When minimum wage was increased to $7.25/hour (although it should be increased again).
Affordable Care Act
Funding for covid tests and vaccines
Don’t know if these count, since they only come from SCOTUS decisions however Congress has not written a law stripping these rights. Right to have a same-sex relationship (2003) Right to marry a same-sex partner (2015) Right to employment while LGBT (2020)
There were also Cash for Clubker programs (although that could’ve just been state level) that gave people money to buy a newer car with better gas milage to help the environment and keep people from using as much gas.
Stimulus checks at the end of Bush presidency and during covid. As far as I know, those were the first, creating a precedent that the government could sometimes provide financial relief directly to citizens.
We had something similar to get people to by electric cars where I live. It was removed some years ago, and what I remember most from that is a woman on the news talking about how she just spontaneously bought a new car before the benefit went away, just because why not the benefit is going away soon might as well just buy a new car.
Affordable Care Act is a mixed bag. It brings insurance to the masses, but insurance is a rip off for the most part. ACA is very half baked without providing a Medicare plan buy in (public option) or forcing everyone to purchase their insurance from the exchange to increase benefits and drive prices down.
Personally I wish we just had universal healthcare/Medicare for all in the US. Hopefully I live long enough to see it.
The ACA isn’t the end goal for sure, but it’s better than where we were before. Hopefully as people get used to it, we will be more likely to pass a universal healthcare system.
The problem with the ACA was that it had to make a lot of compromises to get it through with support by Republicans. While the ACA was initially very unpopular, it’s become more popular in time (if you discount rebranding efforts like Kentucky Connect being the name of the ACA marketplace there… Then Kentucky politicians calling ACA broken but Connect good causing Connect to be popular but ACA not in that state).
It was a good effort at getting the foot in the door for universal Healthcare one day, imo.
As someone who has more hobbies than time, I seriously don’t understand how people can have no hobbies. How do these people live? How do they find fulfillment? What do they do in their spare time, only entertainment?
We’re too tired. That’s the answer. It’s not that watching TV is my hobby, it’s that I’m burnt out and don’t have the mental energy to do anything. My old hobbies feel like chores. New hobbies seem like so much work
I feel you and I’ve been fighting this. I feel like personally I’m a lot happier and find it easier to do things when I actually do my hobbies… It’s kind of like exercise. You often don’t want to do it when you’re busy and tired, but if you do it consistently you usually have more energy and feel better in the long term. Totally understand it can be a luxury to even consider doing a hobby, and I definitely don’t know your situation, but I hope you can push through and get to a better balance! Life’s too hard sometimes :(.
I’m also a person with a million hobbies. I’ve got TV or audiobooks on in the background as I do woodworking, smoke meat, play instruments, record music (ok, there’s nothing on in the background while I’m recording), go sing karaoke, rock climb, work on motorcycles, garden, or one of the other million things I might be doing. My family passively sits and watches television.
As far as I’m concerned, that’s fine. If it makes them happy then I’m happy for them. I couldn’t be content that way but it takes different strokes to move the world.
Lady I used to sit next to at work didn’t use an ad blocker. She also would have like the “do you want to install this plugin?” thing open in her ide for weeks. I don’t know how she did it. She’s a software developer so she’s reasonably tech literate. It just didn’t bother her enough to think about doing something about it.
reminds me of one of my coworkers years ago, we all had cubicle desk computer jobs but oh Lord she had so many scribbled on post-it notes stuck all over her cubicle and all over the edge of her computer screen 🤦♀️ She was an older lady close to retirement age.
The fundamental cause of America’s problem is the two-party system. If you want to get rid of that you have to switch to a proportional representation system. I would suggest working at the local or state level. I do not know of any organization working on this issue. You would likely have to start one yourself or hire someone else to do so.
If you’re genuinely going to do it, any suggestion I make here about specifics would be pointless, as you should do significant research before deciding on what flavor of proportional representation to push and where. But, the key is to adopt a system known for accurate and small party representation. If a party gets enough votes to win a single seat, they should be awarded a single seat. If they get a third of the votes, they should get a third of the seats.
I used to say this too, but living in a multiparty country for 20+ years now (NL) I don’t see it as an advantage when you need to govern so large a country. It sounds like an easy solution until you try to get agricultural and city people to agree, and then now try multiplying it by 50.
Unfortunately, a two-party system will likely work best as you’ll need a common consensus to move the country in a single direction.
Wow. You really don’t care to understand a point other than your own. You want to pivot anyone else’s opinion to meaninglessness, and so I don’t see a need to reply further to a one-note-mentality as yours. Enjoy your holidays and goodbye.
You’re saying that choice isn’t good and that people need to choose better (perhaps choosing more like you?). Skip the pretense and only have one choice.
The guy before me keeps changing my position to secure his point, but no - more isn’t any better than no choice. We have to choose for people with a plan, not a platform, and one that works for all of us and not at the expense of any of us (because one day they’ll come for you).
Regardless of the number of choices that we appear to have, it doesn’t matter if the real choices are ultimately made through other means (e.g. lobbyists in the US).
Not sure why the downvotes on OP, it’s a reasoned opinion and worthy of discussion.
