Lifecoach5000, in Unix and Linux System Administration Handbook?

I’m a newb myself. Just put Ubuntu on a free laptop I got from work and set up a Plex media server.

I am slowly working my way through this vid to get my feet wet with very basic stuff:

shinigamiookamiryuu, in [solved] What is this new Lemmy.world icon we see since yesterday ?

A turkey, a reference to Thanksgiving in the US which is tomorrow.

A_A, (edited )
@A_A@lemmy.world avatar

it’s quite nice mix of a turkey and a lemming
I thought someone would answer quickly, 85 second in this case, so I was ready to put the flare that reads : [solved]

Thanks be given to you dear Leni.
Thanks also to @EndOfLine for the same

Attack0fthenerd, in What current U.S presidential candidates are most in favor of legalizing pot?

Technically Biden, but ehhhhhhhhhhhhhh. He isn’t pro-legalisation but is the most likely route. As the cannabis industry gains more money and momentum it’s really just a matter of time, but there are Republicans actively fighting against it. So, do with that, what you will. Also don’t be fooled by libertarians, they will try to draw you in with pot and legal sex work, but that’s a trap.

JoeKrogan, in If another species on Earth began to develop civilization, how would you like to see them approached?
@JoeKrogan@lemmy.world avatar

Humans would probably kill them or enslave them for profit. 😩

Fredselfish,
@Fredselfish@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah no way would we sit back and let other intelligent species go unmolested. We are the bad guys in all the alien invasion movies.

Uranium_Green,

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_with_the_Newts

A short story about this from the same Czech author who (IIRC) gave us the concept and word ‘robot’.

AngryCommieKender, (edited )

Well, robot means (originally meant?) something a bit different in Czech. As I understand it, robots were basically indentured servants/ slaves. It means something like “one who doesn’t think.” At least that is if all the Isaac Asimov videos I’ve watched are correct.

buzz86us, in If another species on Earth began to develop civilization, how would you like to see them approached?

What of the civilization was established by rats in a Walmart distribution center?

Spacehooks,

Skaven?

doublejay1999, in If another species on Earth began to develop civilization, how would you like to see them approached?
@doublejay1999@lemmy.world avatar

It depends. Are they delicious?

jedi,

Lol, for real though, if deliciousness determined the fate of species, we’d live in a wild world. Imagine sophisticated tuna cities getting raided for sushi. Thank goodness we don’t snack on concrete, or we’d all be living in tents. We’re basically the galaxy’s weirdos who eat anything that doesn’t eat us first. 😆

MargotRobbie, in What game do you play to just chill?
@MargotRobbie@lemmy.world avatar

I play farming games on emulators on my phone usually.

But when I’m too stressed or tired, I don’t really have the energy to play games, just lay on my bed, put something on in the background, and sleep.

vudu,

Hey! which farming games are your favorite? I've been looking at this genre

MargotRobbie,
@MargotRobbie@lemmy.world avatar

Stardew Valley, Rune Factory 4, Friends of Mineral Town, and that’s pretty much it.

Masimatutu, in Is lemmy.ml down?

It’s back up now!

morhp, in Do hiccups serve any actual useful biological function?

I believe I read that it helps with lung development when the fetus is swimming in the water in the womb or something like that. But otherwise not really useful.

bestnerd,

Just saw our baby on the ultrasound do them. Doc said it was getting their lungs ready as well. Now when he does them my wife’s belly moves like jello.

over_clox,

Interesting!

If I may ask, how far along is she?

ChexMax,

My baby’s hiccups were visable from the outside at week 32 and before that you could feel them from the outside for a week or two. Very neat! (Not as neat while I’m trying to sleep lol)

bestnerd,

You may!

over_clox,

LOL, it’s not important either way, was just curious like around what point of development can a fetus start having the hiccup reflex…

bestnerd,

Haha sorry, yeah 35 weeks is when it picked up. 32 weeks is when they started a little.

spacecowboy,

13 or 14 months now.

PeWu,

… and still in the womb?

spacecowboy,

Have you SEEN the cost of housing right now?

over_clox,

That baby better be paying on time and with good tips to not be evicted by now!

RoyalEngineering, (edited ) in Is lemmy.ml down?

Yeah, down for me too.

theherk, in Do hiccups serve any actual useful biological function?

A few things. First, the only tip I’ve even been given about getting rid of hiccups is drinking a glass of water upside down. As in, lips to the backside of the glass then leaning forward so far you can drink it. And you must drink quite a bit, maybe 300ml. Is this purely anecdotal? For me and those around me, yes, but maybe there is research about it. But it works for us, without fail, and it seems unbelievable even to me.

Regarding sneezing, I am currently discovering it has another feature where after having a few prosthetic discs inserted into your lower back via your abdomen, a sneeze also doubles as the world’s fastest impetus for suicidal ideation.

