TeaHands, in Why do people hate on mobile games, call them "not real games" and mock them, when some mobile-exclusive games are the best games I've played?
@TeaHands@lemmy.world avatar

People just like to dunk on things to make themselves feel better. And this can be especially a thing in gaming because lots of gamers are badly-adjusted and desperately need to feel better. It’s nothing really to do with mobile games specifically at all, you see the same thing with anything outside of the very narrow window of “real” games ie the games these people happen to be into.

It’s one thing to have a preference, it’s quite another to look down on other people for having a different one. We’re all just choosing to spend our time staring at pixels on a screen.

PlogLod,

We’re all just choosing to spend our time staring at pixels on a screen.

So true lol. Slightly unrelated but I had an epiphany once that we use our touch devices so frequently, and of course we’re interacting with data in different ways, but physically we’re just sliding our fingers around on a pane of glass with lights behind it all the time. Must look so weird to monkeys 😂

TeaHands,
@TeaHands@lemmy.world avatar

Monkeys, and old people who never learned it! My grandma can just about manage to call me on WhatsApp but sometimes I’ll try and demonstrate basically anything else and she genuinely can’t see the difference between gestures I’m using, or which parts of the app are interactive or not.

Same in gaming. She saw me playing WoW once in about 2008 and I remember her being genuinely confused about how I could possibly tell what was my character and what was everything else. Even though, you know, your character is always in the middle of the screen. Just couldn’t grasp it no matter how long she sat and watched!

Bless 😅

Sure there is a ton of elitism in gaming but are we going to ignore mobile games are the birthplace of the shit monetization we see in modern AAA gaming. There is a reason why sports games and mobile games were the only gaming related things Konami wanted to do for the longest time (now they are just cashing in on lazy ports). Low expenses, high turnout! Like there are a likely a ton of great games on mobile phones but we can't ignore the market is filled with glorified slot machines. Many mobile gamers have been pushing for this unfortunately.

TeaHands,
@TeaHands@lemmy.world avatar

That wasn’t really OP’s question though. I’m not a fan of mobile games either, mostly for the same reasons as you but also tbh just because I don’t like using my phone for much when I could get a better experience on a bigger screen.

But “I have some problems with the choices of the mobile gaming industry as a whole” is a very different statement to “lol mobile loser why don’t you try some real games?”

ThunderingJerboa,
@ThunderingJerboa@kbin.social avatar

While yes that is the level headed answer but gamers aren't level headed. People associate people with their game choices with the decisions of the developers/publishers all the time. We see this with people who do Gacha, COD, Etc. Where people's hatred is for these people for supporting said things. The "true gamers" see most mobile gamers as gamblers and children because of the industry/monetization around it.

I’m a little surprised that Cake topped my list this year. I don’t recall listening to them more than the Gorillaz.

shalafi, in What's the most comfortable watch you would recommend?

I’ve got a few Swatches. (I’m old, sue me.)

Get 'em new or vintage, but don’t pay more than $40. Light watch, light band, work great. Kinda easy to scratch though. Nothing a buffer won’t fix, but still.

Casio is always a good bet. Got 3 of 'em and only the chonky one is slightly uncomfortable. But that’s for rough outdoor use where I don’t notice.

Just got this one, and it’s weirdly comfortable, more so than any steel band I’ve ever had. Band was hell to adjust, took me 45-minutes, have tools, not coordinated, YMMV.

Tell me more about what you like! I can help you dial in (heh) a cheap one. No experience with high-end stiff.

ayam, in Spotify Wrapped 2023 is out, what's your top artist and top song for the year?

My top artist is King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard and the top song is Magenta Mountain by them.

I wonder if there’s any gizzhead here lol

King Gizz was number 1 on my list this year too. Honestly, surprised how many I’m seeing in this thread lol

I admit, it is not terribly easy to get started. I think the emacs tutorial alone takes half an hour then you need to learn org-mode.

but it’s pretty badass

I hadn’t seen that news. I have tons of notes, being a user from way back. Then I stopped - it got so bloated and not easy to use anymore. I’ll go export mine - thanks for posting.

I use UpNote. Multiplatform, no sub, one time reasonable payment for lifetime. Copy and paste images wsywig with text from the web.

For the first time in many years I’ve no EDM in my top five…feels weird. And apparently, I like A Day to Remember a lot more than I thought.

https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/82e79407-5bed-4ecd-a020-63bc8d8c67f8.png

dingus,

What were your other top genres? Why do you think you’ve transitioned away from EDM? I feel like I’ve been slowly listening to EDM more over the years (and pop is always my staple), but this year R&B managed to sneak its way into my top five.

@RanchOnPancakes@lemmy.world avatar

https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/c0eedf89-b20e-4cc8-b6f4-a5835765e92c.png

Why? Access probably. I get exposed to a lot of EDM from friends and I do really love it a lot. My favorite right now is Apashe.

