narc0tic_bird, in what's a normie KDE distro?

Rolling release: openSUSE Tumbleweed Semi-annual release: Fedora KDE Spin LTS: Kubuntu (3 years), Debian (5 years), AlmaLinux (10 years)

I personally think semi-annual is where it’s at. You get packages that are mostly up-to-date (and with Flatpak user-facing software is up-to-date anyway), and you don’t have to fear that something will break/be incompatible with every small update.

leopold,

Kubuntu is also semi-annual, but LTS releases only come every two years. Regular releases have a year and a half of support.

now to get a chromebook with coreboot to really stick it to the anti FOSS demons

hagelslager,

Just a passer-by: why a chromebook? Is their hardware less reliant on proprietary software?

Secret300,

Depends on which one but some are easier to install coreboot on

merthyr1831,

the Chrultrabook project is what youll wanna look into, but basically yes. You can reliably get new-ish hardware very cheaply and flash FOSS stuff like Coreboot onto it.

No idea why tbh. The equivalent laptops outside of ChromeOS’ ecosystem are usually much more locked down, to the point where the most powerful systems you’ll find being able to run Coreboot are decades-old thinkpads on 3rd gen mobile i5 and Kepler mGPUs.

frozen, in Bazzite 2.2.0 has been released - now with the fsync kernel and HDR in game mode
@frozen@lemmy.frozeninferno.xyz avatar

I love Bazzite, but I wish they would fix the no audio after wake on the OLED. I encountered it often while running the testing release, so I went back to SteamOS to wait for a stable release with the fix. Imagine my disappointment when they released a new stable version with the bug still present. :(

merthyr1831,

What’s your usecase for swapping from SteamOS? I noticed on some video that it came with A Steamdeck image but I couldn’t think of why you’d want to swap to a SteamOS ‘clone’

frozen,
@frozen@lemmy.frozeninferno.xyz avatar

In addition to what’s been mentioned, Bazzite also updates the kernel and graphics drivers more often than SteamOS, so yes, while things are slightly more likely to break every now and then, there are some decent performance gains to be had.

d3Xt3r,

Does restarting PipeWire fix it?

systemctl --user restart pipewire.service

or

systemctl --user restart wireplumber pipewire pipewire-pulse

If that works, you could create a systemd unit file to automatically run that after resume.

dino, in Reddit API blew up and now I run Linux?

I don’t understand this topic. What are you trying to say?

Xcf456,

The reddit api blocking 3rd party apps pushed a whole bunch of people onto lemmy, and lemmy is very big on FOSS and Linux so it’s been a gateway of sorts

WindowsEnjoyer,

Try to browse Lemmy without finding anything about Linux 😅

Not to mention, Reddit’s assault was followed by seemingly every tech company looking on and saying “hold my beer”

I’ve always been wary of the ability of tech companies to pull the plug of services on a whim, but holy shit did 2023 bring that way up the priority list

beepnoise, (edited )

I think OP is trying to say:

  • There was the Reddit API catastrophe
  • That led him to lemmy/ActivityPub
  • Which gave him exposure to Linux
  • Which he used to give Linux a shot

And he seems to be having a great time with LInux

dino,

Okay, thanks for clarification. really didn’t get it. :D

tkk13909, in "Must Try" distros and DEs?

I’m really looking forward to Plasma 6 and Cinnamon just had a pretty good release do there’s a couple for you :)

nickwitha_k,

I am so glad that Cinnamon has been going strong. It made Gnome 3 a lot less painful.

Kidplayer_666,

Hopefully by the time OP gets his laptop, the wayland session will be almost complete

nickwitha_k,

They’ve got time. Shipment isn’t due until Q2.

const_void,

What Plasma 6 features are you looking forward to?

tkk13909,

There’s not really anything specific but it’ll be the first time I experience a full plasma upgrade since I started using Linux in 2022. From what I’ve seen of it, the interface is going to be a lot cleaner though so I guess I’m looking forward to that.

survivalmachine, (edited ) in Reddit API blew up and now I run Linux?

Lol, saaaaaame! I’ve run plenty of Linux servers over the past 30 years with only occasional attempts at desktop Linux, but never got it to graduate past a secondary box or dual-boot. All of the happy Linux desktop users I’ve run across on Lemmy convinced me to give it another go. I tried Ubuntu for a month under the mistaken assumption that it was still a relevant, stable, easy distro (10-15 years ago, it was the distro to use if you just wanted a no-fuss Linux desktop). Snaps made me want to end myself, but not quite give up on Linux altogether, so I pivoted and now I’m on month 3 of happily maining Arch!

    dyk the gtk3 module?

synapse1278, in best foss cad software?
    @synapse1278@lemmy.world avatar

I have tried openSCAD and FreeCAD, they are both good in their own right, but utimatly they also both have very steep learning curves. I suppose Blender can also be used for CAD but I have no experience with it. I just want to quickly design some parts for 3D printing as a hobby and don’t feel like spending hundreds of hours learning those tools. I am current using Onshape.com, it works well on Linux/Firefox, suits my needs and free to use with some limitations. But it is proprietary :(

    k4j8,

Came here to suggest Onshape. It spoiled me for all other CAD software. (But it is web-based and proprietary.)

OsrsNeedsF2P, (edited ) in GNOME and AppIndicator/system tray

Gnome spends a lot of time testing user designs that are simple and get the task done for the 99% marketshare they don’t have. They try not to be bound by our current approach to computers, and instead idealize what most of the world actually wants.

I think it’s a noble goal but will never touch it. I’m surprised other people do. That said, I’ll always support them because of how much they upstream.
