ChaoticNeutralCzech, (edited ) in Did the pope vote in Argentina's election?

Argentina is the country whose citizenship you cannot legally lose (though dual citizenship is permitted), and they have mandatory* voting. So the Pope is still a citizen of Argentina and did vote or faced charges. I don’t think they allow exceptions.

  • Edit: Not quite true. See replies.
bayta,

It is possible to vote while outside the country by going to designated embassies but if you live outside of the country or are further away than 500km from your legal residence the day of the vote you are not obligated to vote. Also, a lot of people (above 20% on the last election) that should vote don’t despite it being mandatory since that law is pretty much never enforced in practice. Source: I’m Argentinean.

Nibodhika,

Correction, voting is mandatory only for people who live in Argentina, if you live on another country voting is optional. Source: I’m an Argentinian who lives in another country.

WarmSoda,

But are you the Pope?

Oh shit. Are you?

Zagorath,
@Zagorath@aussie.zone avatar

I do know for a fact that the Pope has someone working at the Vatican who is precisely the kind of nerd that might be on this site. The Pope himself…probably not.

BigDanishGuy,

I’ve got this.

OP, how do you feel about defecating in an arboreal setting?

intensely_human,

I’m for it

BigDanishGuy,

Welcome to the big ARE YOU ACTUALLY THE POPE quiz!

  1. Are you an Argentinian living abroad?
  2. Do you regularly wear weird head gear?
  3. When visiting a new city. Does your Uber have a large glass cage instead of a rear compartment?
  4. Do strangers keep asking you to hold their children?
  5. Do you have a strange urge to poop when you are near forests?

If you can answer yes to all of the above, you should find the nearest cardinal and observe how you are addressed.

intensely_human,

He’s just tweeting at me. What does it mean??

cashews_best_nut,

Falklands.

LegionEris,

This is fascinating. Assuming he follows the law of the land per the Bible (per my minimal understanding of the Bible…) he would be sinning to note vote. So the pope most likely voted by absentee ballot in Argentina, but also likely has diplomatic immunity in Argentina, and therefore could not be prosecuted for failure to vote.

ChaoticNeutralCzech,

I don’t think you are eligible for diplomatic immunity if you are a citizen. He might choose not to extradite himself but he plans a visit in 2024.

I think he either voted for Sérgio Massa, whom he supported publicly, or symbolically cast a blank ballot. The other options are to declare that he was ill or 500 km from the nearest polling place, or pay a 50-500 peso fine. None of these are off-limits for somebody with a good diplomatic position and a large amount of staff.

Nibodhika,

He can also just not vote, he’s an Argentinian living in another country (just like me) so voting is optional for him.

DasRundeEtwas,

Iven if he can’t get true diplomatic immunity, I don’t think Argentina would trouble a foreign monarch over a 500 peso fine, even if he came back into the country.

ChaoticNeutralCzech,

Yes. I just listed the legal options I found. The law and its enforcement are different things: most domestic non-voters are not punished either, and they are likely going to let him pass even without a formal excuse; it would harm their reputation to be that petty.

probablyaCat,

Not even just a foreign monarch. The pope. In a country with a lot of Catholics. Imagine them trying to arrest the pope. Likely even the police and military would revolt. But you did give me a great idea for an ai image prompt!

cashews_best_nut,

Have you ever been caught by Czech Hunter?

ChaoticNeutralCzech, (edited )

No, I’m too ugly. AI says I look like this and I’m not much prettier IRL. But the number of fake (hidden fee) taxis, Fake Taxis and fake Fake Taxis is larger than the number of honest taxis.

BigDanishGuy,

500 peso fine? How will he ever be able to pay that? /s

According to google 500 argentine peso is 1.43USD

ChaoticNeutralCzech,

The law is apparently old and not enforced. The other consequence is that offenders cannot run for office for 3 years but I doubt they check every municipal candidate. I imagune it could turn up as a minor affair, though.

intensely_human,

That’s amazing

That’s mostly it.

Extrasvhx9he,

Same, all you really need. Maybe also password manager extensions for the added phishing protection

coffinwood,

Yeah, I didn’t include my Enpass extension, as it’s more like a plug-in.

I also excluded TamperMonkey because I solely use it to sell my Steam cards and become filthy rich. Already 34 cents into my first million.

