Bluetreefrog, in What are your thoughts on the concept of having faith in a Higher Power but choosing to distance oneself from established religious doctrines?

OP, please reword your title to comply with Rule 2.

Why not just go to sources that don't have a real leaning? OK, they are hard to find, but they still do exist. Try the BBC for an English-speaking source, or ARD and ZDF in German.

Ejh3k, in Gifts for young kids who are really into airplanes?

See if you have a small, local air field that you can get him a flight in a Cessna.

EssentialNPC, in Gifts for young kids who are really into airplanes?

Has the child flown on a commercial airline, yet? My son loved having a Southwest branded toy airplane - realistic looking one - after he had flown on that carrier. It let him relive his flight and expand on it in his imagination.

I don’t know if the Air & Space Museum has an online gift shop, but they have stuff for all ages. Even if you’re not close to the ones in DC, they have storage hangars all over that they open to the public. Keep an eye out for that.

CBC is pretty good at covering most topics that are relevant to me.

___, in Excluding the obvious ones such as politics, what topics can't you stand listening to people talk about?

Lately, just about everything.

Cocodapuf, (edited ) in What are your thoughts on the concept of having faith in a Higher Power but choosing to distance oneself from established religious doctrines?

A higher power without religion

Yeah, that sounds fine to me. I think the movie Dogma spells that position out pretty well: organized beliefs lead to all kinds of messy stuff, it’s better to just have ideas.

And personally I think humans seem to be wired to want religion. I think it stems from how we’re social creatures and we just desperately want to be part of something. And some of the most pervading religions have been the ones that include a father figure in their belief structure; I don’t think that’s a coincidence either, I think nearly everyone wants someone to follow, someone to tell them what to do, and parents don’t last forever.

All that is to say, religion or at least spirituality seems to be something people naturally yearn for. And given that, there’s no shame in feeling that yearning.

jedi,

Thanks for your insight

MycoBro, in Have you ever come across some sort of container or organizer for anything that ended up being strangely useful?

I bought two pieces of the new Milwaukee Packout tool box/organizer shit. Super expensive. Was a bit turned off at the price but I wanted something that stacked. After a series of mistakes the entire thing flew out my trailer and landed in the interstate going 70+ mph. Mother fucker didn’t dint or come open or anything. Barely a scratch. It didn’t even unstack. I spent $300 dollars on a few more pieces and it’s been wonderful.

tyrant, in Where do you get affordable scented candles?

Not candles but have you thought about a diffuser with aromatherapy oils?

Bearigator, (edited )

I’ve experienced that at a friend’s house and I don’t prefer it over just using our existing wax burner, if we are going to do something flameless. They were very pleasant smelling though!

Kallioapina, in What's a sci-fi or fantasy book or series that you want to see adapted as a movie/television series?
@Kallioapina@lemmy.world avatar

Philip Jose Farmer’s Riverworld series could be a fun series/world to adapt to a series, but also infuriating if they cut it short after two seasons.

Typically a hole on the middle means your candle isn’t used long enough. Are you using them less than 2 hours?

Bearigator, (edited )

Honestly, we normally burn them for ~6-7 hours at a time when we light them. We both work from home and I’ll usually light it up the first time I get up from the computer. It doesn’t happen with nicer candles, but some of the cheaper 1 wick ones we get from Walmart or Aldi will tunnel like that even with the long burns.

Hereforpron2, in Where do you get affordable scented candles?

You can buy some pre-waxed wicks and melt the remainder of tunneled candles to make smaller ones with the leftover wax.

Also, check out Etsy, many more price points available on there than I see in stores.
