As for this, it is so weird how people can go for years without addressing some minor misinterpretation. And then it becomes this crazy shit that blows up in someone’s face.

Do people call unrelated children that they’re fond of a nephew/niece, just like in some families children call friendly adults uncle/aunt?

You don’t need to be blood-related to consider someone family.

I grew up with a babysitter who I now call an aunt. She grew up with my family and we became involved in each other’s lives, to the point where our closeness and love for each other makes us a family.

It can be cultural, too.

Same for me. Very few of my aunts and uncles are by blood. I didn’t think twice about it growing up. My close friends and I have the same relationship. Love isn’t a finite resource and chosen family is an extension of that.

Yeah, it’s the same in my bubble, friends of parents are often called aunts/unckes. But for some reason I’ve never heard any of them call their friends’ children nephews/nieces.

A long time ago a roommate of mine had a baby, and as he came of age all of our friends took it upon themselves to make their introductions as Uncle This or Aunt That. I remembered how confusing that was for me as a kid, so when Mom eventually spoke up on the matter I offered her Frunkle and Fraunt as an alternative title.

I don’t talk to her anymore but I do sometimes wonder if she’s still using that word.

Yes. My dad’s friends were also my uncles (and I have 8 actual uncles so it’s not like we were short on uncles), and I am an uncle to all my close friends’ kids
