kaffiene, in What's a food you love, that isn't worth making from scratch?

Crepes? Jesus, they’re one of the easiest things you can cook. Anyway, to answer your question: croissants! I’ve made them from scratch before and it definitely wasn’t worth it. Took half a day and weren’t a patch on the real thing

victorz,

Even I can make crepes lol. Have one of those small pans. Make the batter, open the butter, get cracking.

Knock_Knock_Lemmy_In,

Let the batter sit for 30 mins in the fridge

victorz,

Included in “make the batter” but yep, important step not to be forgotten 👌

Rednax,

Do you means from absolute scratch? Here in the Netherlands it is common to buy a can of pre-made dough for croissants. You have to roll and bake them yourself, and adding some egg is also a great idea. But it is technically not entirely from scratch.

They taste way better than the pre-baked ones that you have to re-heat. Absolutely worth the minimal effort.

june,

What you describe is not making from scratch at all. Those are premade save the final couple of steps, no different than a frozen pizza from the grocery store. No one gets a frozen pizza and says they made it from scratch.

Auriel,

What do you mean re-heat? Are you heating the ones from the bakery before you eat them? Are they not eaten cold in the Netherlands?

ericbomb,

I have a mental block against making things one by one that have like 20 calories in them.

Brain says small things bad unless can make a million at a time.

And yeah screw making those things from scratch.

Strawberry, (edited )

yeah it is annoying when using a small pan/stove as opposed to a giant griddle where one crepe is actually a lot

Elderos, (edited )

A crepe is like 100 calories and you can pour like 5 in less than 10 minutes. But anyway, to reach their own. personally I hate chopping stuff even if it takes 1 minute.

Chobbes,

I was surprised by this too! I mean I can understand thinking that crepes will be hard because they’re pretty dainty and might be delicate, but they’re surprisingly easy to do.

gwildors_gill_slits, in What's your automatic vacuum's name?
AnExerciseInFalling, (edited ) in What's a food you love, that isn't worth making from scratch?

Gyoza/potstickers/dumplings

I will inhale plates of em and the time it takes to wrap em made me both appreciate the food more and appreciate the premade ones so much more

jol,

In the same line, gnocchi.

The biggest for me is not a person but a group. The people who settled the islands of the pacific.

Meeshall65,

James Watt, for investing steampower. Destroyed the balance of the world

ShittyBeatlesFCPres,

I always wonder how close to South America they actually made it. I went to the Galapagos a couple of years ago and there’s no evidence of human settlement there dating back that far. But Easter Island is not that far west in terms of longitude.

It just doesn’t seem like human nature to get all the way to Easter Island and then stop. Maybe something happened and the entire society was like, “I’m never getting in a fucking boat again.” But if I had to bet, I’d put my money on people reaching the mainland and just not succeeding and creating a permanent presence. Why would Easter Island be the last stop?

UPGRAYEDD, in So, who or what ruined Christmas this year?

In order of worst to bad…

My cat of 14 years had to be put down, my parents gifted my sister nearly a half million dollars with the reasoning that she needs it more (with the " dont worry, we will even it out later"), my wifes mom semi disowned her ( not sure exactly what this situation is) and wifes dad is playing favorites with step kids.

ichbinjasokreativ,

What the fuck

BonesOfTheMoon,

Well fuck your parents, and I’m sorry about your kitty.

AtariDump,

Well fuck your parents

From Alabama?

13esq,

If it makes you feel better, I’m not expecting half a million of free money at any point!

