PizzasDontWearCapes, in What do you like about the vehicle you drive and would you have changed anythin about it?

Mk7 GTI. Great handling and enough power to be fun. Also quite practical.

I just changed the one thing that really bothered me by disabling the soundaktor that pumped buzzy “engine” noises into the cabin

I’d like to also reduce the turbo lag, but it’s livable

MD756, in What do you like about the vehicle you drive and would you have changed anythin about it?

I bought a 2020 Honda Accord, and I have absolutely zero (meaningful) complaints.

Things I like about it so much that they are requirements for future car purchases:

  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Brake-holding
  • Tactile inputs for media, cruise control, or climate control (almost wasn’t going to mention this, but new cars are shifting away from this, which I can’t stand)
  • A respectably-snappy infotainment system that supports CarPlay

Little things:

  • Adaptive cruise control is always ready to be set, so I can just head out and immediately start using it (I’m one of those people who likes to use cruise control at every possible opportunity)
  • Comfortably seats 4, if I ever need it to
  • It just looks nice, inside and out, in my opinion
moistclump,

Ooh. What’s brake holding?

Tujio,

I think they’re referring to Hill Assist. In manual cars if you let your foot off the brake you start to roll down hill. This is dangerous if you’re parked or stopped facing uphill with another car close behind you.

For generations, this was a problem that people had to deal with, and it took some skill. About 15ish years ago manufacturers started putting a feature on that would automatically hold the brakes until your foot hit the gas.

Bytemeister,

Brake hold is a feature where when you are stopped and in drive, the car will hold the brake until you hit the accelerator. The idea is that in stop and go traffic, or at a red light, you can stop the car and then remove your foot from the brake and the car will hold it’s position rather than creep forward.

dontkickducks, in What's the most unique role model you've heard that was a green flag?

Jack Black. Inspires people to do what they love. Really knows how to gave fun and doesn’t care if people think it’s weird. And despite a lot of banal poop, penis, sex humour in the Tenacious D songs, they changed some lyrics in live shows to swap genders. Great example of nonchelant emancipation and equality.

In a similar vein, 2000 Ford falcon

Cons: runs too well, in fact it doesn’t turn off.

phanpy.social for having an actual human readable view with nested threads. PWA, great on mobile and desktop.

This is what I use. Its open source. Loads faster than any other app ive tried. And best of all it also has really convenient features like putting reposts in a carousel, adding different slight color highlights to the background of posts depending on whether its a repost, reply or normal post. Also it has a thread counter like 2/5 so you know if a post is a part of a thread.

I use elk.zone on desktop because I’m used to Twitter.

On Android, I like Moshidon the best. I tried elk as a PWA and it just wasn’t great. Tusky was good, but I like Moshidon’s interface better.

ADHDefy, in What are your favorite names?
@ADHDefy@kbin.social avatar

I love most names. I know that sounds stupid, but I have a weird fascination with names. I love meeting people with names I haven't heard before, it makes me really happy. I also love to introduce my friends to people with fake names, like I might introduce two people to each other as Telemachus Entwhistle and Victoria Saint Watercress, then walk away and let them figure out their real names. Sometimes I use people's full names in fake anger, but make up a middle name, like Aloysius or Jezebel, or make up a name that their already full first name might be short for.

One of my favorite jokes in all of TV is the running gag on Psych where the main character introduces his friend and partner, Gus, by a different name in every episode, like Lavender Gumes or Galileo Humpkins.I really don't know why I find it so amusing, but I love it.

I think some of my actual favorite names, like ones I might really name a kid, would be like Ruth, Miles, Olivia, Matthew, James, Joe, Sorrel, Elan, Evan, Lyric, Bear, Atticus, and Cynthia.

clay_pidgin,

That running gag is one of the best parts of a great show. Especially when Gus just goes along with it.

Duncan Idaho from Dune. Wouldn’t be surprised if it was originally a name Frank Herbert used on a fake ID

jasondj,

Funny story, specifically on the name “Idaho”, from Wikipedia’s article on the state, “Etymology” Section:

The name’s origin remains a mystery.[9] In the early 1860s, when the U.S. Congress was considering organizing a new territory in the Rocky Mountains, the name “Idaho” was suggested by George M. Willing, a politician posing as an unrecognized delegate from the unofficial Jefferson Territory.[10] Willing claimed that the name was derived from a Shoshone term meaning “the sun comes from the mountains” or “gem of the mountains”,[11] but it was revealed later that there was no such term and Willing claimed that he had been inspired to coin the name when he met a little girl named Ida.[12] Since the name appeared to be fabricated, the U.S. Congress ultimately decided to name the area Colorado Territory instead when it was created in February 1861, but by the time this decision was made, the town of Idaho Springs, Colorado had already been named after Willing’s proposal.

The same year Congress created Colorado Territory, a county called Idaho County was created in eastern Washington Territory. The county was named after a steamship named Idaho, which was launched on the Columbia River in 1860. It is unclear whether the steamship was named before or after Willing’s claim was revealed. Regardless, part of Washington Territory, including Idaho County, was used to create Idaho Territory in 1863.[13] Idaho Territory would later change its boundaries to the area that became the U.S. state.[14]

FooBarrington,

[…] but it was revealed later that there was no such term and Willing claimed that he had been inspired to coin the name when he met a little girl named Ida.

Imagine pissing a politician off so hard he tries to name a state after your name plus “hoe”

theonyltruemupf, in How do you spend your idle time?

I bought a Steam Deck 1 1/2 years ago and most of my idle time is now spent playing all the games I never had time or energy for. It’s amazing if you’re into video games.

pete_the_cat,

I did something similar and got a USB C expansion controller for my Galaxy S23. Find a few good mobile games and add in RetroArch and other emulators with a bunch of ROMs and you have yourself a mobile gaming rig!

effakcuL, in How do you spend your idle time?

I have so much Idle time during my commute, that I picked up duolingo to learn spanish. If that is too much I tend to just listen to audiobooks/a d&d podcast

Littleleeroy,

That’s the same route I took. I hate Duolingo but used Memrise to improve my vocab for Italian. Needed something to do besides scroll aimlessly.
