DuckOverload, in Which of your favorite creators content quality went downhill very quickly?

Joe Rogan.

Since nobody else is saying it.

Agrivar,

To go downhill implies that it was once good.

corsicanguppy,

He was the bomb in phant-uh… Newsradio

DuckOverload,

I think he’s a good host for engaging and entertaining conversations, if you don’t take him seriously. The problem is he became hugely politically consequential, and he can’t decide if he’s just an everyday moron (ha ha) or a powerful voice with meaningful opinions.

Solo, in Which YouTuber still creates high-quality videos to this day?

Just look up what creators are on nebula. Almost all of them creat high quality cpntent.

fpslem,

With a few exceptions and hold-outs still on YouTube only, I have found this to be generally true too.

cheesebag,

I agree, though is TLDR News that good? I see tons of their thumbnails but get weird vibes from them. Didn’t they repeat Russian propaganda?

OhmsLawn,

I’m honestly uncomfortable with TLDR. I haven’t checked up, but every time I watch an episode, it just feels off.

cheesebag,

Ok same!

OR3X, in Which of your favorite creators content quality went downhill very quickly?

SVSeeker. At first it seemed like a really inspirational channel about a guy building a giant boat in his backyard in Oklahoma that was going to be used as a free to anyone research vessel, but as time went on everyone slowly realized the dude had basically no idea what he was doing and was super hostile to anyone telling him otherwise. Now it’s been two years since lunching the boat and he has done none of the things he promised to do with it (like even leave the coast) and it seems pretty clear everyone got duped into helping him build a retirement house boat instead of a research vessel.

Peafield, in Which YouTuber still creates high-quality videos to this day?
dsemy,

My favorite YouTuber for sure - no thumbnails, no clickbait, no asking for subscriptions or money (he used to accept donations way back but stopped since he felt like he could make do without them), minimal intro and outro, he reads comments (he reads at least one comment from the previous episode on every episode of his main let’s play) and he’s been making the same kind of content for over a decade (main let’s play has over 500 episodes, each usually around 30 minutes long, sometimes much longer).

I haven’t played Minecraft in years at this point but I still watch every video he puts out.

Neve8028,

he used to accept donations way back but stopped since he felt like he could make do without them

He actually has channel memberships now but with absolutely no perks lol. There’s no expectation to become a member which is nice. I’ve been subbed to the $2/mo tier for about a year or two now. Been watching etho for like 10 so it’s nice to support a little more directly than blocking ads lol.

Fubarberry, in Why aren't modern 3D platformers as good as the PS2 era of 3D platformers?
@Fubarberry@sopuli.xyz avatar

Can’t comment on the 3rd person shooter/3d platformer hybrids, but games like Mario Odyssey are fantastic modern 3d platformers. Meanwhile I’ve recently replayed some 3d platformers from the n64-gamecube eras and found they didn’t hold up as well as I remembered.

Lafari,

I agree the N64 and GameCube ones aren’t as good as the PS2 ones from an objective standpoint. All the best platformers exist on PS2, I really don’t know why. They just went on a roll.

AnonTwo,

So...you grew up with Ps2 is what i'm hearing.

Lafari,

There are no 3rd person shooter-platformers on the other consoles, I’ve used a bunch of consoles including N64 and GameCube. They just don’t have the same kinds of games. I wish people would look past the fact they’re old and assuming it’s just a nostalgia thing… I can explain why the PS2 platformers are more complex and detailed and better

dpkonofa,

I can explain why the PS2 platformers are more complex and detailed and better

Then why haven’t you? The whole problem is you keep saying that this is objectively true without providing any evidence that comes anywhere close to being objective.

AnonTwo, (edited )

3rd person shooters are already a small niche and that's without even including platformer!

Nobody can figure out what you're saying because you're associating "good" with a subgenre of a subgenre

boletus,

Super mario odyssey is the most polished and impressive 3d mario game ever made. Not sure how people think that n64 mario is better except for nostalgia.

PeterLossGeorgeWall,

I think it comes down to the combo of nostalgia in combo with iconic games. For example, Mario 64 was so cool when it came out. Even the feel of it was new and different to anything else available.

boletus,

It laid the groundwork for what made future platformers good

turkalino, in What could my upstairs neighbor possibly be doing to make this much noise?
@turkalino@lemmy.yachts avatar

The worst offenders are usually obese people with bad gaits where they pound the ground with their heels every step

NightAuthor,

Ironically, my wife who is half my weight walks louder than I do.

AA5B,

I was going to say this, plus the only person I’ve ever seen walk hard enough to leave marks on a hardwood floor was this tiny woman in very tall heels

RBWells,

The lightest member of our household is the stompiest walker here too. I don’t understand how she can generate that much force.

Santa Claus Conquers the Martians is a cyberpunk movie.

