billwashere,

And I thought the old internet was YTMND,slashdot, and fark.

Fuck I’m old.

billwashere,

Probably a very unpopular opinion but…

Taylor Swift. I am so sick of seeing her name mentioned all the time.

billwashere,

I’d give anything for more of those moments. My son is 21 now and barely acknowledges me anymore. I hope he comes around and it’s just a phase but I have my doubts. So good call on playing legos. You have a limited number of those as a dad.

billwashere,

Yep same here. Professional IT for over 25 years. Nobody knows everything. It’s ok to fail. Just keep swimming. And when you do get something working…. that high is unbelievable. It’s like a drug addiction and will drive you to do more and more. Good luck!!!

Is it actually dangerous to run Firefox as root?

I have a few Linux servers at home that I regularly remote into in order to manage, usually logged into KDE Plasma as root. Usually they just have several command line windows and a file manager open (I personally just find it more convenient to use the command line from a remote desktop instead of directly SSH-ing into the...

billwashere,

No if you leave it running and don’t use it.

billwashere,

I’m going to hell for laughing so hard at this.

billwashere,

Maybe it might because Israel is in the wrong? Maybe overreacting a bit and committing something awfully close to genocide? Just a thought.

billwashere,

I know plenty of Jewish folks who aren’t happy with the Israeli government and how this is being handled.

billwashere,

In my freshman year of computer science our main computer lab was filled with Sage IV machines. Basically a Motorola 68k series with 4 or 5 serial terminals. Most people were writing Pascal code or using a simple word processor. But god forbid you were on there with someone taking assembly language. Because they could write really stupid code with super tight loops that never allowed any other code to run, and the only thing you could do was reboot. So if you hadn’t saved your code you were fucked.

So I never purposely wrote really bad code that would overwrite unprotected shared memory with random quotes from Marvin from HHGTG to mess with other people. I would never do that. That would have been unethical and shit… 🤔

I did learn a lot of basic hardware and operating systems though so there’s that.

billwashere,

I’m a doctor not an escalator…

Wait wrong Star show.

billwashere,

Well having personally dealt with the Redhat and Ubuntu fiascos there are some that are clearly better than others 🤣

I would say that some are better dealing with certain hardware better than others. But you are right, it’s all Linux so any distro could be made to work.

billwashere,

Personally if it were me and gaming was my primary focus, I’d go to the place that’s doing the most with gaming and Linux, SteamOS.

There are lots of sites that go through the process of building a Linux gaming machine using SteamOS.

Here’s just one random video I found (not affiliated with this at all) about using an old optiplex from eBay, some ram upgrades, and a RX580 GPU. Apparently they did this for $150 but take that with a grain of salt. Hope this helps.

2in1's or tablet recs. for linux please.

Hi, lets talk about 2in1 laptops and tablets. Which ones are the best for running linux on them, which ones are your favorites right now, what do you like using them for, etc. I find myself really missing having a 2in1 sometimes, especially for the portability aspects of them....

billwashere,

Ok this is sexy. I wasn’t even looking for something like this but now I want one.

billwashere,

Hello fellow Raleighen… Raleighite… Raleighian?

billwashere,

Used to live in Cary, now in Clayton (house prices… geez). Work at State so I see that giant Redhat building everyday. Hell I’m on Centennial campus so they used to be down the street.

billwashere,

My 6 least favorite words…

Audible hopes you’ve enjoyed this program

billwashere,

These are beautiful until you have to replace a cable. And in addition you feel like a heel having to undo this art.