I think you’re saying that if you have too many political parties then the whole system gets watered down so much that nothing happens and the direction of the country can change at any time because there’s no unified agenda. Isn’t there a system to elect a leader who’d set the agenda and coordinate?
One would hope that through conversation we’d have more reasoned information but it appears camping on a platform is where people go to “win”.
We’ve dozens of parties trying to win to form a coalition, so sheer numbers don’t help. You can easily argue that our politics have grown stale and ineffective here in the recent years, and there’s a growing need for change.
For instance we’ve already had a few elections where a farmers collective party and the far right party have won their elections, but immediately afterwards (sometimes within a day, as in the farmers (BBB)) they’ve abandoned key parts of the platform that helped get them elected. Or their positions are so vile that no other party will work with them.
I’d argue that there are the side effects of taking a position first and wanting change at any cost. This is the cost - only more stagnation.
My point is “more” does not mean “better” - often, it’s just more of the same. Vote for and demand “Better”.
Just imagine if all we had were FvD and VVD. Because that’s what the US has. You can vote between far right, and regular right.
Yeah, we don’t exactly have the best government here right now, but at least we have options. There’s a surprising amount of fluctuation in dominant parties over the years, something you’ll never see in a two-party system.
Learned a trade that I love as a career (industrial electrician), fell in love with my boyfriend, bought and renovated a home from 1890 together, plan to get married eventually!
I’m a gay guy, although it’s not exactly something I bring up around my coworkers. The exception being the shop I worked in for 7 years because those fellas were like family.
That’s cool about your daughter though, the trades are a very straight male dominated field
I don’t think so, I think unfunny comedy is being highlighted and comedians trying to be Carlin with their commentary but offensive comedy is alive and well.
With how often I run into people who don’t even get super obvious jokes and take memes super seriously: It’s no surprise that the top comment in this thread says “most jokes aren’t funny and most comedians aren’t funny.” Nothing is funny when you lack a sense of humor.
The downvotes and political tangent replies only confirm my opinion on the matter. Ya don’t have a sense of humor and just want to deflect from that fact by getting offended and it’s lame
All the advances in toothcare seems to be around fancier electric brushes or other gadgets, but regardless we’ve never been able to move away from ‘brush for 2 minutes’. I want some fancy device I just bite down on and it zaps my whole mouth clean in 5 seconds.
Please re read the question and ask yourself if you have anything to add to this thread before posting again.
You cant say, this happens to me, all the time, but i dont keep score so i cant give any one specific example. I remember that it happens all the time but i dont remember one single instance of it happening.
This makes you either a liar or a compulsive liar from anyone elses perspective.
I’ve known people like you, this one guy who could play piano until he told me, an actual pianist, then suddenly his piano was at his aunties who lived 3 hours away so he didnt play much anymore. His aunty, who in a different lie lived only 30 minutes away. The same guy could fly an 8 passenger plane. But in a separate lie he could fly a 12 passenger plane.
See how easy that was? I made a statement/claim that i knew people like you. Then i backed it up with a specific example instead of being vague and annoying, pretending i couldn’t remember any specific examples.
What you are doing right now is called projection. You observe one aspect I have in common with someone else and declare I must be like them in other ways. Does that sound logically valid to you?
You suggested I reread the OP question. Here it is: “Have you ever seen a Rudolph moment happen in real life?”
Sounds like a yes or no question to me. My answer is yes, but you already knew that.
I never said I could play piano or fly a plane. But I can get people in a room to reveal whether they’re a Rudolph or a black-nosed reindeer. You’ve established you’d rather put someone down than entertain they might have special skills. Sorry bud, you’re not a Rudolph, and I don’t know if that’s something you can change.
That’s not exactly the classical definition of projection. At least in psychology, it’s not.
Either way, what i did was not projection by your terms or the real definition. It was an accusation. One you have yet to disprove.
When you quote OPs question, you are leaving out a large amount of context, like the fact that they then shared an entire story of their own. Doing this creates an implication that everyone else here understood, which was to share your own story.
If by asking the question OP only required a yes or no, then this thread would just be a bunch of people saying yes and no… and that is clearly not what was intended. So please dont be so disingenuous.
I don’t remember saying that you claimed to be able to play piano or fly a plane. Im sure you know that, and i may be misunderstanding an attempt by you to put me down, which would be fairly ironic considering its at the point that you attempt to put me down you are accusing me of doing the same.
So i dont really care if you think im not “a rudolph.” All i really care about is that you still haven’t backed up your claim. Despite being so adamant that you have “special skills”. Just back up your claims or keep your yes/no out of this clear request for elaboration. Because its not helpful and it makes you look like a dick.
I just remind myself that I once thought it was a good idea to make an entire thanksgiving dinner for 3 people using a college dorm kitchen, and then the idea of frying a cheese sandwich doesn’t seem that daunting.
Tip though for grilled cheese is butter the pan not the bread.
Seriously it’s the perfect way to do it. You know your pan is hot enough. The butter is nicely browned. I do find a small pan is the right way to keep a good layer but if you have a slightly larger pan using a spatula to keep the butter contained to one space and then put in the grilled cheese while the butter’s still a little solid works too. It’s probably been more than a decade since I last buttered the bread not the pan and I’m not even 30 it’s just the best way.
