Comcast (Xfinity) We couldn’t get a good signal in our house and were told the cable was old and needed to be upgraded. They wouldn’t cover the upgrade. A local fiber optic company came through and we dumped them.

ShittyBeatlesFCPres,

I was the first person I knew who cut the cord because Comcast was so obnoxious. They made a deal with my landlord so we could only use Comcast and then they charged $30 more a month than the apartment complex across the way. The FCC (or whichever regulator it was) made that illegal at some point. But competitors slow-walked competing for years. I’m sure it was a backroom deal since AT&T had similar deals with other buildings.

I still needed internet so I angrily paid for that but I sailed the high seas for years just to avoid giving Comcast one extra nickel more than was necessary.

You just dunk the hard drives in some bleach. All the bytes will be wiped away.

0x4E4F, in Is CCleaner still people's preferred computer cleaning app?

Haven’t tried BleachBit on Windows. Does it clean driver installation logs, compress browser databases, MRU explorer cache, opd prefetch files, Windows updates, etc.?

Pyr_Pressure, in What companies have made your blacklist?

My top company that I will never give another dollar to is Adobe, as they forced me into a 1 year “contract” with a $200 cancellation fee after forgetting to cancel their one month discounted trial in time.

Other companies for myself include Dell, HP, and Canadian Tire.

FIST_FILLET,

the adobe cancellation fee is the most evil and greedy shit i’ve ever witnessed in software. they SCALE it so you pay the exact amount you would have paid if you just remained subscribed for the full year, except when you pay that money through a cancellation you immediately lose your license to run their software. they literally make you pay the remaining subscription period while taking away your access to the fucking product

surewhynotlem,

Obligatory “fuck Adobe”. My proudest moment last year was cutting our company’s Acrobat licenses by 70% and taking about a million bucks out of their greedy little pockets.

Nitro Pro is great anyway. It does the job.

Pyr_Pressure,

I love you. Best I could do was cancel my $20 / month. I’ll match you in about 4000 years.

slazer2au,

It’s not about matching, it’s about preventing Adobe from getting money. :P

otter,

What are some good alternatives to each Adobe product?

Someone on here mentioned Affinity for the Photoshop/design world

Nitro & PDFxchange for the PDF side?

Pyr_Pressure,

I switched to PDFgear for my PDF editing needs, free and open source.

Does a decent job, although I miss being able to have PDF opened in tabs instead of individual windows.

7Sea_Sailor,

Am I crazy? I cannot find that open source for PDFgear. Yes it’s free, but they need to have some income if they can offer an AI integration. What’s the catch?

surewhynotlem,

Nitro is shaping up to be a good alternative for enterprise needs. Not sure about the rest. They seem to have a strangle hold on the creative suite in the enterprise.

What happened at Canadian tire? :o

Pyr_Pressure,

Oh man it was so long ago.

I think the final straw was trying to buy tire rims. Went online and it says it was in stock and my local store, went to it and they said it was out of stock despite the website saying it was. Sent me to the next store over 20 minutes away saying they had some, went there and they told me that they didn’t have any either despite the internal system saying they did.

Wasted an hour and a bunch of gas trying to get those rims. Not a huge deal but if a company can’t tell what they have and when they have it and prefer to waste my time I don’t care to give them my business.

Plus they only stock like 3 items per store for every flyer deal, hoping you’ll buy shit just because you’re there already. Same with Walmart which is also on my blacklist.

davidisgreat,

I used to work at a company that provided tech support for a few Canadian Tires. They don’t hire nearly enough staff. They try to make up for it with high amounts of automation. Frequently people will come and steal from them because there aren’t enough staff to stop that. This causes the inventory system to think there is more stock than there is. Because the reduced staff, they don’t frequently manually check their stock so it can be quite some time before it becomes aparent.

MigratingtoLemmy,

I will pirate Adobe’s products without any lapse in judgement on my part, I assure you

_danny,

If you complain enough, adobe will let you cancel for free. But they are also on my blacklist, for making me work to cancel a service for free. Absolutely ridiculous.

SkaveRat, in What companies have made your blacklist?

McD.

20 or so years ago I had several bad experiences back to back in different restaurants, and I just decided to not go there anymore.

And EA. Fuck them

Pyr_Pressure,

Also EA, you’re right. Fuck em.

Pyr_Pressure,

That’s a good one, it’s made my grey list so far and I will only go there on my company’s dollar if it’s the only option…

It seems that every time I go, unless it’s just for a coffee, they either get my order wrong or they need me to park in the lot for 10 minutes while they get it ready.

Last time they gave me an extra McMuffin and charged me for it, despite only ordering the one.

balderdash9, in Is CCleaner still people's preferred computer cleaning app?

This is a fucking public service announcement

Steve, in Is CCleaner still people's preferred computer cleaning app?

