We (my parents) bought a plot of land a long time ago. We built a house there, it took over a year. We finally finished it up and moved in. A few weeks later, we were in the living room. rrrrRRRRRRRwwwwooooaaahaaaaaaAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRWWWWWAAAAAAAaaaaaaawwwwwwwwAAAAAAAAAAWWWRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRWWWWwwwwaaaaaawwwwwWWWWWAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRAWWWWWWWwwwwwwwwwwooooaaahaaaaaaAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRWWWWWAAAAAAAaaaaaaawwwwwwwwAAAAAAAAAAWWWRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRWWWWwwwwaaaaaawwwwwWWWWWAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRAWWWWWWWwwwwwwwwwwooooaaahaaaaaaAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRWWWWWAAAAAAAaaaaaaawwwwwwwwAAAAAAAAAAWWWRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRWWWWwwwwaaaaaawwwwwWWWWWAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRAWWWWWWWwwwwwwaaawwwwrrrrrrrrr r r r r r r r r r r rr
The windows were rattling, which was neat because they were new and tightly sealed. The doors were rattling, the dishes were rattling
Down in the tree line, half hidden in a grove of trees along a boarder road one property over (maybe 800ft), there was a pretty damned big siren. I’m still somewhat shocked we never noticed it during the construction. No idea what it was, no indication what it was. Just a loud AF air raid style siren. Nothing on the news, no internet or cell phones back then.
After asking the neighbors, it was apparently the test siren for the local nuclear power plant (40 miles away), We had never been there on the first Tuesday of the month at 1pm, so we had never heard it being tested.
More recently, I moved into a new house about 2 years ago. (several moves later) and I was outside on a brisk day. All of a sudden, there was a tonal version of a klaxon, (think LOST) ERRRRRTTTTTT ERRRRRTTTT ERRRRRRRTTTTT ERRRRRTTTTT (3 second pause) ERRRRRTTTTTT ERRRRRTTTT ERRRRRRRTTTTT ERRRRRTTTTT (3 second pause) ERRRRRTTTTTT ERRRRRTTTT ERRRRRRRTTTTT ERRRRRTTTTT (10 second pause) (indistinguishable human speech) WAH ME FNDL WA NAW MAW WAH NENELE FAH WA NA. EFF WANAWA, ME FEDLE ME NO, ME NO MO NO FANALWE FWK THO
We live somewhat near a small airport with a National Guard base attached. In the summer, it’s kinda quiet and far off as it’s a couple miles away. When the air is very cold and the wind blows the right way, it sounds like they’re doing it in my back yard with the exception that the speech is still absolutely unintelligible.
I grew up near a nuclear plant as well! We even got mailed the potassium iodide pill in case of emergency. I’m awful at onomatopoei, but it sounds like ours were different. Mine scaled up to a high, monotonous whine.
So there’s this amazing Chinese deli in San Francisco. We eat there like twice a year and every time we say we need to eat there more. It’s not like we forget, it’s just that we’re busy. They were our main course Thursday. And then leftovers until yesterday. Godsdamn amazing char siu pork. Best I’ve ever had. I gotta order their bacon and their ribs next time.
Like Reddit, KBin and Lemmy are 'link aggregators’
This means, in subject driven Communities (sub-reddits), people post links or images or their thoughts and others comment on them
Reddit is software that’s installed in one central location (server). This means it is owned and controlled by one single commercial entity.
Kbin and Lemmy are both software that are installed in multiple locations (servers), owned and controlled by multiple people and can be installed by anyone. This means no one can ever own or control the entirety of Lemmy.
Reddit, KBin and Lemmy can be accessed by users via websites or apps.
Reddit is centralised. If it disappeared tomorrow, it would be completely gone.
KBin and Lemmy are federated. If one instance (server) disappeared tomorrow, all the others would be unaffected and carry on as normal.
All instances of KBin and Lemmy can talk to all other instances of KBin and Lemmy, as long as they are federated.
Rule breaking and/or toxic instances/servers can be defederated by other servers/instances.
Reddit, KBin and Lemmy are all free to use. However, with Reddit you must contend with invasive privacy and advertising. The way to support KBin and Lemmy is to donate to the development team and the server/instance your account is on.
Each community, at some point in time, has to have someone with severe a case of Main Character Syndrome make a post that refers to another post where their feelings got hurt cuz their initial post didn’t get the exact kind of attention they wanted, which then results in a total shit fit in the comments.
I’ve seen it happen numerous times in my short time on Lemmy. Especially on !memes.
