Rayuza, in Who doesn't use an adblocker and why?

I use my usual addons like privacy badger, Ghostery, ublock and Tampermonkey to get rid of the annoying “disable your adblocker” message on youtube.

InterSynth,
@InterSynth@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

You only need uBlock Origin for all that.

Bigoldmustard, in What's the best approach/pathway to learning iOS development?

Sign up for a dev account and check out some of apple’s free resources while you wait, then do whatever the actually smart people on here tell you to do.

corsicanguppy, in How would you feel/react if your home address was announced & published very publicly the same way celebrities experience?

We called it a phone book.

WhyJiffie,

Fortunately that’s optional

calypsopub,

Exactly. As a Boomer who grew up in a small town with telephone “party lines” I just can’t be arsed to care. Come look in my windows if you need a thrill.

LucasWaffyWaf, in What hobby do you have that no one else in your family shares?

I collect mid-2000s PDAs!

pastermil,

Oh hey! I collect somewhat vintage computing stuff as well! Mainly Thinkpads. What I found the most challenging would be finding replacement parts, especially batteries. How do you go about yours?

LucasWaffyWaf, (edited )

Batteries are easy to get thanks to Cameron Sino! They make brand new batteries for old devices from cameras to PDAs.

As for parts, depends! Some you can easily find broken/untested units for cheap to grab parts off of. Others like my daily driver, the Sony Clié PEG-UX50 (It even flips around to hide the keyboard!), is rarer since it was top of the top of the line, and therefore wicked expensive ($700! Today that’s worth $1,200!) Working units can be found but command high prices, and it needs a special dingus cradle for charging. Without the cradle, you can’t charge as it doesn’t take USB power.

A lot of the time, untested units usually just need a new battery and they kick right back on. Every untested device I’ve bought was much cheaper than working, and one fresh battery later it starts right up.

netburnr,
@netburnr@lemmy.world avatar

I used to work at a computer store back then, there were so many (shittty) options for pda and mo3 players back then

LucasWaffyWaf,

Oh yeah, there’s definitely a reason why the iPhone took off so well lol

How do you collect personal displays of affection from 20 years ago?

I'm guessing photos!

LucasWaffyWaf,

Ah nah, Personal Digital Assistants! They’re basically Smartphones with half the smart and none of the phone. Pocketable computers that do a lot of what modern phones can do - but worse because it’s 20+ year old tech.

Rhynoplaz,

Walking in with your Newton, acting like you own the place!

paddirn, in What hobby do you have that no one else in your family shares?

Boardgaming, kind of sort of. I think the other family households have some boardgames in their houses, like the usual ones that most people have, but I’ve got a boardgame and ttrpg collection that I’ve sunk thousands of dollars into worth of games and shelving for. It’s just on a different level.

Rhynoplaz,

Khrux, (edited ) in What are some dark sides to cute super-powers ?

A lot of people have read this question to mean the accurate scientific implications of everyday superpowers which isn’t really in the spirit of superpowers. I’ll try to say powers that feel generally altruistic or built for cute characters that have cruel implications.

Healing us the classic cute superpower, but if the user of the power chooses to overheal somebody they could probably cause basically mega cancer.

It’s pretty easy to imagine the the implications of controlling animals, and it’s a pretty good power to sit in the background as a utility power until the user decides to have every insect, rat and pigeon in the city bombard somebody.

The ability to share memories is hard to be used villainously but two fucked applications would be to beam somebody’s traumatic experience I to somebody else’s head (or an experience that happened to one person that could trigger someone else’s PTSD), or if the user has trained themselves to be able to alter their memories to fictional events on demand, turning what is basically a truth finding superpower into an abuse of perceived honesty.

Finally the superpower of using Reddit and Lemmy your whole life and generating a very standard way if responding but having the cruel and unusual twist of always sounding like fucking ChatGPT.

Chetzemoka,

The power of healing could be used to infinitely torture someone without killing them. Definitely has a dark side.

All power must be applied ethically

Fades, (edited )

The heal to cancer ratio is a perfect example, deepens the power itself too instead of being a superficial “you’re fixed now!” vibe

NoiseColor, in What has been the best thing that has happened to you so far?

Psychedelics, wife, kid, finding a fun job, realising my parents are kind of assholes and I wasn’t such a bad kid.

Dozzi92,
@Dozzi92@lemmy.world avatar

Plus one to psychedelics. They helped me explore myself and my relationship with others. Let me lower the walls, empathize. Been a while since the first time, may have gone a little hard in the paint with them at first, but now it’s one time a year just to remember everything.

