chaorace, (edited ) in What is the most user repairable robot vacuum cleaner?
@chaorace@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I’ll go to bat for Roborock. All common “user serviceable” parts are available for direct order from them and remain the same between generations so even very old models can be easily maintained with first-party parts.

They unfortunately won’t sell you an internal part like a motor, but you can still find new first-party parts if you know where to look and it generally only takes removing ~10 screws to get at the insides (example).

And Roborock seems to be well supported by Valetudo.

That’s survivorship bias for sure

Fake4000, in What is a nifty little feature modern gadgets have lost?

Memory card slots.

I can tolerate a missing headphone jack, a non replaceable battery, but a missing memory card slot is just too much.

At the moment, the only non Chinese brand of phones that includes this slot are Samsung I think. And even then, certain models also include it.

CabbageColonialist,

Samsung is Korean

PonyOfWar, (edited )

A few Motorola and Sony phones as well as the Fairphone still have them as well.

thethrillman,

Motorola is Chinese they are owned by Lenovo

WhyYesZoidberg,

One big technical reason for this was actually the file system. Back when phones came with various types of sd-card support, they only had a few gigs of storage. fat32 was enough and was supported everywhere. But fat32 had some file system limitations and when sd-card sizes grew over 4gb there were comparability issues since windows was limited to fat32 and ntfs. I can imagine the support hell when a user couldn’t mount the sd card containing photos on his or her computer.

davidgro,

The solution to that was ExFAT, which is another patented MS system, so requires a license fee (I think) but otherwise is compatible with anything (because they all had to pay the fee…) But specifically compatible with Windows out of the box.

moody,

I beliexe exFAT has been made free. It’s the official filesystem of SDXC cards, and many of them come pre-formatted.

Faresh, in What search engine do you recommend that isn't Google or Bing?

I use SearXNG. It is a meta search engine so it use results from various other search engines and you can specify which with !. It does the job for me.

CetaceanNeeded,

My favourite feature is that you can host it yourself, you can even set it up to search over tor or VPN if you’re super privacy conscious.

____,

I was a bit wary when I first spun up an instance, but it’s very low maintenance and mostly just works.

Does it choke in some edge cases? Yeah, but far less often than I had expected. For my own use case it’s low resource and does exactly what it says on the tin - nothing more, nothing less.

It’s my default across a variety of devices, and is perfectly happy behind basic auth and a minimal nginx conf.

Occasionally I’ve even surfaced some oddball results that give me unexpected perspective on a topic.

Facebones,

Somebody reply to this so I remember to spin up a container tomorrow lmao

heyfrancis,
@heyfrancis@lemmy.ml avatar
zip,

Hey, remember to spin up a container!

Facebones,

I did, thanks! 😛 Took a few tries but was over complicating the configs apparently lol

dumpsterlid,

Honestly I feel like searxng is way better than it gets credit for. It clearly isn’t as powerful as google but it isn’t drowning in SEO crap so that difference is entirely negated and then some.

Mr_Blott, in Hot tub owners: any tips? any regrets?

I actually look after them for idiots that install them for rentals.

No1 - Use bromine because it smells less than chlorine

No2 use multi bromine as it has anti algae and anti foam in it

No3 keep the pH correct, about 7.2 to 7.4, same as pool

No4 clean the filter every week

No5 kids love hot tubs, hot tubs HATE kids

No6 FUCKIN SHOWER BEFORE YOU USE IT YOU DAFT CUNT NO WONDER IT TURNED INTO FUCKING SOUP FUCK ME

LemmyKnowsBest,

everything makes sense to me except “hot tubs hate kids.” Please explain what happened

Kids are dirty oily greaseballs and they don’t shower before going in

LemmyKnowsBest, (edited )

I would argue that prepubescent kids are not as greasy and oily as adults are, and although EVERYONE should shower before getting into jacuzzi, practically NOBODY does unless they are forced to do so and/or extremely fastidious about it.

Telodzrum,

So . . . Linux users?

Mr_Blott,

Adults get in the tub, relax and drink a G&T

Kids tend to jump in and out, dragging all the crap from the decking/patio with them each time

Plus they’ll just piss in it, rather than getting out 😂

DwightAllRight, in What is the goofiest Christmas present you received this year?

A bottle opener that captures and shoots the bottle caps out. Fun little gadget.

indepndnt, in So, who or what ruined Christmas this year?

Man, I read these comments and I can relate to so many of them. But honestly, this year, nothing. We’ve recently moved to an area that’s more healthy for our family. I have a partner who’s not abusive. My kids and myself are getting the mental healthcare that we need. It’s snowy outside! We have a Christmas tree and presents! It was not amazing; there was nothing over the top or spectacular. But there was nothing bad. Damn, that feels nice.

ultra,

That’s great!

