Spore, in What are your opinions of Guix?

Nobody has mentioned that Guix is readily available on NixOS right now? Add a line to your config and it’s ready to go. Compatible with everything else.

velox_vulnus,

How about the other way around? I want to switch to Guix, but I want to keep using Nixpkgs for the time being?

Spore,

You can use Nix on Guix System and vice versa, but it’s like installing them as a package manager on a foreign system. The store and packages currently are completely isolated between the two, although there’s a very early plan for a common store interface.

misophist, in Do you mount an embedded Linux file system to the workstation and use your host scripts or do you SSH/SCP and deal with the limited shell commands?

I edit everything in my local copy of the repository and then push the changes to my devices with ansible.

thejml,

Same, but I’ve got Ansible (or Puppet) powered off of a git repo. So I make my changes, commit/push to fit and then Ansible takes it from there.

russjr08, in Does Wayland really break everything? (Nate Graham's OG post ref'd in the Phoronix article)

My experience with Nvidia+ Wayland was… Less than desirable. Enough to make me pickup an AMD card.

However, once I did that my experience instantly better. Hell, even X11 worked better - I was never able to get the desktop to stay at a consistent 60FPS (I’m still on a 60Hz panel which I’m just now getting around to upgrading shortly) in X until I moved to my AMD card.

The 545 driver update just made things so much worse. So I’d say Wayland+Nvidia is not great (for others it works fine so maybe it’s down to what card you have?) however on my AMD card (and my old MacBook with Intel integrated graphics) it’s fantastic.

azvasKvklenko,

Nouveau + NVK is the hope 🙏

randomaside,
@randomaside@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

How do we as the community turn hope into help? Is there a way to contribute directly to the NVK developers?

warmaster,

Check their project page or hit them up on their repo. I’m sure any help will be welcomed.

QuazarOmega, in Experience with KDE on Fedora?

KDE has been a treat for me after having used Gnome so long, I like both and in fact I still keep Gnome on the laptop, especially for the smooth gestures.
On the desktop I’m keeping KDE as it feels more suited by default, for that I suggest Fedora Kinoite because I honestly can’t ever imagine running a mutable system anymore, unless it is strictly for tinkering and, since it seems you’re looking for something that has to just work, that will be a great fit!

::: ..Now to talk about what hasn't just worked for meI used to experience freezes and crashes, but don’t see them happening anymore (maybe it was my hardware being too new?); containers (mostly distrobox), I don’t know what the heck is happening behind the scenes, but I think I’ve seen my containers breaking for the third or fourth time across updates this year, luckily it’s not a tragedy as you can usually roll back the system temporarily (OSTree rocks!) and/or remake them from snapshots or apply fixes that are mentioned in the issue trackers and whatnot when they pop up, the podman devs and others folks are fast and responsive.
All in all, these being the biggest issues for me, this distro is one of the most rock solid there are!

mortalic,

Seems like Fedora Kinoite is getting several votes. Maybe I’ll give that a go for myself. I also like the idea of Fedora more since they are starting to offer their own Laptops with pretty nice hardware it seems.

The idea of buying new laptops that all just have proper OS support seems, novel.

QuazarOmega,

Maybe I’ll give that a go for myself

Good luck!

they are starting to offer their own Laptops with pretty nice hardware it seems

Oh that’s neat, I must have missed those news, were they announced anywhere?

mortalic,

I’m not sure where I ran across it, but here’s their site. Fedora slimbook

QuazarOmega,

Awesome hardware, but damn, 1299€?
Guess I’ll be looking respectfully… from the sidelines (o.o )

mortalic,

Yeah, now try adding components to it in order to make it a bit more modern, decent RAM, nvme, I’m at 1900. Pass. But hey, I support them and if I had that kind of money, I’d buy it.

QuazarOmega,

You took the words out of my mouth, that’s what I felt with most, if not all, “Linux laptops” I’ve seen up to now: concept is great, hardware is great, price is, well, greater.
I do hope that everyone that can afford System76, Slimbook, Starlabs, etc. (hey, I’m noticing an unusual pattern here 🤔) will buy from them because I’d love to see both more adoption and makers that can improve Linux as a whole thriving

fossphi,

Be careful with these containerized distros. I would read bit more before jumping into something not standard as of now. In particular, making changes to the root image by installing packages works a lot differently than good old Linux distros.

Otherwise Fedora’s KDE spin is quite good, too. They include a lot of extraneous packages, though.

Aradia, in I didn't know where else to ask this, if there is another comm i should ask please lmk. Do you have any suggestions for wireless headphones i can use with linux?
@Aradia@lemmy.ml avatar

More than “with Linux” you should indicate how much do you expect to spend here, it’s not about the OS, it’s about what kind of headsets you want (what features).

blakeus12,
@blakeus12@hexbear.net avatar

sorry! i will edit the post to include the following: i don’t really care about the quality too much, i want to spend ~80 usd or so, but that’s flexible within 10 dollars or so. i would prefer a headset that has a USB dongle, like a wireless mouse. i don’t really need a microphone in it, but i wouldn’t really conplain if there was one.