Mars is a dystopian, broken society in which cyberware is so ubiquitous that we only ever see one Martian without visible augmentation. Every character in the movie does what they do for purely selfish reasons, with the exception of the idiot Droppo, the old man Chochem who remembers society for what it was before it went to hell, and the mythological embodiment of generosity himself. When Chochem suggests that Mars needs a Santa Claus, the immediate response isn’t to research and emulate St. Nick, nope. Martian society is so degenerate that the first idea is to commit a crime: to kidnap the jolly old elf. And all of Earth’s governments are incapable of stopping them.

Cyberware, broken society, selfish characters, rampant crime, laughably inadequate government? What genre does that sound like?

When I pointed out that Santa Claus Conquers the Martians predates Blade Runner, the film that most people consider to be the first cyberpunk movie, by some 18 years, at a tabletop session of Cyberpunk 2020, I was less than popular with those assembled.

I decided to not press my luck by pointing out that it came out 4 years before the book Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep.

Hooray for Santy Claus.

Shyfer,

Never even heard of this movie, but I’m convinced.

HollandJim, in What is your unpopular flim opinion

Pee Wee’s Big Adventure is the quintessential road movie and it’s rarely been done better.

GentlemanLoser,

Au revoir, Simone!

HollandJim,

Merci boucoup, Pee Wee!

scratchresistor,

This isn’t controversial, in a really good way :)

I wish it weren’t… But there are a lot of people out there who’d rather just cancel him. He was a really creative, decent fellow

logicbomb, in Would a perfectly flat, tight sail on a boat be more efficient than a sail like we all know?

According to my college physics 101 professor, a curved sail is generally superior in all situations. There are sails made out of rigid materials, and they generally are curved, even though they could be flat. Everybody who sails knows that you can adjust the slack in your sail, and that sometimes a tighter sail is better, for example when tacking. You can tell this just from the feel.

Now, then, it’s been a LONG time since my physics 101 class, but the explanation was something like this: Although this is an oversimplification, you can imagine that a sail works when air particles bounce off of it. The momentum imparted to the sail depends not only on the direction that the wind is coming from, but also the direction that it ends up going when it bounces off the sail. A curved sail helps redirect the wind away from the sail in exactly the direction that the sail is pointing, which is better at pushing the vehicle in the correct direction.

Another way to look at this is if it is a pure matter of air pressure. A curved surface will be better at creating air pressure inside the curve. It’s like if you’re driving and you hold something out the window. When you hold a rigid board out of the window, it will be hard to hold in place, but the air pressure won’t build up behind it as much as a sack, for example. If you hold a sack out the window, it will probably just be ripped out of your hands.

dustyData, in Do Israeli Politicians' adult children get conscripted just like the average adult Israeli citizen as part of mandatory service?

The assumption that direct familial involvement would make people more peaceful or make them take more ethical decisions is flat out incorrect. If anything it will make them more ruthless and dehumanizing against the “other” and seek even faster ways of total annihilation rather than difficult nuanced and diplomatic peaceful solutions. The military mindset is a very rigid one, with only rights and wrongs, blind obedience, the only nuance allowed is tactical nuance, the only complexity allowed is logistic complexity. Morally and ethically it’s always down to I’d rather the other die than me. The IDF once traded 1000 prisoners for 1 IDF soldier, what makes you think they will not kill 10000 children if it means it saves 1 soldier?

CerealKiller01,

The IDF once traded 1000 prisoners for 1 IDF soldier, what makes you think they will not kill 10000 children if it means it saves 1 soldier?

Because… the moral considerations in both cases are completely different…? How is this even a question?

That’s like saying “He once bought a car for $50,000, what makes you think he won’t steal $500,000 if it meant getting a Tesla?”

OhmsLawn, in What are your "poor person" money life hacks?

Here’s the trick I used when I was young and poor. I worked for cash with an estate liquidator, and I saw the passion some of the customers had for their collectables. I decided to develop that flavor of passion for a collection of $20 bills.

For me, the hardest part of saving money (assuming it’s even a possibility) is avoiding the trap of saving to spend. The savings itself has to become a goal, and that can be really, really boring.

Another tactic I used was to always save double the value of a large planned purchase: if I started with $500 and I wanted a $200 item, I’d save until I had $900 before spending. That way my stack never felt like it was diminishing.

flicker, in Lesbians of lemmy, how do you introduce your SO to other people without getting them confused for just a friend?

"Started?" Here in Tennessee we never stopped calling each other girlfriend.

But as others said, "Partner." I use it to talk about my boyfriend (since I'm a well-known demi person locally and the sex of whoever I'm with can be a massive question mark.)

Was gonna say, women calling each other “girlfriend” when they are in fact simply friends and not dating isn’t something new at all.