Anticorp, in Did any coal-in-your-stocking type of things happen to you on Christmas Day?

Oh boy, you’re about to learn a lesson in humility and perseverance.

LemmyKnowsBest, (edited )

What? About the ants? This is nothing. I’ve been through hell and back a million times over much worse things.

Anticorp,

Yeah, the ants. Maybe they just followed a scent trail into your house and live far away. If that’s the case then it’ll be easy. A couple of addresses ago we had a fire ant colony living under our foundation. Nothing we did got rid of them. Even powerful poisons that they take back to the colony only worked for a week or two until the next round hatched and they were right back. It sucked! Best of luck! Hopefully they live far away.

Mr_Blott, in Hot tub owners: any tips? any regrets?

I actually look after them for idiots that install them for rentals.

No1 - Use bromine because it smells less than chlorine

No2 use multi bromine as it has anti algae and anti foam in it

No3 keep the pH correct, about 7.2 to 7.4, same as pool

No4 clean the filter every week

No5 kids love hot tubs, hot tubs HATE kids

No6 FUCKIN SHOWER BEFORE YOU USE IT YOU DAFT CUNT NO WONDER IT TURNED INTO FUCKING SOUP FUCK ME

LemmyKnowsBest,

everything makes sense to me except “hot tubs hate kids.” Please explain what happened

Steveanonymous,
@Steveanonymous@lemmy.world avatar

Kids are dirty oily greaseballs and they don’t shower before going in

LemmyKnowsBest, (edited )

I would argue that prepubescent kids are not as greasy and oily as adults are, and although EVERYONE should shower before getting into jacuzzi, practically NOBODY does unless they are forced to do so and/or extremely fastidious about it.

Telodzrum,

So . . . Linux users?

Mr_Blott,

Adults get in the tub, relax and drink a G&T

Kids tend to jump in and out, dragging all the crap from the decking/patio with them each time

Plus they’ll just piss in it, rather than getting out 😂

Tolstoy, in Who doesn't use an adblocker and why?
@Tolstoy@lemmy.world avatar

By default I’m using adblocker but when I notice I’m visiting a new site more frequently like wikis for games, I disable it and keep it off if the site is usable.

lustrum,

I need to start doing this more. I just forget

hemko,

if the site is usable

Unfortunately most of them are in Fandom so that’s a big no.

DLSantini, (edited ) in What's a food you love, that isn't worth making from scratch?

Chinese food. The common fast food type here in the US. Yeah, I can spend a bunch of time, work, and money to make orange chicken, boneless spare ribs, crab rangoon, teriyaki, coconut shrimp, and pork fried rice. Or, I can go 5 minutes up the street, and pay my favorite restaurant $20 for a big plate with all of that, with absolutely no work on my part, and it all tastes way better.

AgentGrimstone, (edited )

I really tried but I just can’t cook it right. Those youtube chefs videos make it look so easy and make a lot less to clean up than I do.

ericbomb,

Ugh yes.

Also some of that stuff is more expensive to make at home.

AngryCommieKender,

First time, can be. After that not so much. I’m cheating making my own five spice and having about a decade and a half experience in Chinese kitchens, so I know their recipes.

ElderWendigo,

I agree with everything on your list except the fried rice. True, If you’re trying to recreate the take away recipe exactly from scratch you’re going to have a bad time. But, with a big pan (if you don’t have a wok) that you can get real hot it’s just a leftovers dish. Leftover rice, leftover protein, frozen veggies, egg, vegetable oil, and soy sauce. It’s not usually worth my time unless I already have the leftovers. The hardest part is not over loading your pan with ingredients or oil. You’ve also got to have everything ready when you start because it all comes together very fast if the pan is hot enough. Sure, I probably still can’t beat the economy of scale of the restaurant, but the point is that I’m using up my own leftovers instead of throwing them out.

Zoboomafoo,
@Zoboomafoo@lemmy.world avatar

leftover rice

I do not know of which you speak

hydrospanner,

I had to laugh when I read this, since it’s apparently impossible for me to make the correct amount of rice for a meal. I’ve never once in my life not had leftover rice haha.

For me, it usually becomes tomorrow’s breakfast: reheated in the pot on the stove with a bit of water, then put it in a bowl, crack a raw egg on it, and drizzle with soy sauce and sprinkle on a few toasted sesame seeds.

tooclose104, in So, who or what ruined Christmas this year?
