Donebrach, in Why don't public restroom stalls have OPEN/OCCUPIED indicators like porta potties do?
@Donebrach@lemmy.world avatar

Uh, like if the door’s closed it’s more than likely occupied.

oohgodyeah,

Useless if the door swings shut by default, likely from poor horizontal alignment.

CileTheSane,
@CileTheSane@lemmy.ca avatar

Try to open it. If it doesn’t open it’s in use.

FooBarrington,

Which brings us back to the initial question.

Kolanaki, (edited )
@Kolanaki@yiffit.net avatar

You can also usually see feet under the door since there’s like 5 feet of space between the floor and the bottom of the door…

Gabu,

That’s an american thing

FooBarrington,

Which brings us back to the initial post:

I hate peaking under the stalls or knocking doors to figure it out. The answer is so simple.

Kolanaki, (edited )
@Kolanaki@yiffit.net avatar

Just because OP doesn’t like it doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist, nor does it change the question of what to do when they don’t have said indicators. All OP asked was “why don’t they have indicators.” These are reasons why. The other reasons are greed and laziness.

FooBarrington,

Come on, it doesn’t help anybody to suggest the things they say they don’t want to do.

“I want to do X without Y”

“Have you tried Y?”

It’s just a completely useless suggestion.

CileTheSane,
@CileTheSane@lemmy.ca avatar

You don’t have to peak under or knock, just try to open it. If it doesn’t open don’t bang or rattle it just walk away.

FooBarrington,

“Why don’t toilet stalls have indicators?”

“Just try to open them”

Yeah, that’s also not a useful suggestion, even less the second time around.

Amaltheamannen, in Why don't public restroom stalls have OPEN/OCCUPIED indicators like porta potties do?

I’ve never seen one without.

garbagebagel,

Where I’m at, the majority of them have the lock with indicator but that lock is broken and above it is a shitty non indicating lock.

DannyMac,
@DannyMac@lemmy.world avatar

In 'merica, we love to grab the door and shake it or look through the 2 inch gap to check if it’s occupied 🇺🇲

cori,

Don’t forget to also knock loudly and yell “IS ANYBODY IN THERE???”

synae,
@synae@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Bust the door down. if they stand their ground and shoot you - it’s occupied

INHALE_VEGETABLES,

Whoresradish, in A friend offer me a investment opportunity at 15% annually, is it too good to be true ?

It is probably a scam, but maybe not. Ask him to explain the business plan to you and show you the numbers. If he is unwilling it is definitely a scam.

xantoxis, in No politics inteded: Why isn't Trump after leaving office in any way or shape involved in politics say as member of congress or senate?

In fairness to Trump, he’s been pretty busy defending himself from a record number of indictments. Gets in the way of political participation.

So !fucknestle

Thanks :-)

Etterra, in Cookie purchase or hell?

No. That question is now the default of all POS (point of sale) systems. If they’re not wait staff, bar tenders, delivery, or performing some other service, there is literally no reason to tip them.

How to glue things together

AngryDemonoid, (edited ) in Do you know of any obscure useful websites?

I’ve been using squoosh.app a lot recently. Found it in a similar thread

EDIT: It is an image compression site where the images never leave your device. Or so the privacy policy says anyway. It took some tweaking, but i’ve had some images with an 80%+ size reducrion with almost no perceivable quality loss.

bappity, (edited )
@bappity@lemmy.world avatar

can you edit in a description of what it does? (I mean it’s pretty evident when you visit at first glance but just for others convenience)

in the mean time, for anyone reading, it’s an image compression site

AngryDemonoid,

Done, thanks for the suggestion. I forget things like that sometimes.

bappity,
@bappity@lemmy.world avatar

thanks :D

I’d also like to highlight TinyPNG. It does compress images pretty well and does batching of up to 20 images of 5 mb each for free.

tinypng.com

And, of course, its counterpart SVG OMG with super fine grain controls.

