noddy, in FOSS 88 key pianos

I guess the closest to a decent FOSS piano plugin is MDA Piano, or perhaps search for piano samples. Perhaps someone has created a decent piano preset for the dexed FM synth (but will probably sound very 80s). I’m using pianoteq (unfortunately proprietary, but it has native linux support and sounds good).

Kata1yst, in Red Hat paywall?! How the Raleigh giant divided the open source community.
@Kata1yst@kbin.social avatar

Don't besmirch Red Hat this way. Red Hat is as dead as Sun Microsystems at this point. They're just being Weekend at Bernie's-ed by IBM. Despite IBMs promise of independent operation and business as usual.

ieatpillowtags,

A colorful image but what does that even mean? I get not liking their decisions but they’re hardly dead…

Kata1yst,
@Kata1yst@kbin.social avatar

Red Hat is gone. The leadership, vision, people, and culture that made Red Hat Red Hat are gone. IBM has completely taken over internally. Red Hat's logo is being paraded around to keep people complacent due to their former reputation.

ieatpillowtags,

I think it’s a cop out to blame any of this on IBM as these kinds of changes started before the acquisition.

I also don’t know who you mean when you say the people are gone as most of the executive leadership have been with the company for a decade or two.

I guess I was sad when they killed shadowman but that was before IBM too!

stella,

they’re hardly dead…

It’s a matter of perspective. Just like how microsoft is dead for a lot of us because we don’t use their products, the same can be said about IBM and red hat.

ransomwarelettuce, in How to choose a computer/laptop/device that is better compatible with linux? Are there certain things to look out for when shopping?

In my experience it comes down to avoid nvdia and check for the network/wifi chipset support on linux.

I flip the bird at the Red Hat building every time I pass it.

billwashere,

Hello fellow Raleighen… Raleighite… Raleighian?

SGHFan, (edited )
@SGHFan@lemdro.id avatar

I also don’t know what the terminology is. I’m in North Raleigh, and I sometimes go to downtown.

billwashere,

Used to live in Cary, now in Clayton (house prices… geez). Work at State so I see that giant Redhat building everyday. Hell I’m on Centennial campus so they used to be down the street.

prunerye, in FOSS 88 key pianos

I’ve never dived into this, but if electronic keyboards are just glorified midi-controllers, I’d have to think you could find a FOSS solution. If they’re not simply midi-controllers, I wouldn’t begin to know. I’d imagine you might have an easier time with keyboards from the 90s or whenever.

You could try dexed, it’s a YamahaDX7 clone github.com/asb2m10/dexed/releases

lascapi, in 10 REASONS why Linux Mint is the desktop OS to beat in 2023

I love how it’s focused on stabilty in UI/UX and that it’s supported by a lots of peoples around the world.

stella, in This week in KDE: Plasma 6 Alpha approaches

Maybe it’s just me, but I love KDE5 so much I’m just not looking forward to 6.

stella, in What has been your experience with Flatpak?

Good for software that isn’t available any other way.

I never use flatpaks if something is available in the Manjaro repository or AUR.

stella, in Interview with KDE’s lead propagandist

Love KDE. Hope they maintain their position as the ‘swiss-army knife’ of DEs.

yak, in Does anybody use Thunderbird on Android a.k.a. K-9
@yak@lmy.brx.io avatar

Not tried the app version. Been using Fairemail for a while now, since k9 was unmaintained.

Fairemail is well maintained. Quick. Supports multiple accounts very well. Loads of features (could be a downside for those who like things simple). Designed with security and privacy as top priorities right from the start. Open source development. For a long time its been the best email client on Android IMHO.

falcon15500,
@falcon15500@lemmy.nine-hells.net avatar

I like how K-9 hooks directly into OpenKeychain for encryption. Does Fairemail do that?

yak,
@yak@lmy.brx.io avatar

Yes.

Deebster,
@Deebster@programming.dev avatar

I moved from K9 to FairEmail too, and I think I’ll be staying as long as it’s maintained. I particularly like the focus on privacy.

stardreamer,
@stardreamer@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

+1 for fairmail. Never have I seen an app so functional yet so ugly at the same time.

biddy,

The same could be said for K-9. What more could you want from an email app.

stardreamer, (edited )
@stardreamer@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Last time I checked, K-9 didn’t have OAUTH integration.

Granted, it’s been a few years, so that may have changed since then.

As much as I don’t like Gmail, I need it for work so it’s kinda important for productivity software to support that.

Edit: Nvm. Looks like they finally added OAUTH last year. Better late than never.

movie, (edited ) in Does anybody use Thunderbird on Android a.k.a. K-9

It requires 2-step verification which requires a phone number, security key or google prompt for google accounts. Hard pass :D edit: i stand corrected, this seems to have been changed

Hangs down, the best email client for IMAP.

MalReynolds, in Am I going off the deep end by considering Fedora Silverblue or Kinoite?
@MalReynolds@slrpnk.net avatar

I like Kinoite, have been happy for a year or so (how time flies). Pretty bulletproof, automatic updates and rollbacks, lotsa good stuff. One minor but relevant gotcha is it doesn’t like docker particularly much, I found the path of least resistance was to move to podman (which is more secure, can be easily turned into (–user) system.d units and has a cool auto update feature), podman-compose is your friend…

tsl, in Does anybody use Thunderbird on Android a.k.a. K-9

I’ve been using it for many years with my four mailboxes and I am very happy with it!
