radix, in Does "Rock music is evil / of the devil" have racist roots?
@radix@lemmy.world avatar

Tangential to the question, but Elvis was famously censored from the waist down in an early TV appearance for being too sexy. Then, of course, lots and lots of rock in the ‘free love’ 60s and 70s was explicitly about drugs.

Going from ‘sex and drugs’ to ‘of the devil’ is a pretty short line to draw for some people.

TwanHE, in What is your best story when you were in a foreign country?

I was out camping in Slovenia with the scouts. We stayed in podljubelj and met an older guy (friend our campground owner, important for later) that did tours through the redstone mines and abandoned buildings in the mountains. The tour was to take 3 hours and it cost €15 cash only, so we did a quick calculation of how much we needed and got it from the atm just before the tour started.

We had a great time and got some cool memories climbing down a abandoned mineshafts and lifts while this guy was terrified for our lives😅 So the tour concludes and we go to pay him, and he almost fell over backwards when we handed him €200 which was the price we calculated + a small tip.

Turns out the €15 wasn’t per person but instead a flat rate no matter the group size. Fucking €15 for guiding a group of 12 idiots for 3 hours.

We ended up having intense negotiations with the guy for how much he was willing to take. In the end we managed to convince him to take €100 from us and we ended up giving the other €100 to our campground owner who would make sure his stubborn friend didn’t turn down “free” money.

I still can’t believe that tour was meant to be just €15

TwinTusks,
@TwinTusks@bitforged.space avatar

Lets convert. Currently Euro to CNY (Chinese) is 7.78.

€15 for 3 hours is 116.7CNY, that is 38 CNY/hour, that is mighty high even in China today where the average salary is about 3-4K CNY.

Got “mugged” in Amsterdam.

It was our last day in the city and had our backpacks on walking around like tourists in the wrong part of town. A crackhead saw us walking towards him and he stood up, pulled something out of his pocket and then walked directly into me. 100% on purpose.

He then very dramatically threw what I now knew was a crack pipe against the alley wall and yelled at me, “You stupid fucking American. You broke my crack pipe. You owe me crack! There was $15 worth of crack in that pipe!” I wasn’t having any of that, this was obviously a setup. I was about to kick his scrawny crackhead ass when he pulled out a tiny, I mean tiny little pocket knife at which point my buddy started laughing his ass off. Right before I was about to knock the hell out of this guy, one of the locals came up pulled on my collar whispered in my ear, “Just throw some change on the ground. You’re a foreigner. You will be the one to go to jail.”

I thought that was reasonable so I pulled about 75 cents worth of euros out of my pocket and threw it on the ground. At that point the alleged mugger got into a huge fist fight with about five other crackheads while they fought over the change I threw on the ground. They completely forgot about me and my friend so we just walked away. What was really funny was later that day we were in a different part of the town near the train station waiting for our train to the airport. That same motherfucker walks by looking for a target and I had to think real long and hard about what I was going to do. In the end I said fuck it and just left it alone.

On that same trip we went through Luxembourg. We were looking at the sites and there’s this big valley in the middle of the city with a park at the bottom and we were standing on this bridge filming and this guy just jumps off and falls at least 100 maybe 200 ft to his death. Me and my friend are freaking out and cannot believe we just saw somebody kill themselves. We are yelling for help and some guy who obviously lived there casually walks up and tells us, “First time here? This happens all the time. Luxembourg is a very fucking depressing place to live.” Then he just casually walked on. We couldn’t believe that shit. It was so run of the mill everyday business, nothing for these people. Just another guy had thrown himself off the suicide bridge. No biggie.

Z4rK, in Which YouTuber still creates high-quality videos to this day?

I’m late but a couple I didn’t see mentioned:

BeardMeetsFood - funny guy doing eating challenges, never thought I could like this kind of content, and the only one I watch in this category

Itchy Boots - Amazing travel videos from a Dutch girl riding her motorcycle through remote places on all continents. Very positive meetings with people all over the earth to give you back hope for humanity.

Nikolai Schirmer - Ridiculously high quality alpine skiing videos, mostly from Norway. Fantastic story telling and nature combined with too steep skiing. Shouldn’t be possible to get this quality for free.

Expedition Evans - very enjoyable videos of sailboat life for a couple and their two dogs.

Beau Miles - best story teller I know of. Adventurer that mostly make videos about local projects where he’s doing something that involves running very long while philosophizing about interesting topics.