On the flip side, I’m older. Radio is gone far as I’m concerned so my rock/metal taste have just kind of sat there until this year I got annoyed and for a while made a concerted effort to find new music I like. But now that list has sort of stagnated again. I just don’t have the time.

Radio sucked, and continues to suck. But it did act like a kind of filter for the previous generations. With it gone those few of us who are still interested in new music have a harder time.

dingus,

Ah yeah fair. I try to use Spotify’s algorithms to my advantage to find new stuff I like, but I only seem to resonate with a new song it suggests every now and then.

Years back before Spotify I used to use Pandora. Idk if they are still around but their radio feature always seemed better than Spotify to me. It’s been years though.

RanchOnPancakes, (edited )
@RanchOnPancakes@lemmy.world avatar

I was one of the first subscribers to Pandora. They actually emailed me and gave me 6 months free as a thank you for being the first x number of subscribers. It used to rule. But last time I checked it out I was a bit disappointed. Its like it got dumber somehow.

dingus,

Unfortunate, but not too surprising I guess, especially because it’s not popular anymore.

Pandora used to have the best radio feature, but it just didn’t have a way to go back and play a song you liked. So I switched to Spotify and I guess most others did as well.

stevecole90099,

The main reason I stick with spotify is its generated for me playlists. Some weeks they can be pretty bad but a lot of the time they have songs that I end up adding to my liked songs. It’s actually how I found the top 5th band on my wrapped 2023 and 4 of the 5 top songs.

If you haven’t used the Playlist like discover weekly or the daily mix ones, I highly recommend trying them.

Spotify does have its own radio feature. Find a song and open the context menu and select Go to Song Radio. I use this sometimes but I don’t think it works as well as the playlists.

dingus,

Yeah I use the song radio all the time. Problem is it’s not a true radio but it’s just a pre-made playlist of a certain number of songs. I feel like with Pandora, whenever I started a radio it would morph over time and not just play the same 20 songs on repeat. Maybe I’m misremembering though.

stevecole90099,

I don’t know for sure but I would guess Pandora worked the same, it just didn’t show you the list. There is a feature in Spotify for it to continue playing similar songs once it hits the end of a list but I think the initial list is always the same for that song or artist radio.

dingus,

I don’t think the web player version of Spotify seems to have that feature. Unfortunately, there are a lot of things the web player lacks, but I can’t download the app on my work computer.

When I’m at home I’m usually on my phoje on the mobile app which seems to have most features though.

stevecole90099,

Looks like the web version is lacking it. The apps both desktop and phone support the feature.

One setting is in the apps settings. Auto play will play similar content once the current Playlist ends if repeat (and maybe shuffle?) is off.

In playlists you have made you can toggle Smart Shuffle which mixes recommendations into your shuffled playlist while it is toggled on. It doesn’t seem to work with the radio feature but I think Autoplay does.

Yea, work computers suck, our company blocks spotify at the network so I just have to use my phone and cellular.

There is a smart Playlist called daylist. I haven’t used it much but it updates throughout each day. Might be worth checking out if you want different music at work. https://newsroom.spotify.com/2023-09-12/ever-changing-playlist-daylist-music-for-all-day/

dingus, (edited )

Yeah I like smart shuffle but again it’s not available on the web player. I wonder why Spotify decided to so heavily cripple the web player. I’m guessing somehow they don’t get as much data out of us that way somehow?

I actually can’t use my phone for Spotify at work because I have to use a specific Bluetooth headset connected to my work computer.

Daylist sounds like an interesting feature. Thanks, I may check it out!

acceptable_pumpkin,

Try the Spotify DJ feature. Still in Beta, but seems fun.

dingus,

I have been enjoying it a fair bit, but I wish it was just a random shuffle and didn’t have the annoying voice interrupting every few songs

acceptable_pumpkin,

I’m actually having fun with the DJ feature as well. Sure it need some tuning, but I like how it switches up genres and plays different types of music.

stevecole90099,

Does the “DJ” talk a lot? I saw that yesterday, but when I clicked it, they went on for a while to introduce themselves, and I noped out of it because listening to a DJ talk is exactly why I avoid listening to the radio anymore.

acceptable_pumpkin,

“He” talks the most the first time since he introduces the concept. Then be seems to jump in every 5ish songs to switch up the genre, like “let’s go back to 2020 and play some of your favorite songs” or “here are some songs from when you were growing up”.

Been wearing watches for a very long time, and I have no real insight. All I can say is that the Apple Watch is extremely comfortable (using the base strap that comes with it—no idea of others). The part that touches you is very smooth. Prior I wore mechanical watches and honestly never paid them much mind. I will say most “men’s” watches are often overly large and heavy. As a man I have never enjoyed that aesthetic and have always opted for smaller watches (Seriously If someone is so insecure about their gender that they need a fucking tuna can strapped to their wrist i don’t know where to begin).

One of my older ones was “WeDontHaveWifi” because people would say “what’s your wifi?” and we would tell them that and sometimes they would say “ohh, ok” and not ask for the password, haha. Password, incidentally, was “whatPassword?”
