brokenlcd, in What prevents you from going to bed early?

The fact it’s the only time of day i can hear my thoughts without needing to think about studying; or if the situation is dire, because i’m studying

IronKrill, (edited ) in Are there any good Aniyomi alternatives?

I don’t know, I just use Aniyomi because it’s working fine. When making a request like this it helps to know why you want to switch and what features you need so that people can recommend something you want, because it’s unlikely for apps to share every single feature. i.e are you looking for local playback, manga reading, tracking integration, extension support, so on and so forth.

Asudox,
@Asudox@lemmy.world avatar

It’s not really that I dislike Aniyomi or want to change it. I just got curious and wanted to know if any alternatives exist.

mnemonicmonkeys,

There’s a spiritual successor to Tachiyomi called Mihon that’s supposed to launch in a week or so. It’s being worked on by the same guy that runs the TachiyomiSY fork

Thanks.

Reverendender, in What really popular movie or TV show have you never seen?

The Lion King. Beauty and the Beast. Frozen.

GoT because I’d read the first two books and got bored of a medieval soap opera where the writer substitutes misery porn for a plot.

Breaking Bad because Bryan Cranston vaguely irritates me (I don’t know why, I’m sure he’s a lovely man).

Zombie related stuff because seriously, it was non-stop shit zombie movies for almost a decade and I’m bored of it. It’s just become another lazy trope. Exception: Zombieland.

neidu2,

Everything I’ve seen and heard indicates that he is in fact a wonderful person. But I’m not going to argue with you, because I have such an intense hatred for Hugh Grant and Richard Gere. And I don’t have a rational explanation as to why.

GadgetGirlOz, in What really popular movie or TV show have you never seen?

Harry Potter movie series and Lord Of The Rings movie series. Never seen any of them.

Breaking Bad.

alt_feed,

I started watching this in 2022. Just picked it up again last november, I like the show but it’s too heavy for me. I need a break after a couple of episodes. I like it enough to pick it up again but it really feels heavy for me.

HootinNHollerin,

Last 2 seasons are fucking epic

Thorny_Insight, in What really popular movie or TV show have you never seen?

I haven’t seen Interstellar yet. It’s probably the biggest one though i don’t really watch movies or tv series much anyway so I haven’t seen almost anything recent. Also Godfather, Friends, Reservoir Dogs …

Stovetop, (edited ) in Where can a Boomer catch up on current computer/software technology?

Based on your needs, I think it would be best to avoid Linux as an operating system which people will likely try to steer you towards here. A lot of commercial/CAD software will likely be Windows-only and it’s not worth trying to set up a compatibility layer and troubleshooting issues when they pop up.

If you’re looking for a reliable laptop, I can say Lenovo and Dell are generally reliable. If you wanted to go the Apple hardware I also don’t think you could go wrong with a Macbook if you can afford it, which you could install Windows or any other OS on if you need to.

I have a work-issued Dell laptop which can take a beating and is okay, albeit a bit old at this point and due for a replacement. I have a Macbook Pro that I bought in 2013 and is still going strong, but 11 years later is feeling its age. And I have an MSI gaming laptop which is powerful, but I am not sure is going to survive another couple years.

If you want to go the desktop route, you have a lot more flexibility when it comes to specs and you have the advantage of not having all your components on a single board, so that way down the road if a component fails or you want to add more RAM or add more storage space, you can pretty much swap anything out instead of replacing the entire unit. I don’t know if there’s a “Build a PC” community here on Lemmy but if you take a look at the requirements for the software you want to use and look around the internet for builds that meet those requirements, it will help give an idea of what components you might want to buy.

Not to mention, of course, that Dell and the like will also sell prebuilt desktops with hardware you’re looking for, albeit with a bit of a markup.

just_ducky_in_NH,

Thanks!

Lemmy, reddit, find groups (but even those are far from full proof) sadly the internet as a hole is now a corporate marketing suspit. Learn what you can about the core components of computing, look at spec sheets rather than reviews (reviews can be coloured by bias, the publisher may want to stay in the good graces of the manufacture or is just ill informed) although reviews can be helpful and not coloured.

Knowledge is power.

Ross_audio, (edited ) in What is this wire for?

Some manufacturers use standard audio connectors to carry just plain power.

They’re robust and can carry relatively high current and voltage.

It works, I can see why they get used. After all RCAs are on everything for everything.

I have an e-bike that uses an XLR as a charging port for the battery.

There’s an IR led on a cable with a 3.5mm jack somewhere that’s an extender for my home cinema system remote.

(That might be what this is, so see if your phone camera can see the IR light from a TV remote and then test it with that thing)

This possible LED plugged into something either home made/bespoke, very old, or Chinese.

Small chance it’s from some medical or scientific equipment that hasn’t moved with the times.

If it’s an LED put a DC voltage down that plug. If it’s a light sensor, measure for a DC voltage.

Audio AC signals didn’t have an effect so it’s probably a DC component.

My bet, point your phone camera at it and put a DC voltage down there in the right direction and you’ll see IR light come out.

It might be the receiver. In which case you need to monitor voltage. Then point a TV remote at it.

Mango,

Ah yeah I didn’t think they’d find this as amusing as others would.

ItsYourBoyHalo, in Physicists of Lemmy, what is up?
@ItsYourBoyHalo@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t understand why people are downvoting this, but up, down, left, right all depend on your frame of reference.

Up in space is nowhere, but at the same time it is everywhere. Those are not physical concepts and they require necessarily a frame of reference to even make sense.

Mango,

Ok. Frame of reference is half way between here and Andromeda!

ItsYourBoyHalo,
@ItsYourBoyHalo@lemmy.world avatar

That doesn’t really tell me anything, haha

Mango,

And I’m facing South.

ItsYourBoyHalo,
@ItsYourBoyHalo@lemmy.world avatar

Dude, North, South, East and West are not real either. Again, you need a frame of reference. Those are 100% arbitrary.

Mango,

I can’t tell if you’re taking me seriously or not. 🤣

ItsYourBoyHalo,
@ItsYourBoyHalo@lemmy.world avatar

I am. “Halfway” is not a frame of reference. You need to arbitrarily define what up and down is. North and South is.

Mango,

Why would it be arbitrary there? It’s not arbitrary here.

fin, in Physicists of Lemmy, what is up?
Ghostie21, in Physicists of Lemmy, what is up?

Up is what you define as up in your coordinates.

Mango,

So up is pretend?

Ghostie21,

No, up is what you define as up.

Mango,

I define up as yo momma.