Aradia, (edited )
@Aradia@lemmy.ml avatar

Well, then I can’t help, I normally always get those that cost more than 200 USD, they have it all (Bluetooth + dongle) and with high quality (+ noise-canceling). Mines are WH-1000XM4 if you are interested, and I’m very happy with them, in the past I had Bose QuietComfort 35 and Sennheiser Momentum M2-AEBT and I would still get Sony WH-1000XM4 as it is smarter with many features and quality.

Stillhart,

You might check out the 1More wireless headphones. They’re my go-to recommendation for someone who wants something that’s not garbage but doesn’t want to pay full audiophile prices. I haven’t heard this particular headphone from them, but they’re known to have good sound quality for the price, generally by sacrificing some build quality. However, this beats out a lot of the comparably priced competition that sacrifices both.

walden, in Which distro in your opinion is the best for virtualization (Windows 10 on either KVM or VMware), stability, and speed?

Will you use it for other stuff or just virtualization? Proxmox is designed for virtualization. It’s based on Debian and has a web GUI.

mmababes,

Virtualization mostly. I need Win 10 and Kali Linux to run at the same time on the host distro.

db2,
Aradia,
@Aradia@lemmy.ml avatar

For just two VM, any Linux distro is enough, virt-manager to easily run those VMs up and done. The default network will allow them to communicate between their NAT. Proxmox sounds too many complications for just some testing or development stuff.

kelvie,

Proxmox is a lot more user friendly than virt-manager (yes I’ve used both, but I just started using proxmox).

Aradia,
@Aradia@lemmy.ml avatar

But Proxmox is a big web interface app with many packages, right? virt-manager looks much easier than installing Proxmox.

4am,

Other posters are right in that KVM is the same on just about every distro. Proxmox comes with extra tools for management and I think that makes it especially well suited.

lemmyvore, in Dell Latitude Frustration

I would start by running a full memtest scan. Faulty RAM can manifest itself as apparently random freezes or application crashes.

lemmy_user_838586, (edited )

That was my first thought, sounds like a hardware issue, either maybe overheating? Faulty ram or ssd issues, etc

Been using Ubuntu on my Dell Latitude 7490 for years with no issues

knfrmity,

Of course I should have done that too. Running one now, I’ll let it go for a few hours and see what happens.

lemmy_user_838586,

Not sure you saw my edit, but I’ve been using a Dell Latitude 7490 for years and its been perfectly fine, so the issues you’re experiencing aren’t normal. Something is definitely up with your specific laptop. Just mentioning to help you narrow down issues.

lemmyvore,

If it finds bad areas take a picture. You can tell the kernel which are the bad addresses so it can avoid them.

    Dang. Guess I’ll be switching to Ublue Bazzite.

    Which of the many bullet points in the changelog is the reason for that?

    cashews_best_nut,

    Some people are into cock and ball torture.

    jcrabapple,
    @jcrabapple@infosec.pub avatar

    I don’t like KDE and if Gnome is not going to be the main DE anymore I might just move to another distro. NBD.

    Rogers,

    What are your main dislikes of kde?

    jcrabapple,
    @jcrabapple@infosec.pub avatar

    I’ve always experienced weird annoying bugs, and I much prefer the UX and minimalism of gnome. It’s better for productivity. I don’t just use my desktop for gaming.

    8Bitz0,

    This is my complaint as well. KDE certainly has advantages and neat design ideas, but I always come across some major bugs that make my device unusable.

    Definitely not saying GNOME doesn’t have bugs as well though.

    jcrabapple,
    @jcrabapple@infosec.pub avatar

    Everything has bugs of course but I personally don’t notice as many in Gnome and I just like the overall UX and workflow better.

    woelkchen,
    @woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

    Well, Nobara is a gaming-oriented distribution and as the changelog outlines, does Plasma currently offer technological benefits. As is the case with everything, this isn’t set in stone and might change at some point but right now the main target audience for paid development work for Gnome are corporate users where for Plasma it’s being Desktop Mode for Steam Deck.

    woelkchen,
    @woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

    Gnome is still there, just not by default and Bazzite defaults to KDE Plasma as well.

    jcrabapple,
    @jcrabapple@infosec.pub avatar

    I just saw that. I’ll keep looking.

    woelkchen,
    @woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

    I’ll keep looking.

    But why? Not being the default doesn’t mean that Gnome isn’t available. As both are Fedora derivatives, both should have good Gnome support inherited from Fedora anyway. As the changelog says, only a handful of Gnome Shell extensions will no longer be provided in the Nobara repository but instaling them manually from extensions.gnome.org is a breeze.

