Zachariah, (edited ) in Where can a Boomer catch up on current computer/software technology?
@Zachariah@lemmy.world avatar

Lots of good info on laptops here without all the marketing junk: www.rtings.com/laptop/reviews/best

Get Windows 11 Pro (not Home), so you have more options for turning off annoying crap built-in to Windows.

For CAD get at least 16GB of RAM, but I’d recommend 32 or 64.

Mouse reviews: www.rtings.com/mouse

CAD would benefit from a larger monitor than a laptop can have: www.rtings.com/monitor

If you do consider Linux, check out system76.com — If you get one of their computers, Linux (Pop!_OS) comes pre installed, is supported by this company, and would be pretty similar to using Windows or MacOS.

just_ducky_in_NH,

Thanks, you gave me lots of good resources here!

ElPussyKangaroo, in What do normal people look at on their phones?

Heh, look at you, asking this in Lemmy, as if we’re all normal.

Patagonia for apparel and Red Wing for footwear.

Fermion,

Red Wing’s imported footware isn’t at all durable. They do still have some models made in Minnesota that are supposed to live up to their reputation.

uthredii,

Yep, Patagonia have a repair it for life guarantee.

HollandJim,

Was looking for this.

Always bought Patagonia, and they just repaired a 26-year-old ski vest for me, for free, as the inner lining was falling apart.

Miele (European) (dish) washing / dryers / fridges

The vacuum repair guy on Reddit also loved their vacuums.

Rai,

Their vacuums are incredible, as are their ranges.

Source: Rich friend.

Schmuppes,

They cost a small fortune, but I think they still are as good as their decade old reputation.

lemann,

They also have some 3d printable parts on their official Thingiverse and Printables profiles

Goodman,

Wow that is awesome. When I need a washing machine I’ll check them out!

ours,

In my experience, much better than Siemens/Bosch.

Unlike those, Miele doesn’t seem to have entry-level-priced equipment that just sucks in term of quality.

We bought a bag less vacuum 4 years ago. The turbo brush for pet hair stats showing some wear but the whole thing works solid to this day. Even the flimsy feeling handle is still fine Edit: EU - Germany

lyam23, in What are your best Sleep tips and hacks?

Cut back on caffeine; don’t drink it past noon.

Go to bed at the same time every night.

Keep your room cool and dark.

When you get in bed, turn the light off and go to sleep. Don’t read or watch videos in bed.

Chamomile and Valerian root teas are magic.

If you suffer from anxiety, find and utilize healthy coping mechanisms to reduce it. Meditation can be helpful.

I usually fall asleep within 5 to 10 minutes, and sleep 7.5 to 8.5 hours most nights.

Gregorech, in What's the funniest mishearing of song lyrics you've had?

Pearl Jam; Daughter

Center of a Rhododendron = Center of he own attention.

HonkTonkWoman,

Always loved Eddie making fun of Mike for thinking the Kiss lyrics were, “I wanna rock n roll all night, and part of every day.”

themeatbridge, (edited )

Pearl Jam feels like cheating.

Here’s the classic Yellow Ledbetter

VaultBoyNewVegas,

I still don’t know the full lyrics of even flow. Every time I hear it fucks with my head and I forget the words.

Bishma,
@Bishma@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Yellow Ledbetter doesn’t count. It’s mumbled in recordings because the lyrics change over time to adapt to whatever conflict we’re currently wasting life on.

DerpyPlayz18, in Does wind power cause visual pollution in your opinion?

Gray smoke is a worse type of visual pollution imo

Mango,

Yeah and blurry vision is pretty shit.

plenipotentprotogod, (edited ) in What sci-fi-esque inventions are the most plausible and could happen soonest?

You might be interested in the pop-sci book Soonish: ten emerging technologies that’ll improve and/or ruin everything. I haven’t read it myself, but I’ve read the authors’ other book about space colonization, and it was excellent so I would expect this one to be as well.

Hadriscus,

Ah that’s Zach Weinersmith the author of SMBC, it has to be excellent. Haven’t read it but will put it on my list now

JavaTheHutt, in Why are there so many apps that could be websites?
@JavaTheHutt@programming.dev avatar

I would say in some cases, people are conditioned now to expect an app, even if it’s basically a website. I think in a mobile context, most non-techy people don’t normally think to open up a browser and say, browse Amazon or something. Instead they go for the Amazon app on their phone, and browse/shop/whatever there.

I wouldn’t say this is exclusive to phones either. I once worked on a product that was essentially web-native, but they had to ship a desktop app because their market expected it, even though it was only a web-view wrapper to the website. No offline storage, no difference in behaviour, or need for some specific API; nothing. I guess you try explaining to boomers that a web-view desktop app is unnecessary.

The data vacuuming and additional marketing are just added benefits for the app developer, if they go down that path (they usually do).

FederatedSaint, in Is Sync for Android worth the cost?

Bought the lifetime a few months ago when it came out and haven’t regretted it!

mortalic,

Same, sync is awesome and the dev clearly worked hard on it.

scytale, in What's the best music streaming service?

I think Apple Music and Tidal pay the most per stream, but Tidal has a smaller library than Spotify. It might be different now so not sure.

morbidcactus, (edited )

Anecdotal, I’ve not actually had a lot of instances (if any) of Spotify having something but Tidal not, usually find albums that I’m interested in from band camp no problem and if it’s missing its missing on both. Sound quality is noticeably higher which is the reason I tend to prefer, the app has gotten better in my experience

I have all my digital copies on my NAS with jellyfin to stream them as well, sometimes it’s just easier to stream off tidal or Spotify though

fiat_lux, in what is a parental advice you wish you could give to your father/mother before they had you?

If you want your children to engage in a certain behavior, you have to actively model that behavior. A kid isn't going to do the thing if they never see you doing the thing, no matter how much you call them out on not doing the thing.

cley_faye, in Why are there so many apps that could be websites?

From a technical point of view, it sometimes makes sense:

  • access to more interesting API
  • guaranteed persistent storage
  • no compatibility issues (different browsers, settings, extensions, etc.)

Of course, that’s just what could be done easier with an app. There’s also some less interesting points:

  • giving less control to the user
  • accessing more things than needed
  • making the experience worse by hooking every single events out of the webview

So… the answer is “because”.

HeartyBeast, (edited ) in What non-SMS non-Apple app can I use to "text" my younger kid on their iPad
@HeartyBeast@kbin.social avatar

Step 1 - create a child account for them. Do not share an AppleId with them.

Second - this may feel a bit old fashioned - but have a look at downloading Skype

  • Free
  • Cross platform
  • No phone number needed
  • chat as well as audio/video calls.
KammicRelief,

Ok, I took your advice, bit the bullet and created the child account. Much better! I now have “Ask to buy” set up, and screen time and all that good stuff. I should’ve done this earlier. thanks for that! Skype seems like a decent alternative too… I’ll definitely consider it (though the easy option right now is seeming like Discord, just because the rest of us are on it already). Thanks!

HeartyBeast,
@HeartyBeast@kbin.social avatar

Enjoy. Feel free to message me if you get stuck. Also check out the screen time and parental control options in iOS Settings - they are pretty good for setting limits on what a little’un can do and for how long.

KammicRelief,

Yes! I’ve started using those already. Good stuff. Unfortunately the Content Restrictions seem to block Roblox completely, no matter how I configure it… so I’ll have to leave those off, but that’s probably ok. The iPad is mostly used supervised anyway. Thank you again!