No, it starts up and pesters you even if you disable it as a startup service. Malware.

intensely_human, in Lesbians of lemmy, how do you introduce your SO to other people without getting them confused for just a friend?

“This person is my lover Karen”

Just introduce them as your partner. Lesbians are so habitually entrenched in hiding their sexuality.

I have so many pairs of “friends” come in appliance shopping. Gay men come in, it’s “This is my husband Mike”. Gay women come in and it’s like “This is my friend Paula. She helps me pick out appliances and definitely doesn’t live with me”.

I don’t pry, because I’m just selling appliances. But it’s pretty obvious.

  • Paradachshund,

Awesome thanks! You’re the third vote I’ve seen for bleachbit so I’ll definitely look into that one.

    sirfancy,

Can you elaborate on how it’s a virus? I hear this a lot but haven’t heard any substantial truth aside from referring to a privacy policy that is identical to 90% of every other website anyone else uses.

    RedEyeFlightControl,
    @RedEyeFlightControl@lemmy.world avatar

Piriform was a very trustworthy tool developer until it was surreptitiously bought by a chinese company and immediately turned into a virus for the next release. It instantly lost its trust and has been garbage since that day.

    Avast isn’t a Chinese company

    ridethisbike, (edited )

Article about it for those interested… According to this it does not still contain malware, but it has been the target of multiple attacks through the years that has in turn compromised many PC’s. The attack mentioned in this article was suspected to be a state sponsored attack by China, not sure about the others.

    usa.kaspersky.com/…/ccleaner-malware

    Lemminary,

Look at that, very different from “it’s a vahrus!!1!”

supernicepojo, in Is CCleaner still people's preferred computer cleaning app?

Ccleaner has been a malware for at least 5 years.

What do each of those do?

notexecutive, in Is CCleaner still people's preferred computer cleaning app?

do not use it. it’s bad.

kakes, in Is CCleaner still people's preferred computer cleaning app?

Honestly I just run WinDirStat and do it manually.

    vodkasolution,

    It’s treesize for me

    BarrierWithAshes,

    This but wiztree instead.

    NoneYa,

I did the same because having it be portable is so much better especially when you’re dealing with a system that has no space available to install.

    monsterpiece42,

Spacesniffer for me. Also portable. But I’ll check out wiztree for funzies.

    Davel23,

    This but SpaceSniffer instead.

    lastweakness,

    May I ask why?

    Davel23,

I suppose it's mostly personal preference, but I find SpaceSniffer's display to be a lot more intuitive.

    Paradachshund,

I think that’s also in my future, but I liked ccleaner for cleaning up old bits of uninstalled things that didn’t remove themselves cleanly.

    otter,

Revo for that, but in the moment instead of an afterthought 🤓

    @yukichigai@kbin.social avatar

Yeah, just grabbed it and gave it a try. Took under 4 seconds to scan the same drive that WinDirStat took a full 3 minutes to scan.

    kakes,

Thanks for the heads up, I’ll give it a shot next time!

    srecko,

    Spacesniffer is my preferred alternative.

    bunkyprewster,

    Kind of an unsettling name

    RagingSnarkasm,

    No kink shaming.

sanataseva, in Is CCleaner still people's preferred computer cleaning app?

Absolutely not. It was sold to a third party with nebulous privacy policy among other annoyances. Get you some Bleachbit.

    Paradachshund,

Awesome I’ll look into that one. Thanks!

    penquin,

Be very careful with Bleachbit, it’s very powerful and can ruin your system if you go too far cleaning. Ask me how I know 😂

    AlolanYoda, (edited )

    How do you know?

More specificly, how did you break your system? What did you do? Did you “clean” your partition table or something?

    CorrodedCranium,
    @CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

Not that person but I tried to do the secure cleaning mode where it zeros empty space but I think I was also downloading something at the same time. This was several years ago but I vaguely recall my system being unable to boot.

    penquin,

Let’s say, I checked too many boxes and messed with the root directory. Anything that shows as “slow” is dangerous

    Swedneck,
    @Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

root directory? why are you running bleachbit on linux??

    LostXOR,

Probably for the same reason someone would run it on Windows. It has both a Windows and Linux version.

    penquin,

Why? To clean up left overs? You think Linux doesn’t have that and is just all pink and unicorns? lol

    Paradachshund,

Is there a way to turn on dummy mode?

    penquin,

I haven’t used it in a long time, but I know that it has two versions, one root and the other is regular (that’s on Linux, not sure about Windows). Also don’t check those boxes that say something like “slow” or something like that. That’s just my experience. I’m pretty sure if you read up on it or watch a couple of YouTube videos you’ll figure it out.

    QuikxSpec,

Make a backup instance on an external drive

    SharkAttak,
    @SharkAttak@kbin.social avatar

Oh joy. Must also be why they don't have portable versions anymore.
