The best build I’ve played is my Bard in this playthrough. Swords bard, dex based sharpshooter, 2 hand crossbows, 2 hand fighting style, and 2 levels in paladin oath of the Ancients. You’re a skill monkey with dex and charisma, so you can do almost anything in the game as good as any other character, you have sleight of hand and persuasion expertise so you can disable traps, pick locks, and persuade conversations. You get medium armor proficiency, or heavy if you take pally first, so you have high AC and high dodge, so you can front line. You have smite and a ton of spells slots. You can one-shot big bads. With the ranged slashing flourish you can attack 5 times in a single turn for high damage. And to top it all off you have heals, crowd control, and a pretty great spell arsenal. There’s literally nothing this build can’t do. Not only can it do everything, it can do most things better than dedicated classes. The only two things I’ve found done better by other classes are mass healing from a cleric, or lots of AOE damage from a wizard. Anyways, I absolutely LOVE this build.
Astarion is my second favorite companion. Karlach is too cool to not be my first favorite, but Astarion with his scheming and sassy attitude is such fun! Astarion was also my most powerful companion, and group face in my first playthrough, so I very much needed him in the party. This time I’m playing as a Bard and don’t need him, but I just added him back to the party to take on Cazador, and he’s still a badass. I’m rolling with him as a Monk/Thief now and he kicks major ass, and doubles as a pack mule.
This feels like a pretty tame way to use unlimited freecast, honestly. By the time you have everything you need, there are only a few fights left that it’s worth using on, as well.
Yea, there are more overpowered things to use with unlimited freecast, though the thing with the underpants glitch is that it takes an Action. So if you’re trying to use this during combat, it’s not that great.
Also with this method, killing anyone does not seem to get associated with you. So you can basically stealth kill anyone, and then walk back back in with your group and everyone around is still friendly
Going for a more evil (maybe durge) run next to get more use out of Laez & Astarion. I’ve heard great things about both but didn’t hang much on the chaotic good run.
I never used Astarion, didn’t really care for him. So i got rid of him for something more useful (don’t want to spoil anything, and can’t figure out the spoiler tag on Boost)
I didn’t release Withers in my first play through and he still randomly showed up at camp later in Act 1. I don’t remember if he said any “we meet again” stuff but it was weird and possibly a bug.
It’s surprising how many times you need to replay the game to really understand everything a quest or NPC might do. The butterfly effect is strong in this game.
Yesss, yess! Half Orc Barbarian is so much fun. I only wish we had a voice that was basically just growls. Did you drop a hint for that badass sword you can get from the gith peeps in Act 1?
Honestly yeah. I know it would just add much more work and storage having even more voice acting, but barbarian/dragonborn voices are too prim and proper in current state.
Gale is sus as fuck at first. He’s too charming. My first thought was “this dude’s hiding something…” and I mean… I was right. It just wasn’t about being evil. I never trust a character that’s immediately nice when everyone up to that point has been a jerk.
If the price is not a problem for your income level, I highly recommend buying the game if you enjoy turn based crpgs. The game is worth every bit of the cost and more. Definitely the best game I’ve played so far.
I just finished my first play through. My friend hosted and I joined. He wanted to go “good” on tactician difficulty. So, we did. It took us 25 days. We got a lot of the more difficult achievements out of the way.
Next time I’m hosting and we’re doing an evil play through. Larian killed it. One of my better purchases this year.
I picked Gale as my origin character on a whim (I wanted to get to playing without spending too much time in character creation. Also I like wizards), but he’s been a blast to play.
I’ve been just playing custom characters, I’m on like the 3rd 100% playthrough. How different is it to grab one of the characters? Do you get to be an asshole to everyone as la zael?
I wouldn’t say it’s significantly different, but it’s different enough. Some of the choices are actually based around the characters, and you get character specific cutscenes.
I have yet to play an origin character other than durge. But it seems like it would make it easier to have everyone around for their bit of story. "Oops going into the magic shop need Gale. Here’s Jahira’s family, better grab her. Dammit, it’s Mizora, have to grab both Karlach and Wyll. Ugh, have to show this cave art to Shart.
Not even counting swapping in Gale when I need Feather Fall or buffing the party with Longstrider or Shart for Feast and Aid. I hate how cumbersome it is to swap characters. I know there are mods, but not on PS5.
Playing as durge rn (second play through, first as durge) and I’ve already lost all but shadow heart, astarian, and lazel to “accidents”, I hope I don’t regret that later but it’s nice having a more limited team, plus I can rely on hirelings if I need to
On my main character I have a bag for potions, a bag for scrolls, a bag for alchemy, and a bag for food. When I pick up arrows, I chose the option to send to the character that has a bow. When I pick up potions, I spread them around. When I pick up a spoon or things I'm going to sell, I pick up and add to wares. Heavy items that I am going to sell like weapons and armor, I send to camp. (It is easy to be staning in front of a vendor, then go to camp, get the heavy items, exit camp and I'm in front of the vendor again for selling it) When my character is getting heavy, I send all the camp supplies to camp. No need to really carry them.
