Modern software engineering’s achilles cornerstone

Toes, (edited ) in Windows 7 and Windows 8 Support

What do you think causes these people to hold on?

Windows 10 is free, it takes hardly any technical skill to upgrade. Linux is a great idea too for tech savvy users.

zipzoopaboop,

10 WAS free, if you updated years ago

conorab,

What do you think causes people to hold on?

If it isn’t on fire yet don’t fix it, probably. I’ve heard of people still using Vista, which is certainly a choice.

Windows 10 is free

It’s not free legally in Australia, the US and I’m guessing the EU (I think Portugal is a. exception here). The rest I have no idea. The legal free upgrade from Windows 7 and 8/8.1 ended some time ago even though Microsoft will still accept those keys. That said, if you’re willing to deal with the activation watermark you don’t even need to crack Windows to make it work without a licence. 😉

Linux is a great idea for tech savvy users.

I was never able to get past the “I need a Windows partition stage” because there would always be obe game that I couldn’t play. It’s making great strides though and is one hell of a rabbit hole to jump down!

wildginger,

I heard through the grapevine and definitely not by experience that there are many easy ways to remove the watermark too

CJOtheReal, in 2023 Year In Review - Easy Allies Podcast - Dec 29, 2023 (Pluto: At least watch the"Unending Layoffs" section of the video; it is depressing and really shows problems with the game industry)
  1. Ew hexbear
  2. The current layoffs are actually just a return to pre covid levels. The gaming companys went on a hiring spree during covid and now they can’t pay for people doing essentially nothing
Blizzard, in 2023 Top Games measured by Gross Revenue

… on Steam. I find it hard to believe that Starfield had revenue comparable to other major titles if it didn’t come out on Playstation.

4 out of 9 platinum sellers are free to play games with microtransactions. And people are surprised that good AAA games are so rare. Why bother when people will spend more on barely functioning buggy crap.

otp,

To be fair, a decent share of the AAA games are also barely functioning buggy crap on launch…

resketreke,
@resketreke@kbin.social avatar

And some even come with microtransactions.

idiocracy,

“AAA” game companies goal is not to make good games, but to make good money.

ImplyingImplications,

Starcraft II Dev explains a horse microtransaction im World of Warcraft, that took one person a few days to make, made Blizzard more money than StarCraft II, which took an entire team 2 years to develop. Capitalism ensures major studios will never make a good game. Games are now only a pretense to sell microtransactions that cost the company nothing to produce but sell for millions.

BmeBenji,

The fact that Modern Warfare 3 is among the platinum sellers with a Mostly Negative review score blows my mind

WarmSoda,

Nah. That’s like being surprised EAs new football game made bank.

Hestia, in Valve says no to inhaling Steam Deck fumes

They probably just replied with “ew, no. WTF?” And them someone writes an article about it.

altima_neo,

Thats pretty much all it was. Guy asked tech support if its OK to smell the fan exhaust, and they told them they dont recommend it so as to not give anyone a reason to do something needlessly stupid, in case something does go wrong.

i-get-it Back in my day we’d just huff the gas fumes while we were filling up the car.

It smells so good. But every time I do I think “yep this is pure cancer” and I stop.

hperrin, in Valve says no to inhaling Steam Deck fumes

Well then I say fuck you right back. I’m sniffing my Steam Deck and there’s nothing they can do to stop me.

Having competing platforms require games to move away from steam workshop in order to also service their customer on these other platforms might be a blessing and a curse at the same time.

Finally some much needed updates.

HarkMahlberg,
@HarkMahlberg@kbin.social avatar

I assume you mean Paradox and Cities Skylines 2 mods. I worry when their mod manager finally gets released, it will still have a fraction of the features and QOL that Steam Workshop has right now. Epic Games learned the hard way that it is extremely difficult to spin up a new product and compete with a product that has decades of maturity.

Tosti,
@Tosti@feddit.nl avatar

Absolutely true. There are several websites that also do mod support (for better or worse). I just think that having several options to provide mods to customers is better than having one option.

Venat0r,

?

Odo,

Check the Eurogamer link in the article. It’s from 2012. This shouldn’t be an article in 2023.