    SuperIce,

    Gnome isn’t the main DE of bazzite either though

    ikidd,
    @ikidd@lemmy.world avatar

    Oh, just let him have his hissy fit.

    jcrabapple,
    @jcrabapple@infosec.pub avatar

    TIL not liking something is a hissy fit. Thank you for this educational comment.

    ikidd,
    @ikidd@lemmy.world avatar

    They still have a gnome ISO, but you’re going to throw it out because it isnt the “official” version. That sounds like a hissy fit.

    The non-official KDE previous version was fine, since the point of the distro is the backend optimizations for gaming and editing. Its not what DE leads point since you can add whatever Fedora has in the repos, which is pretty much everything.

    woelkchen,
    @woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

    TIL not liking something is a hissy fit.

    While I don’t know the term hissy fit, switching distributions just because the default of a user-changeable setting is different is definitively a bit over the top.

    jcrabapple,
    @jcrabapple@infosec.pub avatar

    I see that now. It’s cool I’ll just dual boot Nobara KDE and Fedora Silverblue or something.

    quarterlife, (edited )

    Speaking on Bazzite, KDE is our default to match SteamOS, but we put more effort into the GNOME release if anything due to us trying to maintain feature parity with Valve’s KDE, including being able to right click and add to steam, use the desktop nested, enable VRR, add custom themes based on the ones Valve shipped, and add the steam deck wallpapers ported to GNOME.

    That being said, GE’s points about GNOME are very real, and they have a lot of catching to do in regards to gaming. KDE has DRM Leasing, VRR and HDR right now.

    kogasa,
    @kogasa@programming.dev avatar

    Literally just install GNOME

    woelkchen,
    @woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

    As I understand it, that’s not even needed because the current DE choice is being preserved at an upgrade. The only thing that needs manual tweaking is reinstalling the extensions from the Gnome website which isn’t really an issue at all.

    WeLoveCastingSpellz,

    there still is a gnome spin… it just isn’t the default

    Stillhart,

    Because of the switch to KDE from Gnome? Or something else I’m missing?

    mvirts, in Redox OS - an OS built entirely out of Rust

    Slap a Firefox on top (and time travel to when ff is all rusted) and we’ll be coming for ChromeOS. But will windows be completely rusted first? 🙃

    ChiefSinner,

    I think the main reason Firefox isn’t on there is because redox os doesn’t use Wayland and x11. Porting firefox would be a massive effort unfortunately.

    agent_flounder,

    I’m definitely woke af. And proud of it.

    I have come to think that when profits are at odds with health, happiness, the good of society and humanity, then either a non profit foundation needs to be running it or it needs to be in the hands of the government—but a much less corrupt one. And I believe oligopolies need to be broken up and anti trust laws greatly expanded and enforced. Then we can deal with the oligopoly / plutocracy. We set a maximum wage (including all earnings) and tax 100% above that. Penalties for regulatory breaches include jail time. For corporations. With corporations reigned in, oligopolies and oligarchies crumbled, we can prevent regulatory capture and corruption. Campaign finance is abolished and it is paid for out of public funds. We abolish first past the post voting in favor of scientifically determined better alternatives to ensure voters actually have a variety of choices.

    Idk wtf that makes me except maybe a ranting lunatic lol

    Interesting aside for anyone interested; you can subscribe to her Peertube account with your Lemmy account by searching !veronicaexplains in your instance’s search bar (or clicking that link). Then any video she uploads in the future will show up in your lemmy feed, and any comments you leave on lemmy should show up on the peertube video! :D

    GenderNeutralBro,

    The link you posted seems to have the full url embedded so it doesn’t work in my client. I think this will work, pasted as plain text: !veronicaexplains

    ProdigalFrog,

    Ah, you’re right, it autocompleted with the full URL. Edited the comment to match yours. ^^

    otter,

    Have there been many posts in the past month? I only see one 3 weeks ago, not sure if it’s a federation issue

    ProdigalFrog, (edited )

    I’m not sure if the lemmy page will fill out with her previous uploads, I can only see the one about SSH on my feed too. She seems to upload fairly regularly, and this latest video about Linux Mint was uploaded 20 hours ago. I suspect if you’re the first person to subscribe on your instance, only future videos will show up on it, but I’m not entirely sure.

    otter,

    Makes sense, I was subscribed from a previous post but I’ll see if the new stuff shows up soon :)

    Bahalex,

    I believe she made a post/video a bit ago saying that she was taking a break from the videos for a bit, after quitting her job. She said she was going to focus more on her channel(s) as her main focus, to do something she enjoys.

    I see a lot of her YouTube stuff posted a month ago, a couple of new ones, my guess is that her break is over and there will be more stuff coming.

    Though I may be misinterpreting the question…

    GammaGames,

    Neat, does this work from other peertube channels too?