Sorry about your cat.

reddit permabanned me for mass reporting very obvious spam bots, as i was “abusing the report feature”, then ignored the appeal (which i’m sure went straight in the trash anyway). 9 year old 500k karma account, and a huge content generator for their money farm, down the drain.

i was already done with the site but mostly stuck around for some of the community content I still cared about. it was obvious they PREFER spam bots over real users, as long as they generate traffic and ad revenue. money over all, they’ve always transparently been that way. and the third party app ban was just the icing on the cake. They give no craps about any kind of censorship unless it censors the voices that might get between them and IPO money.

fuck 'em, fuck spez and his blue-eyed golden boy affluenza-afflicted pedo ass. they can have their spambots in their nice little walled garden. i’m having a lot more fun over here anyway.

edit: and in case a LW mod considers this “uncivil”, my last statement is factual, not an attack. it is an open secret that spez first modded, and then explicitly allowed the continued existence of /r/jailbait for many years (quick google); he is also so self-centered via his golden-boy affluenza complex that he thinks he will be a slave owner in the coming apocalypse.

BigBrainBrett2517,

Spittin’ truth bombs! Hear, hear!

belty,

Genuinely curious how the spam bot situation is on lemmy. Is there any personal experiences or better yet data?

justlookingfordragon,
@justlookingfordragon@lemmy.world avatar

I have seen three rather obvious spam bots so far, all of which were almost instantly downvoted into oblivion and soon thereafter removed from the site. Granted, I mainly frequent niche videogame communities so I can’t say anything about the spam/bot situation in bigger communities (like politcal stuff etc.) but for the part of the Fediverse I personally use, it is definitely an upgrade compared to the current situation of reddit.

empireOfLove2,
@empireOfLove2@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

My personal experience so far is that the Lemmy community is significantly more responsive in getting rid of spam bots. I’ve definitely seen a few but they disappear in less than a day, and lately the amount of spam has been extremely minimal, almost nonexistent on my instance’s all page. Compare to Reddit, where spam bots might get banned from a few subs immediately but would often take weeks to get sitebanned, if ever.

Most serious Lemmy instances require user approval to join via the short application, which means they have no bots at all. And the big key is that lemmy admins are quite active and talk amongst themselves; if an instance with open no-approval signups gets abused by bots, other admins will talk to that instance about it, and most of the time it seems to get fixed pretty quick. And if they don’t… well, you defed them until they do. It’s pretty pog.

It’s one of the better -isms currently available.

Workers owning the means of production is the way it should be. Until we can mature further.

I probably would have been here sooner had I known about it prior, but I came here because Reddit did a fucky-wucky and now the good apps don’t work. Though I had been getting sick of how many people were just awful there anyway and the only other place I had known about was Tumblr, which isn’t very condusive to conversation. When the announcement of the API shit happened, Lemmy kept getting mentioned (along with other sites) and it was the closest thing to Reddit that wasn’t Reddit.

It not being owned by a single entity is just a happy little bonus.

BigBrainBrett2517,

Hear, hear & Bravo!

aesthelete, in So, who or what ruined Christmas this year?

The NFL. Really? Two games on Christmas? Multiple games on Christmas Eve? Go fuck yourselves.

wheeldawg,

I mean you can just say NFL in general. Ruins a good chunk of the year hearing about it during work discussions.

No, I will never care about a sport, and especially not overpaid assholes who play it for more money in a couple minutes than I will ever make in years, or more in one game than I will ever see in one place ever.

If I had a genie I would change culture so sports got moved to the same category as politics and religion so you’d never hear about it if you weren’t around scumbags.

Usernameblankface,
@Usernameblankface@lemmy.world avatar

I also don’t care in the slightest who’s winning in a huge stadium.

I’ve found that a blank stare when they get to the punch line of their dramatic sports story usually ends the whole thing. You’re meant to react big to every story, so zero reaction throws people off when they want to talk sports.

rosymind, (edited ) in What's the consensus on swearing here

Every other word (not literally) out of my mouth is a curse word, so much so that I feel less of a need to use them here. Plus every-once-and-a-while peeps take my rando opinions far too seriously. So, (to compensate), I try to be more polite than I would when actually speaking

ichbinjasokreativ, in What's your automatic vacuum's name?

ichbinjasokreativ, in Corporate Censorship Bring You Here?

