Asus Zenphone? I’m not sure if it’s absolutely top notch specs but every review I’ve ever seen for it loves it. And it’s tiny. I love my phones as big as possible so I’ve never tried it but I’ve always wanted a bigger version of it so that I could.
Software support is quite a downside though. Asus is not great at supporting their Zenphones in comparison to other manufacturers. You only get around 2 years of OS updates (and 4 years of security updates? I guess it differs for each phone a little) The hardware looks great, but this was the reason to not buy it for me as I usually use phone for 4-5 years.
I went with the Pixel 8 Pro, I do really love the extra camera features, but the phone is just so big. I was using a regular Pixel 8 the other day and it was so comfy.
Of course it depends on body size and style of trousers you prefer. If you rock Cargo pants you will have no issues for sure :D Ask a female friend for example, i guess lot of them cannot fit a modern phone into there pockets
When was the last time you saw a dedicated front facing flash? I think most of the time these days it’s a quick increase and brightness and your screen turning white.
it’s a small led that flashes if there’s a notification, you could customize it for only certain notifications or even different colors. it’s pretty much been replaced by AOD.
For me the Galaxy Nexus was the peak of enthusiast phone joy. Notification LED was bright and colorful, replaceable battery (to be fair, this was necessary because battery life was so short), unlocked by default, slightly curved front glass made it a pleasure to use as a phone. I also liked the ceramic back of the Essential Phone. The back fingerprint sensors on most phone models were so much more practical than the in-screen options and provided a handy way to lower the notification tray. I miss the litltle touch navigation nubbin on my Droid Incredible, which was handy for scrolling around without touching the screen.
I also miss how open Android was; Google has been gradually cracking down on enthusiast use cases in the name of “security” like text backup no longer being possible for Play Store apps, email access locked down (requiring a security audit for apps to access GMail), scoped storage screwed up a lot of use cases as well.
The in-laws know I love to cook and got me a (to me, they're familiar with the author through some TV show) random cookbook. It's aimed at people who don't know how to cook and lack confidence trying. Also who cook with things like Velveeta and cream of mushroom soup.
Can second the replaceable batteries and extendable storage.
However I don’t mind the lack of a headphone jack, because they make affordable dongle dacs now. I think instead of a headphone jack phones should just have 2 usb c ports
Dacs are great, I have one for my IEMs and love it. But only when im sitting. As soon as any movement happens I am occasionally punished when the cable moves 1mm out of its port with noise or complete sound stoppage. I can use my TWS but sound quality and reliability suffers.
Replacement batteries should be a legal requirement. My 5 year old android phone needed a new battery and people kept telling me to get a new one as the phone is old anyway. It still does what I need so why should I get a new one just because of a battery.
I ended up taking the phone apart myself and replacing it. Wasn’t easy and took me over 2 hours.
I’m up for anything which keeps phones working for longer. Such a waste of money and resources for what should be a simple job.
To be fair, expandable storage as we’ve had it sucks. MicroSD cards cause a lot of issues, and a good chunk of Android apps block the ability to use them. Connecting an SSD to your phone is a much better experience.
Lots of phones still have those. Notably all Redmi phones have a SD card slot, and Redmi still sells new phones with IR blaster, and most have a headphone jack too.
I’ve looked into those phones, the specs look nice but they don’t work in my region, unfortunately rural areas of the US don’t have Tower support for those style models(yay refusal to upgrade any sort of infrastructure). many of my friends that are overseas have stated that they love the phones though.
Yeah but they’re all the lower end phones, all the major flagships removed the features three or four versions ago, I don’t want to have to sacrifice camera or screen quality in order to have features that should be built into phones by default
That’s really that is why I went with the phone I have, out of the phones that I looked at all of them were a downgrade for the screen, and generally camera. Or lacked the tower support in my area since we barely have LTE
I’m going to say that today, even on lower-end phones, the screen, processor and camera are all pretty decent.
I have a Motorola G31, which cost about 200€ one year ago, when I got it. It has a Micro SD Card Slot and a headphone jack. The screen is plenty good (1440p,60hz) (why would you need 120hz or 4k on a phone) And the camera is also quite nice. It has no fancy features, but it takes pictures and that’s all I need.
From my perspective, flagship phones are impractical and overpriced to say the least.
My old factory job was a 24h operation. Going 5-5 makes more sense than going 8-8 because managers that want to talk to both teams would rather stay until 6 than come in at 7.
Not necessarily making them easier, but making it so that one shift worth of management and office/engineering staff can effectively support 2 manufacturing shifts.
The managers could come in at 5, but then they only have a couple hours at best to interface with 2nd shift
8-8 also makes doing anything outside of work nearly impossible on work days. You can generally find doctors, dentists, mechanics, etc. Open after 5, but finding them open before 8 is generally harder.
Seeing how some communities have bots. Who post Reddit content on to Lemmy. Also since the 0.19 update, users can block instances. So nothing will happen. If Reddit does that.

Yeah, except certain people won’t see it that way and will bitch instead then demand an entire instance defederate rather than curate their own feed. /sigh
I switched to duck duck go who knows how many years ago. Haven’t looked back.
Can’t even remember when I started using Firefox, but that was probably around the time when Opera became popular. Before Crome existed, I was already on FF and never regretted staying there. At that point, I was already somewhat aware of privacy matters, so switching to Chrome seemed completely stupid to me.
I went thru many of his songs after discovering "The Search". "When I grow up" is great ... the subtle comedy in the kitchen scene is brilliant. He's quite the lyrical genius!
