Signtist, in How to respond to gf saying "I'm fat"

That depends heavily on who she is, and what your relationship looks like; a lighthearted response might work best for one person, while launching into a serious discussion about body image might be best for another.

My go-to response when my wife says something bad about her body is to just respond with “You’re beautiful.” and leave it at that. Sometimes I throw in a “Hey, don’t talk about my wife like that!” for good measure.

ScaredDuck, (edited ) in What is a nifty little feature modern gadgets have lost?

My current Xiaomi phone has an IR blaster, but what I miss is having an IR receiver as well, trying 100 random remotes to find which one works with your obscure TV/AC is such a pain when you used to be able to just clone one instead.

Rechargable bat-trees, the headphone jack, nugget shaped phones (ie. BlackBerry Bold much), and the damn hardware keyboard >:(((

Whoever has the best chance at breaking into the capital district and killing Trump. Next question.

Moobythegoldensock, in Should I wait for the "Snyder cut" (director's cut) of Rebel Moon?

As someone who generally likes Snyder’s movies but didn’t particularly care for Rebel Moon, it’s hard to say. The movie is both too long and too short. It’s too long in that the middle of the film drags and there are unnecessary scenes that definitely should have been cut (such as most of the scenes with the soldiers at the beginning of the film and the ending of the bird scene.) It’s too short in that most of the characters feel undeveloped and it’s hard to get emotionally invested in the climax.

I feel like some of the fight scenes, particularly an early one involving an axe, could use the extra blood effects from the R cut. It just felt really bland with cutaway clean kills, and kind of undermines the movie’s gritty tone with more fantasy violence. Later fights in the movie use more fantasy elements (like laser weapons) and these are fine without the blood effects.

Reportedly the R cut will have at least 40 extra minutes, which may really help flesh out the plot. I’d especially like it if the scene where Kora recites her character bio to the camera is cut and replaced with scenes showing us all those things, but that’s unlikely. More likely, some characters will be more fleshed out, but also a bunch of extraneous stuff will be added as well. Neither will likely fix the underlying core of the film that’s essentially Seven Samurai meets Star Wars, but does neither particularly well.

If you are going to watch it, I would probably wait for the extended cut, though it’s hard to tell whether there will be much, if any, improvement.

Lafari,

So it’s overly long and misuses its time. Wow.

Moobythegoldensock,

That’s Zach Snyder in general. The only way to really watch his films are extended cuts, because the theatrical cuts tend to cut out all the exposition and focus on the core of the movie. But the core of the movie doesn’t make much sense without the exposition. The result is an overlong movie that feels like it should be shorter, but nothing can really be trimmed because the film tried to do too much. BvS is a prime example of this.

I think the guy gets way too many ideas in his head and has trouble telling a single, focused story with them.

ohlaph, in What word do you always forget?

Funny you should ask. And that’s the thing, I can’t remember.

JCreazy, in What is a nifty little feature modern gadgets have lost?

While the LED notification light was awesome, it is something that I don’t really need. I also don’t need a removal battery because my battery life has been extremely good and I’ll replace my phone before the battery goes bad. I don’t need wireless charging. My phone had that years ago but it’s kind of a gimmick, especially when a phone can charge up in about an hour and a half from dead. I don’t need a 3.5 mm headphone jack because I don’t use wired headphones, I have Bluetooth headphones but they rarely get used.

skyspydude1,

I’m glad that you’re the only person who buys the entire global supply of phones then.

It’s not like some people might be harder on phone batteries and need to replace them sooner, or enjoys just setting their phone down to charge it, or has expensive non-BT headphones they want to use because BT compresses the audio and BT mics are absolutely horrible compared to even dollar store earbuds.

But, as we established, those people don’t exist because you are literally the only person on this planet that uses a smartphone, so the entire global market can cater to your use cases and no one else’s, and it’s great they have gotten rid of all those features just for you.

JCreazy,

I never recall saying that my use case was everybody’s use case. I was just stating that sometimes things like this are fine for some people like myself. People like me are in the minority yet you made the assumption I was speaking for everyone. Options are always better. I wish the modular phone came to be.

h_ramus, (edited ) in Should I wait for the "Snyder cut" (director's cut) of Rebel Moon?

It had more slow motion scenes than an Indian action movie. Shallow and cliché dialogue ripping off from the star wars universe. Snyder was plastered all over the credits. If this isn’t his cut then take the damn name off the credits. No matter how you cut it it’ll have the same actors, storyline, dialogue depth and in-your-face visuals. Snyder really is a subtle and sophisticated guy.

What!? Lol

S_204, in What is your earliest memory?

I was like 3. We were moving into a new home, my brother and I are sitting on the front steps and the driveway is just gravel and rebar, no concrete yet.

Nothing special about it, just a memory of sitting there with my older brother on a warm day. I’d bet we went to the park afterwards but can’t recall.

I have vague memory of the house before that. The curtains in my room for some reason. Nothing particular, just them moving in the wind. .

The brain is weird.

nbafantest, in What do you like about liberalism, capitalism and conservatism?

We think that markets are by far the best way of organising most human affairs that involve scarce resources, because they align people’s incentives in ways that communicate where resources can be be used most efficiently, and give people reasons to come up with new ways of using existing resources.

A system is justified if it is the one that best allows people to live the lives that they want to live, or makes them happiest or more satisfied than any other.