People need to learn how to just suck it up and move on ffs. I swear it’s the r*dditard mentality leaking in here.
As others have pointed out, this sounds like a sleep disorder. A healthy person who gets enough sleep should not have trouble staying awake for an 8 hour shift. This can be a serious condition and needs to be checked by a doctor. The good news is sleep disorders - and there are various kinds - can be resolved fairly quickly with treatment. Going straight to stimulants is not the answer. You should start with your primary physician and consider seeing a specialist for a sleep study.
From 2005 to 2008 in South Florida I created and ran a permit expediting company. It came from my mom managing a construction company, them having too many contracts, and not enough contractors to run their own permits. I saw a need and got together with a couple of friends to incorporate.
We pitched it to the owner of the company my mom managed and got a contract from them. We eventually picked up other companies as well.
So the job went like this: one of us be assigned to a specific geographic area or company for the day, we would stop by the office, pick up the paperwork for whatever permits had to be filed, retrieved, delivered.
We would visit the city building department and depending on the city (each ran things in drastically different ways with no consistency) we would be there for 15 minutes or all day. Some permits would be a quick, single day turnaround or could be in bureaucratic hell for a month or two. We’d charge based on the complexity and time involved in getting permits approved. Then we would either deliver the permits to the contractor or the job site. On occasion we would deliver liens to customers who didn’t pay their bills which could sometimes get dangerous.
The only people I’ve ever met that did this exact type of work were people I met within city building departments. It’s a relatively boring, but uncommon profession.
The job came with all kinds of weird knowledge that I’ve never had to use again, like how many palm trees on the property equal a shade tree for the purpose of landscaping requirements. Than answer back then was 3.
The company was born out of a construction boom after Hurricane Katrina and died during the housing market crash of 2008.
Edited for spelling and sentence structure.
Also edit: sometimes getting permits approved would involve meeting with city engineers, making corrections on engineering documents, and just having a good rapport with the city.
Also, currently I am a change control analyst for a telecom company. My job description literally says “protect the network”. Essentially network engineers submit projects to me, I check the projects for accuracy, impact risk, importance, etc. A lot of the time, I reject work because of errors, cutting corners, not enough preparation, etc.
My job is to balance the projects being done VS how many customers I want to piss off because their services get taken down. My engineers either absolutely love me, or would like to have the opportunity to stab me in a dark alley, there really is no in between. Generally the ones I reject often for crap work are the ones that also want to stab me.
This is an absolutely boring one, but did you know part of your seatbelt, right now, could just be colored in?
How about your seat cover? Your steering wheel? Some poor bastard had to go get that out of stock, bring it into repair, go over the entire lot, and take a special pencil to color in those little scratches, or mark it as unrepairable.
I was that bastard for awhile. It sucked. 10 hours going over whatever needed checking that day. An “exciting” day meant a defect hit the line and we needed to hunt it down, hopefully without stopping production.
“Repair” can cover a lot of things, and that was the worst repair work I’ve ever done.

…This is so simple it’s making me ask to be sure…This specific repair gig was…Coloring in scratches?
I mean we can’t generalise human for only liking certain part of the chicken, some like breast, some like wings, some like thigh, so it’s pretty fair to say we shouldn’t generalise what a zombie might prefer. Some will like your hand, some like your scalp, some like your brain, and some like your intestine.
Maybe ask the zombie what they like before you sacrifice your friend, it would be wasteful if you throw the whole thing, isn’t it?
I agree but mistakes from season 1 are still going to be problematic to the story, still wondering if they are just going to ignore that they made the idea of reincarnating as a different sex as something someone would expect to happen over being something no one would expect.
I’ve never seen a healthy poly relationship and I’ve seen many but I still think that it could work given the right circumstances. People already suck at handling a single relationship so statistically handling more is just significantly more difficult not to mention all the externals like community and society as whole.

I guess that’s a fair point. My wife and I were the stable thing in each other’s lives for years before this started. We have a love that can’t be stopped and have navigated more together than most couples ever will. Neither of us would have considered a second partner if we thought it could have weakened our foundational relationship. That is what has freed us to have these experiences.
A +1 for Woodford Reserve and Knob Creek, especially Woodford’s nicer offerings. Those are great choices.
I’m going to disagree on the Basil Hayden and the Bulleit. I wouldn’t recommend them to a bourbon enthusiast (or to anyone really). Bulleit in particular I think doesn’t really offer a lot of the classic bourbon experience that someone who is into bourbon might get excited about. To me, it drinks quite hot and is pretty thin.