Gallardo994, (edited ) in What cheap tool/gadget do you use that greatly improves your daily life?
  • Leatherman metal bracelet with a lot of tools on the wrist. Not only it is strong and sturdy, but also looks cool. Also, saved me from being completely locked inside a room with no one around cause the door handle decided to break. Quickly disassembled the locking mechanism with the bracelet and was free in 2 mins, lol. Leatherman might be on an expensive side but there sure are alternatives. More than that, somehow I never had any issues with airports. They literally let me take it onboard every single time.
  • Phone holder for bed, aka robo-arm. Watching content before/while sleeping has never been more convenient.
  • A waist bag. No more stretched out jeans cause I keep all my stuff in the pockets.
  • A gas lighter. Works as a candle substitute if necessary. Also stylish.
  • A small but reliable kickscooter might be a great option if you need to go some distance that’s too long to walk and too short for a taxi drive.
  • A second usb-c charger for the laptop actually is a convenient thing if you need to carry the laptop across rooms. No need to carry the bulky charger every time.
  • Speaking of chargers, consider buying a lot of 2 or 3 way wireless chargers for your mobile devices. I don’t remember last time I bothered with plugging in my phone cause it’s always charged wherever I go due to having wireless chargers everywhere.
  • On an expensive side, but a good sturdy metal gaming chair.
  • A portable SSD. Saved me by having all my backups many times.
  • A usb-A and usb-C compatible flash drive.
  • Paper cups and plates I guess? I don’t like doing dishes and those two both eliminate the need to, but without a downside of being plastic.
  • Gonna sound strange, but a ladder. Replacing burnt lightbulbs with a chair is a nightmare, at least in my house.
Dontfearthereaper123,

All good things I’m just curious abt the choice of a scooter over a bike. If you work your way up u can eventually replace a car/taxi entirely with it

2ncs,

Paper cups and plates I guess? I don’t like doing dishes and those two both eliminate the need to, but without a downside of being plastic.

:(

cmbabul,

Bad news, Leatherman bracelets seem to be retired, unless there’s another series besides Tread that I can’t find

Rouxibeau,

I have a bulb tool that screws onto a standard broom pole handle. $3.

lorez,

You forgot to mention a towel and a rubber chicken with a pulley inside.

radix,
@radix@lemm.ee avatar

A metal gaming chair? I’ve never heard of such a thing.

Gallardo994,

What I meant is a gaming chair with some good metal base construction. I currently use DxRacer Iron series and it’s by far superior to all alternatives I’ve used.

DeadlineX,

Equally as expensive but I’ve found high quality office chairs are much better. Gaming chairs used to be fine for me until WFH. Every day after work my back was killing me, and I couldn’t ever game after work.

I got a relatively cheap ($500) office chair and it’s been fantastic. Ergonomic, fully adjustable in every way, and shaped for someone to sit in for 8 hours a day. Fantastic. I’d love an aeron but even used they’re over 1k and 500 was already a lot to spend on a chair for me.

Nostalgia, in People who have those talking buttons for their pet, how long did it take for them to catch on, and do they really work?

We got a set of these for our puppy, and she picked up on them pretty quick. We’ve got walk, food, play, and outside. It’s not perfect though. Like she’s supposed to hit the walk button when she needs to go potty, but occasionally instead she’ll take a shit on the floor and then hit the button. “Look dad I pooped on the floor so we can go outside now!” And I feel like a play button may have backfired cuz she slaps that fucker all day long. I mean they aren’t going to train your pet for you but they are a useful tool. I’m much happier that she’s smacking the button instead of clawing at the front door.

The Apple Watch does.

BastingChemina, in How long would you live if electricity for the whole world went out permanently?

There is a book that describes exactly that: Ashes, Ashes by Barjavel.

It’s a classic of French science-fiction literature and I recommended everyone to read.

It was written in 1943, it describes a parisian dystopian society in 2050 where all the electricity suddenly stop overnight. Even thought the book is 80 years old it is surprisingly accurate in some aspect.

BastingChemina,

For something more modern there is also the French mini series: youtu.be/VHCeqvQBNIM?si=RvjrgWHh2BNwFqT-

The world collapsed overnight and we are following few survivors. The second episode in the gas station gave me goosebumps.

The videos with the full episodes are available on youtube but region locked to France. I don’t know how to make it available for everyone.

Keanu

Serially accused of extremely appropriate behavior

EssentialNPC,

Do you have any examples? I ask not to be confrontational, but instead because I have read nothing but kind things about him. Thank you!

amio,

Appropriate behavior. It's a Keanu meme because he's not been accused of a bunch of shit, like way too many high profile actors have.

(Or if this is some other joke, I don't get it. )

EssentialNPC,

Or I am just an idiot and cannot read. Let’s go with that, since it is the truth. Thank you for the kind correction!

WeLoveCastingSpellz, in How is your part of the world doing?

Turkey. Bad, nothing more to say

Everythingispenguins,

I actually wish you would say more. I only know generally how turkey is doing now and I know almost nothing about how it was in the 90s. Please feel free to educate us.
