This guy wanted me to help him count cards and we were gonna get rich at casinos.

I decided to stay home and play video games instead.

In hindsight, I’d say pretty good lol

Haven’t heard from that guy in years but I’m going to assume he got murdered by a shady casino owner.

Anticorp,

Or he’s living in a beach house in the Bahamas.

Jackhammer_Joe,

Definitely the Bahamas. With lots of hot babes, sex, drugs and rock 'n roll

BleatingZombie, in Those who chose "never" in a "now or never" moment. How is it going for you?

“Now or never” is almost never a good deal. Avoid it like the plague

TheDoctorDonna,

When COVID hit I had a now or never moment and took the now. I took it a couple times actually. Got me a real career in a new province out of the deal so I figure I ended up for the better. Sometimes the choice is obvious like it was for me and you need to jump on that shit before you never get another chance.

RainfallSonata,

Same, though I didn’t realize it was now or never at the time. April 2020 I started the process of buying a house. Asked friends and family if I should wait to see what happened with Covid. They all said wait. I didn’t. Another couple of months later and I would still be renting. I’m so glad I jumped.

kent_eh,

Getting g a mortgage just before the rates started skyrocketing seems to have been a good choice.

Hopefully you are locked in for long enough that the rates can return to some sort of sane level before you need to renew.

pl_woah, in Why are Some Apps Updated Daily?

My naive butt: “I thought Google and Apple reviewed app applications for malicious code” Older me: “bahahahahaha” cries in cyber security

Pratai, in What's a proper response to another dog attempting to mount your dog multiple times and the owner really not doing anything about it?

Mount the owner.

Surprisingly nothing significant or life-changing. Phew

Vampire Empire by Big Theif

RagnarokOnline, in What are your best flight tips and tricks?

CubbyTustard has a good list. I’ll add the following:

  • Don’t fly a budget airline
  • Pop a dramamine before the flight (it makes you sleepy)
  • Bring gum with you on the plane (chew a piece on accent and descent to help pop your ears)
  • If in the US, use the Libby app alongside your local library and download audiobooks for free to pass the time during flights
  • Wear a mask on the plane (or better yet, one of those buff scarf things). Not only to protect against germs, but because if anyone farts, you’re probably not going to smell it. Plus, people kinda get intimidated by people wearing masks these days, so they probably won’t chat with you too much.

I love flying and being in the airport. Yes it can be stressful, but it’s a miracle of modern dang science that ~300 people at the same time can take to the sky. Awe-inspiring, really.

To expand: DO NOT assume that in plane WiFi will be working and download any movies, songs, etc. that you’re going to want to be enjoying!

(Our 6 hour flight to Hawaii was a SLOG because we assumed…)

Potatos_are_not_friends,

I’m a paranoid flyer and I always have at least 6 movies, a dozen mobile games, and a dozen switch games, 5 audiobooks, 40 ebooks, and a paper magazine.

The thought of being bored scares me. And the one time I had a 12 hour layover, I was well prepared.

ThePowerOfGeek,
@ThePowerOfGeek@lemmy.world avatar

Definitely this! I loaded fun videos on micro sd cards and popped them into each of my kids’ tablets for a transatlantic flight recently. It saved my sanity big time.

safesyrup,

Yes, airfoils and turbofans are really marvellous

athos77, in What are your best flight tips and tricks?

Wear a good-fitting N95 mask from before you enter your departure airport until after you leave your destination airport. Covid sucks, flu sucks, rsv sucks - just wear a mask, ffs. And get vaccinated.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

Especially in America where vaccination was a political thing. There’s still a huge chunk of Americans who get covid.

freeindv,

There’s still a huge chunk of Americans who get covid.

Yeah and most of them got the shots

freeindv,

Lol down votes don’t change the fact that everyone who got those shots still got covid

I’m still bummed that the band Splashdown was screwed over by the music industry. They were too jazz for pop fans and too pop for jazz fans but had an amazing sound and a brilliant vocalist in Melissa Kaplan. They released a couple EPs and a brief album (Stars & Garters) before their major label debut Blueshift was permanently shelved.

They posted a goodbye collection of demos & b-sides before dissolving into Universal Hall Pass, Freezepop, and Anarchy Club.

Edit: Got nostalgic and searched for news - happy Sol Invictus to me I guess! splashdown1.bandcamp.com/track/metamorphosis

There’s also the Pine Salad Productions fan-dub of a few Dirty Pair and Macross episodes from the late-80s, I think? I had a 5th gen VHS of a few (“The Dirty Pair Does Dishes” was one). Insane dubs that were absurd and utterly unrelated to the actual plots or even characters. I thought they were hysterical when I was a young edgy person.

A friend found “remastered” versions a few years ago and…the humour has not aged well, to put it mildly. Watch at your own risk. Glad I’m no longer edgy I suppose.

purplemonkeymad,

I was literally thinking, splashdown would probably fit this threads theme well when I came to your post. I’m glad I’m not the only one who knows they existed.

JackiesFridge,
@JackiesFridge@lemmy.world avatar

The band is definitely greater than the sum of their (also exceptionally good) parts. I am saddened to hear about Adam’s health issues but selfishly delighted they’re back together and planning new releases.

When the band was dissolving after the Blueshift fiasco and Adam shut down the Castle Von Buhler label, I emailed him asking if there was any hope Blueshift would see the light of day. He apologised and said no. A week later, the Stars & Garters CD and a CD-R of Blueshift mysteriously landed in my mailbox. With no band, he had zero reason to pander to a fan base. He’s just a good person.

You will be in close quarters with a lot of people. People suck and will be inconsiderate fucks. Airlines are shit and have you by the balls in terms of delays and shitty service.

Go in with low expectations and don’t make yourself more miserable by getting upset about it

otter,

Great thing for everyone to keep in mind :)

Don’t fly because airports have some kind of secret knowledge that they keep from us ordinary folk. Why do you think they call it “TERMINAL” parking? It’s like they can’t resist throwing it in our faces.

No matter how much experience you have as a pilot. You should always use checklists for routine operations and emergencies.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

Checklists have proven time and time again to be incredibly effective.

For years, doctors refused to use them because it was an insult to their intelligence. But the results showed, and doctors still refused. Then insurance happened and surprise surprise, doctors now use checklists.