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

It’s good to hear happy stories too. Especially when many of us posting have not had the best time.

Zevlen,

That’s about how I feel. I know I am blessed and that makes me happy. I don’t take it for granted.

Sorry 😔😐 that someone down voted your comment. That’s not very holiday so Spirit like lol… But I think almost half the comments on here always have at least one downvoted so don’t feel bad 😞

Philo, in What's the consensus on swearing here
@Philo@sh.itjust.works avatar

It makes me laugh when some people give certain words magical powers. They are just fucking words for Christ’s sake.

victorz,

They’re not “magical”, they just have meaning and connotations.

user224,
@user224@lemmy.sdf.org avatar
Globulart,

But certain words DO have power, even if it’s just power attributed by others it’s still power, and it’s really naive to think they don’t.

cosmicrookie,
@cosmicrookie@lemmy.world avatar

Agreed. Words are what made us different than animals and words describing abstract ideas made us better than other primates. Words are maybe the strongest power we have

jj4211,

Given the way humanity works, words generally do and should have power (“profane” or otherwise). If they don’t, what’s the point?

On profanity, to me it’s a set of special words to break out for emphasis. If I just casually use them, then they lose value as emphasis. If those words were just as mundane as others, what would be the point of their existence?

victorz,

Agreed.

MrQuallzin, in What's your automatic vacuum's name?

Colonel Dustard

BradleyUffner, in If you could only listen to someone talk about one topic for the rest of your life, what would it be, and why?

I’m going to metagame this one and say “current events”.

‘history’ maybe even more apt as even or estimations of the future are based on it

Speculater, in People who have made and successfully kept their New Year's resolution, what was it and how did you stay motivated?
@Speculater@lemmy.world avatar

I made a resolution almost 15 years ago to never make another resolution, I’ve kept that resolution ever since.

csm10495, in best app for lemmy?
@csm10495@sh.itjust.works avatar

Sync. Voyager was good too.

victorz,

Shame Sync has a subscription-based model now to get rid of ads.

maryjayjay,

Subscription is for cloud based features (Ultra). It’s a single payment to remove ads

victorz,

Oh shiz, you’re right. Still a bit of a heavy price compared to Boost.

Paradoxvoid,
@Paradoxvoid@aussie.zone avatar

Yeah that’s what made me jump ship to Boost - I sincerely doubt that even if I used Sync for ten years, the value of the ad impressions I give would be worth A$35. I can basically buy a huge number of high-quality games for that amount.

victorz,

You could buy a huge number of high quality games for A$35?

MossyFeathers, in Who in your opinion is the modern day equivalent to Mozart?

King Gizzard. They love weird-ass time signatures (look up the ridiculousness that is Crumbling Castle for an example), polyrhythms, unconventional tuning, and such. They hop from one genre to another, they probably have one of the highest album-to-year ratios in music (not including live and demo albums), sometimes they’re serious, sometimes they’re silly, sometimes they’re silly-serious. The biggest blow to them however, is that nothing they make is truly a “masterpiece”. It all ranges from “good” to “great” but nothing they’ve made is really a “masterpiece”. Maybe in time they’ll make a true masterpiece, but nothing yet quite qualifies imo.

The other nomination I’d make is Devin Townsend. Where King Gizzard is extremely prolific but doesn’t make masterpieces, Devin Townsend takes his time and makes masterpieces. Despite its silliness, Ziltoid the Omniscient is one of the best, if not the best, metal albums, period. It’s an album so good that even my parents, who don’t like metal, have songs they enjoy from the album. Empath is a stunning blend of metal, electronic, prog, praise & worship/gospel,^1 and god knows what else. The man just does things and they come out amazing.

^1 Afaik Devin Townsend’s not a Christian, sorry to any Christian peeps hoping for good Christian music. He just incorporated that sound into the album.

Meltrax, in Who in your opinion is the modern day equivalent to Mozart?

Hans Zimmer? If not in pure skill then in name recognition.

Brunbrun6766, in Is there an artist so horrible that no matter how hard you try that you cannot separate their art from them?
@Brunbrun6766@lemmy.world avatar

Roman Polanski and by extension Jack Nicholson

Olhonestjim,

Wait, what’s up with Jack Nicholson?

Brunbrun6766,
@Brunbrun6766@lemmy.world avatar

Polanski’s known crime happened AT Jack Nicholson’s home. Nicholson tooooootally didn’t know about any of it.
