Treefox, in What are some small things we should change about the human body?

No more cancer please.

KpntAutismus,

there’s almost a vaccine for that

HerrBeter,

“is curing patients a viable business model?”

TheInsane42,
@TheInsane42@lemmy.world avatar

Nop, preventing them from dying is though.

Bakachu,

This is so fucked up but yeah I can see them settling for research on a drug or treatment that just keeps you from reaching Stage 4 to where you become a lifelong consumer of said medical company.

DrRatso,

You can not have a cure for cancer, but a cancer. I promise I am not trying to be pedantic here. Cancers are so different from one another, that a single cure for breast cancer might not even work on all breast cancer.

some_guy, in Congrats, you've been made Ruler of the World. How do you fuck it up?

No steering is needed. Just press down on the gas. It’s already destroying itself.

BeautifulMind, in Why was Ronald Reagan and Nancy Reagan so bad for the American people?
@BeautifulMind@lemmy.world avatar

Reagan, like Trump and Bush43, was the face guy connecting to people while behind the scenes the wrecking crew drafted their EOs and delivered on their patronage’s shadow agenda.

A lot of what Reagan’s admin did was foundational- as head of the executive (which includes regulatory agencies) he had the power to quietly dismantle regulatory agencies, and in so doing hamstring America’s capacity to regulate its own affairs at the request of lobbyists that didn’t want their industries regulated. His legislative affairs team gutted budgets and raided social security while he charmed audiences and the media.

xia, in How do you strike a balance between being present in the moment and planning for the future?

In theory? I guess you would do the minimum to get by, and invest the rest towards a better future.

agamemnonymous, in How do you strike a balance between being present in the moment and planning for the future?
@agamemnonymous@sh.itjust.works avatar

Try to regularly imagine yourself on your death bed, looking back on life. I find that inspires the optimal blend. You don’t want to look back on a life of mindless work, or of fruitless sloth. If old-you would look back happily on a decision, it’s probably the right one.

fury, in What are some small things we should change about the human body?

No more biting down on my tongue or cheeks when eating. Most annoying glitch ever.

Bakachu, (edited )

Omg yes this absolutely. I eat to nourish myself and survive and am punished randomly by self-inflicted mouth wound that lasts for days/weeks => evolutionary failure at its finest.

Insult to injury when the food is actually something healthy like a salad instead of fries.

DABDA, in What are some works/resources that helped make something difficult/unclear finally click for you?
@DABDA@lemmy.world avatar

There’s Simple English Wikipedia which uses basic English words and shorter sentences and tries to limit jargon use.

Random example:

CritFail, in What are some small things we should change about the human body?

Just one universal blood type please

ClockNimble, in Mickey Mouse is now public domain (Steamboat Willie specifically). What do you think we will see this year?

Dope af stuff Felix and Mickey, Noir Buddy Cop stuff? Excited.

robolemmy, in What are some works/resources that helped make something difficult/unclear finally click for you?

When I was in middle school, my brother brought me a set of 3 workbooks about Boolean algebra from the high school library. I can’t remember the title or much of anything else about them, but I went through them and did all the exercises, working until I completely understood every lesson. That basic foundation set me up to easily understand programming, SQL queries, and so many other computer-related things. It kinda defined my entire career. That was in 1978 or so, so it’s been awhile! I retired last year, a bit early, after a fairly successful career as a developer and DBA.

Elephant0991, in How do you strike a balance between being present in the moment and planning for the future?
@Elephant0991@lemmy.bleh.au avatar

You figure out where you want to go. Plan how to get there, and then do things in the present to get there. Don’t get stressed out how things turn out; you can only really have some notion of control of what you are doing. If the current plan doesn’t work, change it, and keep doing it, until you get there, or not.

morphballganon, in Congrats, you've been made Ruler of the World. How do you fuck it up?

If I wanted to make the world worse? Nuclear weapons would be pretty quick.

Buuut why would I want to make the world worse? I’d want the world to be nice for me and other people and creatures.

Or do you mean, even if I act with good intentions, what sort of catastrophic errors am I most likely to make?

If that’s the question, then fascists would probably throw tantrums in response to my aggressively progressive initiatives and I’d get assassinated.

Blamemeta,

Or do you mean, even if I act with good intentions, what sort of catastrophic errors am I most likely to make?

This one

DemBoSain, in What are some of your cheap eats hacks?
@DemBoSain@midwest.social avatar

Get a rice cooker with a steam tray. Make a cup of rice, with frozen veggies in the tray. Spice the rice if you want (a little cumin with pepper slices makes excellent fajitas).

When I was in college I put rice in everything because it disgusted my flatmates. I could cook a meal and repel mooches at the same time.

9715698,

I don’t want to meet anyone who is disgusted by rice. I’m sorry you had to endure that.

grue, in The transition from the holiday season back to the normal drudgery is so depressing. Is there any way to make Jan / Feb less depressing?

What are you talking about? Christmas isn’t even over yet; we’re currently on day 9 of 12. Keep celebrating!

Just make us all shape shifters so we can do whatever we want.