Harry Mack - the most insane freestyle rapper ever, usually makes content on the spot for people on the street or online.

Sheena Melwani - Whenever I need a laugh. Her husband Trid is hilarious. Short videos of them laughing and joking basically.

Iron Chef Dad - wholesome videos with his son, for example making gourmet out of fast food.

Galdoc’s Tutorials - great DevBlog content from making a Factorio mod. Development, debugging, designing, Blender. Fairly technical. Great voice.

Stuff Made Here - great engineering channel, makes crazy contraptions like a moving basket hoop you’ll always hit, a hair cutting robot, auto-aiming bow etc.

whofearsthenight, (edited ) in Is it just my circle, or has it been a challenge getting into the Christmas/holiday spirit the last couple of years?

So it’s felt like this to me basically since I became an adult. For one, I work in an industry where the holidays mean nothing. And two, now I have adult shit to do, so there isn’t a ton of time to just sit around baking and watching Christmas specials and what not. Also can’t really stand the consumerist side of things and while I do like giving gifts as a thing, I don’t like the idea of “just buy some shit” or “whoever gets the most presents wins.”

Now all that said, when I think back to what used to make the holidays special for me, I realized that was adults deliberately making the holidays special. And the shitty thing about being an adult (unless your SO is like, from the Clause family) is that you kind of have to do that for yourself, and you’re probably going to have to do boring adult shit to make that happen. Like, you might literally be putting something like “Bake cookies/Watch ‘The Grinch’” into your calendar. There is a lot of little things you can do as well - play some music, get some scented candles, stick a bowl of decorative pinecones out, etc.

I think this also helps a lot with other people, or in my case, my kids. I don’t have a ton of friends (I’m very much a person with a small circle, but all people i know I can call if i need help moving if that makes sense) but we do some small get togethers. With my kids, I try to do more of the things that make things feel special for them. Lights on the house I could take or leave (back to being lazy) but I do my best and I put them up, even though it was just a few days ago because that was the first day that wasn’t pouring where I was at home when it was light out. I make it a point to watch some Christmas movies (and let the kids come to a consensus on which) and bake some cookies or whatever. We usually go every year to that neighborhood where every house has cool lights, even if that is an hour drive away. Lots of little things like that.

Anyway, I feel like the holidays are very much a “fake it til you make it” scenario. I tend to think about it like “what do I remember that I liked about holidays” when I was a kid, and then force myself to do those things. What I’ve generally found is that there are definitely times I’ve regretted not doing anything like that, but I never regret when I forced myself to do something like this, and I rarely remember the “forced” part.

bibliotectress,

This is the most real advice I’ve seen on Lemmy. It really fucking sucked realizing that no one was going to make things special for me (mostly because I hated the realization that I was expecting someone/something else to make my life more fun). Celebrating holidays and doing seasonal things that are special for the time of year REALLY help break up the monotony of the grind of everyday life (work, kids, bills, house work, ad nauseum). It would be nice to have someone else create that magic for me, but… that doesn’t really happen as an adult. You have to make things fun for yourself, and for others if you can.

CaptKoala,

Stop waiting for a single (or a couple) days of the year to put effort in for enjoyment, do it every damn day.

siipale,

That’s a nice purple! I like all sorts of purples too but I couldn’t pick the one I like the most. I like anything from lavender to kind of red wine color. Not sure if they’re all even considered to be purple as they are little more red.

tiredofsametab, in Why aren't modern 3D platformers as good as the PS2 era of 3D platformers?

My hot-take answer was going to be that it's all nostalgia and there haven't really been any good ones (at least that I ever was aware of). Given your edit on nostalgia, maybe it's not nostalgia for an individual game or games, but rather a a time and a style?

Seeing movies in the theater is overrated and they are far more enjoyable at home.

stackPeek,
@stackPeek@lemmy.world avatar

I watched The Batman on IMAX on my birthday, although I was just a bit disappointed with the quality of the projector, I was mind blown by the audio!!! The audio on the chase scene especially!!!

Underwaterbob,

I agree with this to a point. It depends on your set up at home, vs whether or not you get decent seats at a theater and how crowded it is. I saw “Dune” from great seats in a mostly empty theater, and I don’t think any home set up could compare. I also watched “It Follows” at home late at night on a decent TV while my family was away, and I can’t imagine a better way to experience that one.

some_designer_dude,

If it weren’t for the popcorn and those cool Coke vending machines with seemingly infinite flavours, there would be zero draw at all for me. And even then, I haven’t been in years. Both of things cost about the same as a ticket, and I feel like an idiot paying 3000% markup for it in public.

