ElderWendigo, in Can anyone recommend terrible horror films?

Orgy of the Dead starts off like it’s going to be your standard weird bad Ed Wood horror movie. We get to meet Criswell, who you might recognize as inspiration for a character in Fright Night among others. There’s also an Elvira type character before Elvira did it better. But then suddenly it’s just a topless woman go-go dancing in a fake graveyard. The whole thing suddenly feels like an softcore porn parody of a Gilligan’s Island episode. The scene ends, and you might think “Gee, maybe they’ll move on to a different location or move the plot along somehow?” Nope, you get a short narration scene and then the next woman comes out with a slightly different costume and dance, still topless though. That scene ends and you think “Well they can’t possibly do that again, so maybe now the ‘plot’ will move along.” Nope! More narration, and another topless dancing woman. By the third girl I was bored. But it was funny again with the fourth. With the fifth woman, I gritted my teeth and thought, “When will this end?” But, by the seventh dancing topless woman it was hilarious. Each one of these dancing girls was almost identical, just slightly different slutty costumes and music. At some point they introduce a Zombie and a Wolf man character to leer at the women along with jerk boyfriend and scared girl tied to a post. After it was clear that the ninth topless dancing girl was the last, I felt immense relief and raised a glass to that mad genius Criswell. Those 92 minutes felt like days. This is not a movie to watch sober and alone during the day.

slazer2au, in What's the best response to someone who believes in hard determinism but also uses this to deny responsibility for any immoral actions they commit?

There isn’t, someone set in their ways like that won’t change so don’t bother trying.

Just pitty them because anything they accomplish was not because they tried.

randombullet, in Would you say enthusiast grade or business grade products are better quality?

I always try to buy more enterprise hardware such as SSDs and HDDs.

They’re usually cheaper used because of their lifecycle.

I just bought 2 x 3.83TB nvme drives for $160 a pop.

They have 5.4PB of endurance and I received them with only 60TB written.

Same goes for hard drives. I have some Seagate exos that is just about $10/TB.

They have a MTBF of 2.5 million hours.

RepulsiveDog4415, in At what point is violence on a large scale justified?

My understanding of history is that most improvements in living standarts have been bought by violence or the threat of it against the ruling class (yes, i guess you could call me a commie).

Though i also feel like it is a bit of a dice roll. Kinda like rerolling a dice and hoping you get a higher number. The higher your starting number the higher the chance you end up with a lower number. Does that make sense to anyone or have i completely detached from reality here? :D

nyar,

Not detached. No rights have ever been won under capitalism through a peace movement alone.

No, not the US Civil Rights Movement.

No, not the fall off apartheid in S.A.

No, not even the independence movement in India.

All has peace movements. All also had organizations that engaged in actions of violence against their oppressors. To ignore that is ahistorical.

Fogle, in What popular quote are you tired of hearing?

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different result. And as far as I can tell Einstein never said it but it’s always attributed to Einstein

If I just rolled a 6 I’m not going to expect the same result if I roll the die again.

fadingembers, in Opinions: What is a movie you genuinely like, that is rated below 60% on rotten tomatoes?
@fadingembers@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Titan A.E. only got a 50% and it is incredible and still holds up!

GrayBackgroundMusic,

Only 50%?! Holy crap! I guess they really don’t wanna live on Planet Bob.

MajorHavoc,

“You can’t name a planet Bob.”

UnfortunateDoorHinge, in What from reddit do you hope to never see on lemmy?

/r/MadeMeSmile portrayed toxic positivity which felt out of touch with reality.

cooopsspace,

(Eight year old provides free healthcare in a first world nation that doesn’t have universal healthcare for some reason.)

boonhet,

Honestly, with ADHD, that can be pretty normal. One day you forget to make your bed and suddenly boom, it’s been 14 years since the last time you did it. Good habits die so easily because they give no pleasant hormones and bad habits come so easily because they give you reward hormones.

I honestly make my bed a couple of times a year. Also there’s a theory that not making your bed is actually healthier because it doesn’t create a warm, moist environment under the blanket for shit to grow in, so I use that as an excuse. But really, I just forget it all the time and don’t care too much.

Son_of_dad, in What stupid injury left a long lasting impact on you?

I was pretending to be a monster and started chasing my toddler around the apartment as she giggled. She ran into a room and as I ran after her, I stubbed my toes on the door frame. Instant break of the two outer toes, hurt like hell and had to go to the hospital. That was a decade ago and during fall and winter, I still get a lot of throbbing, dull pain on my toes.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

I considered myself a person who didn’t get random injuries. When I had kids, I got bruised up a lot from chasing them around and rough housing. Definitely have a funny pain in my right arm that hasn’t gone away.

solitaire, in How do you deal with the thought of having to work for 40+ years and then when/if you retire, you're too old to do much?
@solitaire@infosec.pub avatar

I’ve pretty consistently chosen less hours and better working conditions over pay since I started to have that choice. It’s made it a lot more tolerable. I’m currently on a four day week, with a minimal commute, good perks and a relatively stress free job that I took a pay cut for. My retirement savings look pretty slim, but due to my health the chance of a long one isn’t much higher anyway.

Not without it’s issues. Pay is pretty significantly below the median. Fortunately I’m not interested in having kids and I’m content living cheaply, even if it sounds boring. But I’m in a weird dead zone for government support; for instance - if I earned more, there are programs for “middle income” housing and the like that I earn too little to qualify for. Low income housing programs are a joke - with wait times being as much as a decade -but even if it wasn’t I’m not high priority anyway. Also no way on earth I’m ever getting a home loan, even though mortgage repayments would be less than rent and I could conceivably make the deposit.

Was just talking about how difficult work is going to make the next three days, so that I can’t wait until they’re over, but that’s another week of my life where I’m wishing for days to pass so I can try to be happy again. Lame. Lame as fuck.

corsicanguppy,

If you don’t enjoy your job, try to change it. I don’t love my job, but I like it; and the people are so great that it’s a good fit. We still have to work, so make it something you don’t loathe.

Ainiriand, in How are you all making it right now with grocery store prices?

Fortunately for us we make a lot of money so we don’t look at prices.

blad314,

Same here.

intensely_human, in When someone says "kiss my ass" does it refer to the hole or the cheek?

Well, normal ass-kissing is the cheek. A true brown-noser, though, takes it too far.

Oscar the Grouch.

Kedly, in Am I the only one getting agitated by the word AI?

People keep saying this, but AI has been used for subroutines nowhere near actual artificial intelligence since at LEAST as long as video games have existed

Skyhighatrist,

Much much longer than that. The term has been used since AI began as a field of study in the 50s. And it’s never referred to human level intelligence. Sure, that was the goal, but all of the different sub branches of AI are still AI. Whether it’s expert systems, LLMs, decision trees, etc, etc, etc. AI is a broad term that covers the entire spectrum, and always has been. People that complain about it just want AI to only refer to AGI, which already has a term. AGI.
