JohnDClay, in AITA for walking out of the Airport when I saw my husband's mom standing there with her luggage?

Yta for reposting these. These are very not useful to repost since the interesting bits are usually in the replies. Maybe post the subreddit drama version with the overview and follow up if you must.

deconstruct,

I’m reposting some of the most interesting and popular ones. Who knows when the next reddit meltdown will happen and sub disappears for a month?

I don’t see the harm, there’s not much activity in his community anyway.

clay_spine,

I’m glad you’re reposting. I’m here for the stories.

Leax,

Don’t worry, thanks for sharing!

traches, (edited )

Lemmy needs content dude, stop gatekeeping.

JohnDClay,

I haven’t seen any of these aita reposts that have any interaction, bearly any have upvotes. Aita posts just seem like the least valuable type of post to repost

vivavideri,

Well, I miiight just have to go comment and upvote all of them now. :)

vivavideri, in My (30M) fiance (38F) is angry that I got my daughter 5 pairs of running shoes

You know what, any time somebody starts trying to drop “IT’S THE JOB OF [insert gender here] TO DO _____,” my eyes glaze over. Like real hard.

Shardikprime, in My (30M) fiance (38F) is angry that I got my daughter 5 pairs of running shoes

clay_spine, in OOP learns a hard lesson about herself

I’m so glad these are getting reposted on lemmy because it was my absolute favorite thing on reddit and I miss it. So thank you!

As for this, it is so weird how people can go for years without addressing some minor misinterpretation. And then it becomes this crazy shit that blows up in someone’s face.

angrystego, in OOP learns a hard lesson about herself

Do people call unrelated children that they’re fond of a nephew/niece, just like in some families children call friendly adults uncle/aunt?

SharkEatingBreakfast,
@SharkEatingBreakfast@sopuli.xyz avatar

You don’t need to be blood-related to consider someone family.

I grew up with a babysitter who I now call an aunt. She grew up with my family and we became involved in each other’s lives, to the point where our closeness and love for each other makes us a family.

It can be cultural, too.

cabbagee,

Same for me. Very few of my aunts and uncles are by blood. I didn’t think twice about it growing up. My close friends and I have the same relationship. Love isn’t a finite resource and chosen family is an extension of that.

angrystego,

So what about the niece/nephew terminology - is it used in your case?

cabbagee,

Yup. Same as blood relatives.

angrystego,

Yeah, it’s the same in my bubble, friends of parents are often called aunts/unckes. But for some reason I’ve never heard any of them call their friends’ children nephews/nieces.

Vodik_VDK,

A long time ago a roommate of mine had a baby, and as he came of age all of our friends took it upon themselves to make their introductions as Uncle This or Aunt That. I remembered how confusing that was for me as a kid, so when Mom eventually spoke up on the matter I offered her Frunkle and Fraunt as an alternative title.

I don’t talk to her anymore but I do sometimes wonder if she’s still using that word.

Raisin8659,
@Raisin8659@monyet.cc avatar

Yeah, could be cultural. There’s a Buddhist teaching that you should treat your good friend’s kids like your own.

angrystego,

I understand that. I’m more interested in the terminology in the adult->child direction.

SCB,

Yes. My dad’s friends were also my uncles (and I have 8 actual uncles so it’s not like we were short on uncles), and I am an uncle to all my close friends’ kids

angrystego,

Yeah, but do they call you their nephew/niece?

SCB,

Some do! I certainly say that.

Leax, in OOP learns a hard lesson about herself

Wow. Sounds like she dodged a lot of bullets and can start getting a better life and friends.

vivavideri, in OOP learns a hard lesson about herself

Wow, it must be tough for people to go through life with this level of insurmountable insecurity, like… holy shit.

If I were to tell you that the first was a joke, the second sarcasm, and the third a genuine question, how would you differentiate them?

Remember that text is lifeless. There’s nothing there except the markings on the page.

Thus, you should never fault the reader for not getting your intention. It’s on you to make that clear.

I’m aware, I should have used a tone indicator.

Rooty, in OOP's 9 year old sister was sent to boarding school but never came back. OOP suspects foul play and thinks parents and grandma are involved

Yeah, these long posts with frequent updates are 100% fiction. Please don’t bring this serverspace wasting crap on Lemmy.

But (sound: boo) is how you celebrate a soccer goal in French.

Knusper, in My Wife has scammed multiple people, and lied to me about it

I especially don’t understand why she did this. If finances were actually that dire, then surely OOP would have know about it and mentioned it. With OOP working out of state, you’d also hope that this job is worth the time…

deconstruct,

I don’t get it either. Guessing it’s a small thrill from scamming people or she needs money for drugs.

BURN,

The worst petty shoplifters are upper-middle class teenagers (generally girls)

It’s not out of need. It’s out of a sense of entitlement that they can get out of any consequences.

Pieisawesome,

It’s not a sense of entitlement. It’s the adrenaline rush of stealing

Kyoyeou, in OOP is gifted laser tattoo removal by her mother-in-law

Wholesome way to end it!

Kyoyeou, in My wife and her best friend accused me of having an affair, then got angry when I didn't have one

I have to say OOP seemed to be a nice person aware of the right things to do. Wishing him well
