londos, in Honestly - How much will you sacrifice for a better world?

I think people are willing to sacrifice more than even they would expect, but no one wants to be the only one sacrificing, especially if it puts them at a disadvantage compared to others. But collectively, if people sacrificed together, it could even become a point of pride. It’s why countries develop strong solidarity in times of war.

There was a text based game sample pack on Apple II C that I can’t remember the name of.

If you typed in a command too simple, it would give a preprogrammed response, apparently offended that you took the game for an idiot. You could look around, pick up items that it described, open and close drawers, go up and down stairs, unlock doors if you find the key, dig in the ground if you find a shovel, all through typing in actions and reading the text that came up in response.

There were at least 3 samples on the floppy disk, one an adventure on a crashed spaceship, one finding a buried treasure in a desert, and one centered around a white house (not the White House, but a house that was white.) All the samples ended just when it got interesting and advertised where to get the full games.

Edit: the whole idea of gaming on an Apple 2c seems foreign to every single person I have ever mentioned it to. Someone must have done it, because my family found 2 different computers at garage sales in the 90s that each came with stacks of games on 3 inch floppy disks. Some where educational games, I learned to type properly with one of those. Some were bootleg versions of popular games with handwritten labels. The original Maria Bros comes to mind as one of those, it was on a disk with Joust. Some were the original floppy disk from the publisher. Oregon Trail was one we spent countless hours on, and I especially liked Wings of Fury.

Denjin,

Are you thinking of the Infocom library of games? Most famous of which would be Zork or Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infocom

Which you can download the complete collection freely here:

eblong.com/infocom/

You’d need to work how to actually run them.

@Usernameblankface@lemmy.world avatar

Infidel is definitely the one about finding treasure in the sand, so it must have been a sampler from Infocom

serpineslair, in What is your unpopular flim opinion

Texas Chainsaw Massacre (the original) was a terrible film. The only reason people say it is the greatest classic horror film is because of nostalgia. The acting was horrible and it wasn’t scary in the slightest (I understand it was probably for the time).

thisbenzingring,

its a terrible movie but its a fucking amazing film.

if you ever watch it again, look at its edits and specifically the gore. You never actually see Leatherface inflicting any damage on someone. It’s always a trick of the mind that you see the violence but it never actually happens on the screen.

I agree its kinda lame but it is actually an amazing creation.

serpineslair,

Wasn’t there a scene where you saw someone’s leg sliced into with the chainsaw?

thisbenzingring,

They used pigs blood and maybe there’s a cutting but it would have been framed in a way that it just makes you believe it’s someone’s leg.

I studied film in college and that film was one of our subjects because of the diy and extremely low budget it had while creating something that is still considered peerless

TheEighthDoctor,

Same for the original Japanese Ringu

JimVanDeventer,

I only saw it this year and wasn’t expecting much, but the cinematography is gorgeous.

gzrrt, in Is there an artist so horrible that no matter how hard you try that you cannot separate their art from them?
@gzrrt@kbin.social avatar

Kanye West. Maybe he was never 'all there' mentally to begin with, but the guy was clearly a role model to a lot of young people and utterly destroyed his own legacy.

monz,
@monz@pawb.social avatar

Yep, I was a young person that loved Kanye back in high school when Graduation was the CD I had on me all the time.

Can’t listen to it anymore. It’s ruined. :{

tuxtey,

Twas a verbal match for the centuries. My children shall know of this day.

Guntrigger,

I think people want to know why they are shitty people.

I can answer after looking at their wiki: seems they like grooming and assaulting kids.

9715698,

Die Antwoord is the answer.

shinigamiookamiryuu, in Is there an artist so horrible that no matter how hard you try that you cannot separate their art from them?

I wouldn’t say the horribleness of a person is ever something that makes someone inseparable from their art. The art and the person just don’t necessitate each other. That said, I’m pretty sure someone might make a case for Nero, he burnt people on living candles and called it “art” and would lock people in concerts to hear him perform (if we assume the historical records are true). Relatedly, Saddam Hussein wrote a lot of fanfiction about defeating America with negative undertones that would make a Wattpad writer cringe.

wjrii,
@wjrii@kbin.social avatar

if we assume the historical records are true

This is actually a pretty big assumption for some of the more outlandish claims. When you dig in a bit, you find many of them are kind of repetitive tropes and generally come from Senatorial-class writers about emperors whose policies were less friendly to that class.

Not to say they couldn't have happened, and even in those days better to exaggerate than to invent from whole cloth, but it seems like an unusually large number of "bad" emperors had the same kinks as each other or the same traits that the literature had always considered "unmanly."

LEDZeppelin, in Is there an artist so horrible that no matter how hard you try that you cannot separate their art from them?