VaultBoyNewVegas,

I’ve ibd so going to the cinema means I’ll inevitably miss at least 5 minutes every time my bowels want to be a bitch. At least watching movies at home I can pause the damn thing and I don’t miss things.

golli, (edited )

For me it depends. Some movies benefit more from the big screen than others. For example I went to see both Avatar movies in the cinema since those specifically shine because of their effects. With many other movies I agree that a good home cinema leaves little to be desired.

The other reason why I sometimes like the cinema experience is because it forces me to pay more attention and not get distracted. That might be a self-discipline issue, but this way i don’t randomly pick up my phone or similar. itespecially helps me appreciate longer slow movies more. For example something like “drive my car” (almost 3h long) that I glad I caught in the cinema when it came out

afunkysongaday, in What could my upstairs neighbor possibly be doing to make this much noise?

Did you already tell them there is a problem with the floor dampening and you hear every step very loudly? Surely you would not just expect them to know that they are not supposed to walk around in their own apartment and instead of talking to them tell everyone on the internet how bad they are? Because that would be pathetic.

NightAuthor,

My confrontation avoidance is pathetic, I’m working on it in therapy along w my generalized anxiety and other things.

But on the other hand, loud neighbors is a common issue in apartments, whether intentional or not… and idk, I just automatically try not to make a shit load of noise out of courtesy. Though, I’ve just recently learned that that behavior may be a byproduct of anxiety.

Also, it’s not as if I named and shamed them. There’s virtually no details about them at all.

It’s astonishing what kind of annoying asocial behavior people sometimes show while being absolutely unaware! We are all caught in our own stories sometimes and don’t always have good awareness of our sourrounding. The way you describe the situation it sounds like yes, they should be aware that they are loud, but it’s still very likely that they just aren’t! We’ve all been there!

Mine is that I can’t stand the Deadpool movies. They are self aware and self referential to an obnoxious degree.

I haven’t read the comic books that they’re based on for a long time, but as I recall, they also break the fourth wall. I don’t think that that was introduced specifically for the movie.

googles

Apparently that wasn’t always there:

screenrant.com/deadpool-fourth-wall-break-first-t…

When Did Deadpool First Break The Fourth Wall?

Marvel’s Deadpool is known for his over-the-top violence and crude and crass humor, but perhaps his best-known character trait is his penchant for repeatedly breaking the fourth wall. Deadpool talks to the audience in comics, films and videogames - but he didn’t always have this power. In fact, early Deadpool was known for being quite serious and firmly rooted in the fictional realm…so when did the Merc with a Mouth first break the fourth wall - and how did he insult editors everywhere by doing so?

Deadpool and the assassin with superhuman accuracy Bullseye teamed up in previous issues, and in Deadpool , the two are reunited after a long absence. “How long has it been!?” Bullseye exclaims. Deadpool simply states “Issue sixteen.” It’s the smallest of fourth-wall breaks (he hadn’t even began speaking to the readers yet), but it shows that Deadpool is doing more than acting out - he’s acting as his own editor. Considering convoluted comics continuity, it’s normal for editors to occasionally place footnotes in certain panels, specifically when characters reference past events. Perhaps Kelly and Woods considered the old method, but wanted to try a new technique. Whatever their reasoning, Deadpool’s fourth wall breaks became a staple of the character.

Looks like Deadpool dates to 1997, though, so Deadpool breaking the fourth wall has been around for over a quarter of a century.

tarmac,

I don’t think it’s OPs point that the movie did it first, just that it was annoying in the movie. And they’re right.

ryathal,

The whole point of Deadpool is the self awareness though. You can find it annoying, it’s not for everyone, but it’s true to what the character has become.

meathorse,

The way I had it explained to me by a friend who’s into his comics (I’m not a comic reader) is that his regen abilities + cancer basically damaged his brain and made him insane which is why he “thinks” he’s a comic book/movie hero. Not so much that he’s breaking the 4th wall but that he’s talking at it like a crazy person. He even has multiple personalities that I wish they’d introduced in DP2! It was hinted at when he’s reunited with Vanessa in DP1 when he says “and now the moment I’ve all been waiting for”