And last but not least: an extension that auto-upvotes YT videos from my subscribed channels because I’m too lazy to do it manually and YT can’t be bothered to assign a key to it.

datavoid,

In my testing, dark reader made sites load much slower. Anyone else notice this?

AphoticDev,

HawlSera, in What are some companies that deserve to be boycotted to death?

I do not buy from bp, and I only buy from Walmart if there’s literally no other option. My go to department store is Target or whatever local store has what I need, usually it is the former is Walmart is the reason why Mom and Pop stores don’t really exist anymore unless they fulfill a very specific niche.

My local Walmart does not get any of my business, if I go in, it’s probably just to visit the Checkers renting store space from Walmart

lud,

What is “BP”? I’m assuming you don’t mean British Petroleum.

Daeraxa,

“British petroleum” hasn’t been a thing for over two decades. …

lud,

I just used the old name because I wanted to clarify what I thought they meant by BP.

I thought that was kinda obvious.

Marin_Rider,

ah, BP still around here and probably one of the “big 3” petrol stations. unless you mean the name itself, in which case what does BP stand for now?

HawlSera,

What other BP would I be talking about? What other BP regularly dumps shit into the ocean

lud,

I don’t know.

I couldn’t see how Walmart and BP were connected and I didn’t expect you to bring up two unrelated companies like that.

HawlSera,

I never said they were connected, I just said that I was boycotting both of them

QuodamoresDei,

Amazon is the mom ans pop shop killer after from 2020 on.

HawlSera,

Doesn’t suddenly make Walmart innocent, plus unlike walmart, Amazon can actually be helpful to a small community that doesn’t have specialty shops. That said I recommend not using Amazon if what you are looking for can be found on a different site, actually I recommend using Amazon to browse products, and then finding another site to buy the product. I make sure to almost never buy computer parts from amazon, because there was one time I bought a motherboard from Amazon thinking it was a reputable dealer, instead it fried out and my protection plan was fucking worthless because I actually bought it from a bootlegger who filed off the serial number of the motherboard he copied. I was able to still make it out, but tech support told me what actually happened when I came to me number.

So I buy from Newegg unless the Amazon price is just that much better.

Pasta4u, in No politics inteded: Why isn't Trump after leaving office in any way or shape involved in politics say as member of congress or senate?

I’d be amazed if he could actually do it without Jill’s help

Susaga, in No politics inteded: Why isn't Trump after leaving office in any way or shape involved in politics say as member of congress or senate?
@Susaga@ttrpg.network avatar

You can’t say “no politics intended” and then directly discuss politics. The answer will invariably include politics.

Trump didn’t want to be a politician. He wanted to be president. Being a senator or congressman is a job, but being president is a mark of prestige. If he can become president again, he will, because it makes him look good. There’s no point for him in taking a lower position with less power.

Hegar,

Are you looking at this picture, reading this post and then attempting to seriously debate the author on the merits of their argument of no-politics "inteded"?

BigBlackCockroach,
@BigBlackCockroach@lemmy.world avatar

You are right, but what I meant was, that I didn’t ask from a political point of view, just wanted to understand from a technical point of view. Like I understand that once you have been president you retire. But trump didnt retire. So since he is continuing on, why in the meantime isn’t he in congress or senate?

I thought obama, bush, clinton are just not in senate or congress because they were president, following the unwritten rule.

So since trump didnt retire why isnt he in congress or the senate. I think he would have gotten a vote in florida or other such states.

yeah but what you say makes sense, so it is just to do with trumps personality profile…

Lemmylaugh,

All excellent points except he has a real dire agenda if he is president again and it’s not just to make him look good.

logicbomb,

When people say “no pun intended,” it is always right after they’ve made a completely intentional pun.

When a person says “no offense [intended], but,” it is always right before they say something intentionally offensive.

What I’m saying is that maybe this grammar “no X intended” doesn’t actually mean that literally they don’t intend X, but instead that they want to lessen their culpability for exactly intending X.

Ghostery hasn’t been mentioned - it has a feature to auto-decline cookies. The popup shows up, but you just wait half a sec and everything has been auto declined.