Kanye. Piece of shit narcissist through and through.

corsicanguppy,

Apparently Kanye has copied some great music, and we’ll know for sure if he ever releases some.

chitak166,

It was always funny watching him talk about Jesus in his songs as though his lifestyle didn’t promote everything Christ went against.

And of course, the next generation sucked it up like a sponge.

burgers,

yeah kanye for me too. used to be my favorite artist, paid out the ass for tickets on multiple tours, knew all the words to his first like, six albums. haven’t listened to him in like a year and a half after the Alex Jones interview and Adidas stories came out. it’s not even virtue signaling, it’s just too much work to not think about all the horrible shit he’s done and said. i count myself extremely lucky that i never got a tattoo

blazeknave,

Exactly, it’s laborious separating them. Even shit he’s just produced like Hov or Pusha T. My favorite songs come on shuffle in the car, vibin, 30 sec in… “oh shit… right… hmm… ugh… argghhh” next track

RBWells, in What is the most unusual spirit you have in your home bar?

You should post this in !cocktails too.

There are a couple of things I have to order online, that aren’t in the shop here but I like - Heirloom Pineapple Amaro is one. I do make liqueurs so those I guess are the rarest. Like someone else in this thread, I tried infusing cocoa nibs, but in whiskey and it was similarly awful.

stoy,

I wanted the largest reach to get as many responses as possible, so this community seemed like the best bet.

Lileath, in What's the best gaming console and why?
@Lileath@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

The steam deck is a portable pc that looks like a handheld console.

wolfshadowheart,

All consoles are portable PC’s.

PixxlMan,

Nah, a PC is a specific thing, not just any computing device. Most modern consoles are custom architecture and systems. Not PC compatible.

Lileath,
@Lileath@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Yes, but most aren’t able to be used like a laptop/desktop PC. You can’t install any software from outside the official repository on a Xbox or Playstation whereas the Steam Deck is just a handheld laptop with Linux as the OS.

Symbian, mobile Java games

jodanlime,
@jodanlime@midwest.social avatar

There were some legit games for symbian

Crafter72, (edited )
@Crafter72@lemmy.world avatar

As someone who back then experienced symbian java/java games on my father’ and brother’ phone, I partially agree. For some reason back in 2010-2012, here on Indonesia, cheap Symbian based phone are booming. You can buy a cheap symbian phone with preloaded mp3s and some java .jar games from local phone booth. For me personally I played those java games on my brother Nokia E63 (which is fun) or my father’ Sony Ericson phone (forgot which model). Java games solely responsible for me to discover Gameloft that made those knockoff mobile games (but fun given how simple it was back then).

EDIT: Perhaps due to difference how regional tecnoloical advancement back then but here earliest I got more modern phone was in 2013 when I got my own Lenovo A369i which running Android Jelly Bean. Learn myself how to root my phone to gain more of my system (back then I was first year of Middle School). Symbian phones was one of mobile era that I fond of because it was very close to my memory of being a kid.

On similar topic, Blackberry based phone was big here in Indonesia when most of higher class use Blackberry Messenger as form of chatting, never had myself a Blackberry due to how expensive they were on Indonesia

someguy3, (edited ) in What's the best gaming console and why?

Super Nintendo because it’s super.

BruceTwarzen,

Still mad they never made a mega nintendo

tal,

Given the trend to make “Super” variants of games for the Super Nintendo, we could have seen “Mega Mega Man”.

magic_lobster_party,

That’s why Mega Drive was always superior

MiDaBa,

They were originally going to call the Nintendo 64 the Ultra 64. That’s about as mega as it gets.

willya, in Why are Some Apps Updated Daily?
@willya@lemmyf.uk avatar

Some apps are a community effort with multiple contributors. Voyager is one of those. This may have been better asked in no stupid questions. Why would you not want the latest bug fixes and features immediately after they’ve been approved?

wildginger,

Because Im not a beta tester, and understand that the fastest way to make a bug is to patch a different one.

I dont think this question should be in no stupid questions, but I am curious about a paired sub about answers.

@DessertStorms@kbin.social avatar

I would unironically have "what what in the butt" as my doorbell and lmao if anyone ever rang it (I don't get a lot of visitors, and if I do they don't ring the bell, so it would, at the very least, reduce some anxiety of a stranger ringing the bell as I hide and wait for them to leave 😂)

Tattorack, in If You Had to Worship or be the Champion of an Ancient Greek God/Goddess Which One Would You Pick?

Dionysius.

He’s really fun at parties. Hates oppressive, overreaching powers. Destroys anyone that opposed the freedoms of his followers with a literal plant stem. I don’t see many drawbacks.