I was hoping that lemmy had more level headed users and less tribalism. I was wrong.

pastermil,

I second this!

sheogorath,

Anonymity is like having a -4 and a disadvantage to saving throws to keep being level headed. It’s far too easy to forget that there’s another person on the other side of the argument.

Worldwide polarization efforts from the TPTB doesn’t help too.

People love echo chambers and affirmations don’t they…

Rentlar,

Sorry that it hasn’t lived up to your expectations.

I don’t believe that the federation model “fixes” tribalism and in fact encourages it in an echo-chamber kind of fashion, by clustering like minded individuals in communities in its own servers with their own moderators.

On the other hand, in my experience this place overall feels a little more mature. Sure you have circlejerk threads and there’s a lot of controversial news that in a couple cases have evolved into online flamewars. I’ve also observed more often where two people disagreeing initially come to a mutual understanding and agreement downthread, that hardly ever happens in online forums.

sarchar, in What are your dental hygiene tips and hacks

Avoid as much sucrose as possible. It is the #1 cause of tooth decay.

ichbinjasokreativ, in What do you like about socialism?

The idea behind it, making life that little bit more fair. It wouldn’t work, but as miguided as it might be, it’s born of empathy and that’s worth something.

Eldritch,

Why wouldn’t it work?

ichbinjasokreativ,

I don’t think that socialism offers people enough incentive to innovate and improve, because it greatly limits the possible reward. I’m all in favour of regulating capitalism to protect the lower classes though, I don’t want to be enslaved by the likes of amazon either.

Eldritch,

Capitalism is barely a few hundred years old. Invention is as old as human history. The Soviet’s despite the brutal social oppression and mass murder. Beat us at every step of the space race save for the last. Researched and discovered a number of the elements of the periodic table. And many many more things.

That you think people invent things only looking for a reward or payout. Really screams that you don’t understand inventors or invention. Nikola Tesla one of the greatest inventors of the 20th century. Died destitute chasing his inventions, with little focus on getting paid.

I could go on. But I hope reality and history generally disagreeing with you is enough to make you reevaluate the propaganda. You’ve been inundated with all your life. Capitalism does little to actually help invention. And people would do it even if they never got paid.

ichbinjasokreativ,

Capitalism was the first economic system ever devised, outside of trading without currency. We know that ancient rome was economically fundamentally capitalist, so that’s a few thousand years at least. And inventing is one thing, but inventions need to be turned into products, which then need to be manufactured and distributed and all of that. And don’t forget about the materials needed for that, which need to be mined and processed. And I can speak from my own experience when I say that if being better at work wouldn’t lead to me making more money, then I’d be slacking off as much as possible instead of being invested in getting things done.

Better work leads to better reward in capitalism, which is by far the most effective method of incetivising people to actually do any work at all. But we sure can agree that the system has been perverted out of proportion and that change needs to happen, I have no illusions about that. We just need to go back to functioning capitalism.

Eldritch,

False. Capitalism itself grew out of mercantilism. Which itself rose out of feudalism. Markets and currency predate capitalism. 18th century philosopher Adam Smith is basically seen as the father of capitalism. And no, Rome was never capitalist. Please do some basic reading.

No, better work leads to nothing specific in capitalism. It sometimes “can”. But the fact that nearly everyone knows someone who’s failed upwards. Well everyone knows one. Donald Trump alone disproves your claim.

StupidBrotherInLaw,

I’m reasonably certain you’re mixing up capitalism with a free market. Free markets are a feature of capitalism but it’s not the only system that has free markets. Socialism also has free markets.

perspectiveshifting, in What are your best air fryer/oven recipes?

Air fryer taquitos has been a big one for my house! A million times better than the premade freezer ones and not much more work if you have a protein cooked already or as a leftover.

I base my approach off thisBut I have used all sorts of proteins instead and it’s always a great meal.