Rhoeri, (edited )

A lime wedge with sugar on it. 100% has never not cured hiccups on me or anyone I’ve ever suggested it to- and I’ve worked in bars for a long, LONG time.

over_clox,

I’ve found that usually eating just a spoonful of sugar tends to do the trick for me, but not always.

Luckily I don’t have hiccups today, I just posted the question out of curiosity really.

fylkenny, (edited )

I heard that works because you have to concentrate on it so much, you forget to have hiccups. Holding your breath and then swallowing 5 times without breathing can also help.

Tavarin,
@Tavarin@lemmy.ca avatar

Holding in a very deep breathe for as long as you can can also get rid of hiccups. Works for me at least, and no need to look silly leaned over with a glass of water.

PM_me_your_vagina_thanks,

You don't think that person that had hiccoughs for like, 30 years ever tried that?

over_clox,

Damn, I remember hearing about that case as well, that would have to be an absolute nightmare!

spittingimage,
@spittingimage@lemmy.world avatar

I read an explanation for that, which was that hiccupping is the default mode for the muscles involved, and there’s a part of the brain that suppresses it. The 30-year hiccupper had damage to that part of the brain, so they started and never stopped.

elfin8er,

I’ve also successfully used this trick several times

ShitOnABrick, (edited ) in Do you prefer to wear a smartwatch or a regular watch?
@ShitOnABrick@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve personally been using a apple watch series 2. See no need to upgrade it tells the time battery lasts a long time even after all these years of use and it can tell me my heart rate,play tappybird and I can listen to music on it I bought it used for £40 3 years ago complete with the box extra straps and a charger literally one of the best purchases I think I’ve ever made only compliant is that because the watch was manufactured in 2016 support dropped several years back and support for some applications such as audible has dropped which is a shame

SuperSpruce, in What game do you play to just chill?

Forza Horizon 5. I like to just drive around the map for a while, and maybe do a race or two, until I inevitably get bored after an hour or so. Repeat every week.

(until I bought a real life motorcycle to scratch that itch, and no, I’m not racing or being dangerous on my motorcycle)

SheDiceToday,

Ah, but which one do you have? Because you know, there’s this other motorcycle that can do X…

Slightly kidding, but “the correct amount of motorcycles is N+1, where N is your current amount” mentality is a real thing.

SuperSpruce,

I currently have a '06 Suzuki GZ250. I got it 3 months ago and already have put 1600 miles on it.

I’m already getting the itch for a faster motorcycle, though. I first test rode a Harley Davidson Sportster 48, which was fun and tourquey but kind of heavy and not as comfortable as I expected (Harley = cruiser = comfortable so I thought). I then made the decision (mistake?) of test riding a Triumph Trident 660, and holy crap that was so much fun, I need it in my life lol even though I can’t afford it.

I also had an unexpected “adventure” getting stuck in the mud recently when trying to go off the beaten path. Dual sports have way too high seat heights for me but maybe I should get an ADV bike?

God help me the day I try a supersport bike. Make sure I don’t submit to squid-dom…

SheDiceToday,

Lol, fast is nice, but my favorite bikes are smaller. My 125 scooter is my current favorite if I don’t need to go above 50mph, and I sorely miss my ninja400. As for the comfortable issue with cruisers, it’s supposedly an issue because of the leaned back, pressure-on-tailbone seating position. Neutral (upright) seems to be the most comfortable for the majority, and you know what’s king of those right now? ADVs ;) They’re basically the luxury bikes right now, with all the fancy electronics on the newer models, lots of suspension, and fast enough to do anything highway/street. Your goldwing types might technically be plushier, but ADVs are popular for a reason.

I have a supersport-lite: an older sport tourer with waaaay too big of an engine for what I want to do with it, but unless you find yourself acting silly now, you won’t have much to worry about. The occasional urge to catch that stupid muscle car blowing past with an exhaust tuned to sound loud passes you by just as quickly as you pass them by…

SuperSpruce,

The uncomfortable part about the Sportster was actually how unexpectedly aggressive the riding position was. I expected laid-back similar to my GZ250 which is also a cruiser.

I am starting to think of ADVs as the SUVs of motorcycles. Usually, big, tall, off-road capable, comfortable, not particularly sporty, expensive, and trendy.

At the moment I am extremely budget-conscious so I’ll be sticking with my 250 unless I find a smoking deal for another motorcycle. Currently I’m a college student that doesn’t really need a motorcycle, but I really wanted one. Where I will be able to get a nice motorcycle is if I can spend my future car budget on a motorcycle instead…

DLSantini, in Those of you who work 8+ hours outside in the cold regularly, how do you dress for the job?

Pair of jeans, a T-shirt, and maybe put on a hoodie halfway through.
