before they reach a year old than white infants is UNACCEPTABLE). Yeah, there’s an infinite amount of other shitty stuff, but I’m only one person.
Picking and choosing social media/other news sources that don’t send me into a doom spiral. I don’t go on Twitter. I don’t go on Reddit any more. I don’t have Lemmy on my phone (sorry Lemmy, nothing personal, but it’s a bad doomscrolling hole for me). I go on Discord and I read blogs I subscribe to.
I believe that a person can only handle three big things at a time, and everything else needs to take a back seat to those three. You have your business, your family, and your medical debt. Those are your three burdens. When one of them gets light enough, you can take on something else. Gender equality and entitled rich people and identity politics are not your burdens right now. They can take a back burner until other stuff gets better for you.
If there was such a thing, a “Chinese learners” community for anglophones would be very welcome. I am trying to learn Chinese currently and it would be neat to have an online forum to bounce questions off of.
It’s as noisy as an air conditioner. Because it is an air conditioner — just run in reverse. Some AC compressors are noisier than others depending on manufacturer and quality.
That said, the two noisy parts are in my basement and outside, so meh, whatever. It’s never bothered me. Every now and then I’ll be in the basement when it kicks on, and it’s mostly just reassuring, like at least that things still working fine.