Nyfure,

Wasnt ghostery bought some time ago and added trackers to the extension?
Consent-O-Matic can also deny cookies

papabobolious,

More than I know I got it just for denying those popups. I guess I’ll look into the other one because it has been a game changer.

mdk_, (edited ) in hey - trying to switch from Chrome to Firefox, what are your recommended extensions and/or quality of life addins, etc?

This is a switch I made yesterday, but instead of Chrome to Firefox, I switched from Vivaldi (Chrome, but kinda like old Opera) to Floorp (japanese fork of Firefox with focus on privacy and sane defaults).

I got Sponsorblock for YouTube, uBlock Origin for ads and Gesturify for those awesome mouse gestures (my main reason for using an Opera-like).

Sometimes, I use Tampermonkey for misc Scripts on different Pages, so I installed that aswell. But for now, no scripts for Tampermonkey, as I primarily focus on setting it up to be more like Vivaldi.

Other addons are Ghostery for more privacy and Session Buddy to prevent oopsies when playing around with Tabs and windows.

Floorp even has dark mode for bright pages already included in the box.

stolid_agnostic, in Did the pope vote in Argentina's election?

Pope is technically head of state or another country so it is probably bad to vote in any election just from the perspective of looks. The pope should be above politics.

Fair.

JoMiran, in Dear Lemmings, what is your personal approach to human diet?
@JoMiran@lemmy.ml avatar

Whole food plant based diet. I also try to limit the amount of carb intake to maintain a healthy mix. Some people go WFPB and end up eating mostly bread and pasta which isn’t great. I also try to go zero SOS (salt, oil, sugar).

BigBlackCockroach,
@BigBlackCockroach@lemmy.world avatar

Do you ever miss salt?

JoMiran,
@JoMiran@lemmy.ml avatar

I never liked salt, so I didn’t really miss it. No salt doesn’t mean no seasoning. In fact, I season my food far more now than I did before. Leaning on salt for seasoning leaves a lot of complex flavors out of recipes.

Valmond,

Why salt, and Oil of all rhings?

I mean fat is good for us.

The exception is of course if there is an underlying medical problem (high blood pressure, overweight, …).

JoMiran,
@JoMiran@lemmy.ml avatar

Fat good. Oil bad. Oil is a highly concentrated extract that we aren’t very capable of processing. If I want fat, I’ll eat olives, nuts, avocado, etc. I can stuff myself with food for the same amount of fat and calories as two tablespoons of oil.

Valmond,

Virgin Extra Olive Oil of course.

No processed crap neither.

JoMiran,
@JoMiran@lemmy.ml avatar

All oil follows the same concept. It’s fat concentrated in pure form. If you’re starving, and I mean literally starving, then oil will save your life. Most of us aren’t starving so that extra concentrated punch of fat and calories is not only unnecessary, it is unhealthy.

matter,

Nobody just drinks oil by itself. We typically combine it with foods with very little fat, e.g. as salad dressing. Oil adds flavour, increases satiety and doesn’t spike blood sugar. It is a perfectly fine ingredient.

matter,

There is absolutely no evidence that we “aren’t very capable of processing” oil. Eating whole foods is good. Oil is fine.

JoMiran,
@JoMiran@lemmy.ml avatar

If you consume oil then you are not following a whole food diet. Oil is a processed or refined ingredient, therefore not a whole food. Obviously, you (as in you personally) can eat whatever you please, but I choose to follow a WFPB diet as intended and that includes no refined ingredients like salt, sugar and pressed pills, or processed ingredients like vegetable oils and such.

matter, (edited )

That’s got very little to do with my comment. Obviously, you (as in you personally) can eat whatever you please, but if you make biological claims about it you ought to back them up with evidence.

What does “as intended” mean? You mention bread and pasta in an earlier comment; do you understand that flour is also a processed ingredient? And that baking is a means of processing food? Oil can be as simple as just being squeezed out of whole seeds or fruit, that’s no more processing than grinding, cooking, or peeling something.

JoMiran,
@JoMiran@lemmy.ml avatar

Flour (which I avoid) is not processed, it is ground just like nut butters (which I also avoid) are not processed. High quality olive oil comes from squeezed olives, which makes it refined. The problem with refined oils is it’s unatural concentration, which I’ve already covered. Vegetable oils and such are 100% processed.

As for backup you can read all about it from the experts instead of some random guy on the Internet. I recommend Dr. Caldwell B. Esselstyn and Dr. Michael Greger.
