Just give it a go. I used it for years, and had relatively little issues tbh. Most of them I think are hardware related as I’ll have similar issues in other distros and even windows.
The devs have done some goofs yes. Things like letting certs expire, and as mentioned already, potential issues with aur. But, I remember having aur issues even with vanilla arch in the past.
Using fedora currently though, and I don’t think I’ll switch anytime soon.
I have manjaro running on six machines. No problems that were not Just part of learning. Two of those computers were for testing different distros… All ended up with Manjaro.
Hate is for people that don’t create, or improve their own world.
While on one hand Manjaro is very polished. Some things they do is questionable. Like the time they suggested to change your date and time because they let their repo keys expire. Or accidentally DDOS the AUR. Just to name some. The Manjaro team has a rather bad track record of these things.
I’d recommend Alpine and running it headless. Realistically you’d need 4GB+ of ram to run a modern desktop session so that’s not ideal. However running Alpine headless will leave you with 800M to run programs.
You can still run a GUI desktop on it but I’d recommend having a nice sized swap partition/file to make up for it. It’ll be slow as soon as you hit the 1GB memory and starting swapping out.
It’s not the desktop that needs 4 GB, it’s large apps like modern browser or office. The desktop will run fine on 1 GB. May want to look into Midori and Abiword as alternatives.
If you can run the Raspberry Pi Desktop that would be good. Wayland and I think very light.
I am thinking about installing that on Fedora, rebranding and all, to have an actually small Wayland Desktop, because the current options are either WMs or bigger Desktops
Real reason for the hate: The Linux community is overly focused on tribalism and has a console-wars mindset where what I’m using is obviously the best and everything else must be flawed and terrible. Manjaro is probably fine for most use cases.
…although I’d still suggest just using base Arch instead. :)

Let me put it like this: it’s about learning curve. Arch is relatively easy to begin with, but NixOS gets much easier the more nix you learn.
What do I mean about that? Imagine having to patch something, which can be the thing. On arch you’d have to replace a package, which could lead to issues and conflicts, whereas NixOS gives you the option to keep two or even more versions of the same library, because it does not rely on your traditional UNIX path.
But with this super power comes a catch. You have to learn a programming language and learn how the nix store operates, which is a pretty high learning curve. Also, NixOS suffers from a governance issue and going by the documentation is like shooting in the dark.
That being said, the best manual for NixOS is GitHub, searching for anything and filtering by the nix language. You’ll see a ton of varying systems, be they workstations or servers.
And no matter what all the warnings say, no, flakes aren’t EXPERIMENTAL or UNSTABLE, but rather CONTENTIOUS internally. Again: I love NixOS, but they gotta fix their governance issues.
As a recent NixOS convert coming from Bazzite (Kinoite/Silverblue with user friendly daily driver and gaming tweaks), and before that mostly Arch-based distros, I’d say it boils down to the tradeoff between having way more control over reproducibility and having to deep dive into the often poorly documented domain specific rabbit hole that is Nix. If you’re comfortable with going out of your way to learn, looking for examples, reading source code to find out what options you can use or how stuff works, it can absolutely be worth it but it’s a steep price to pay for sure.
I personally adore what Nix sets out to solve and find it extremely rewarding to learn. Plus, as a developer, I enjoy puzzling out how to get stuff done and don’t mind diving into the source if I need to, so it works for me. I’d absolutely prefer solid documentation, of course, but it’s not a deal breaker.
When it comes to software, the Nix repo has a staggering amount of prebuilt binaries ready to download (which you can search here) and it’s often not too hard to hack together your own reproducible package if you want after you get comfortable enough with it. At least for my use cases, I haven’t really missed much from my days using Arch and the AUR. If anything, I appreciate how much more consistent it tends to be in comparison.
If you, like myself, go for a flake (yet another rabbit hole within a rabbit hole) based setup and point to the unstable repo, you basically get a fully reproducible, easy to update and rollback rolling release not too dissimilar to using Arch with auto btrfs snapshots enabled. That’s how I used to do Arch and it feels pretty familiar.

Edit: I forgot to add but I find a nice way to get comfortable without fully commiting is using Nix as a package manager on any old distro. You could install it on Endeavour (I recommend this method) and play around with Home Manager, use it as a dotfiles manager on steroids, have it declaratively install and manage the CLI apps you can’t live without and whatnot, see how you like it. That’s how I started, I have a common HM config I’ve so far used with Debian at work, Ubuntu running under WSL when I’m on Windows and now NixOS itself.
WSL is great for me. Not as fast as being in native Linux but if you’re stuck in windows it’s a impressively seamless tool to just have available. I use it for convenience so I don’t have to have a second machine next to me all day
Yeah, it’s a terrible thing that you have to do this to get your city into the weather app, but I simply love the fact that you can do that, whereas on some proprietary system, you might wait months for the fix.
KDE is very receptive to community help! I can only think of one specific example in KDE history where a developer dragged their feet in the mud about a change the community wanted/submitted pull requests for, and thats the vertical HTML indicator bar in kmail.
The only one I can find is TILVids, which has a few of the bigger Linux content creators but not much more than that. Content worth watching is really the one thing PeerTube is lacking, and that has to come from users, but that’s really a catch-22. You need more quality content to bring in more users, but you need more users to provide that quality content.
On top of that, not many unique users are going to be drawn to a platform that can’t provide avenues for monetization and which costs money to run on top of that, even with all the policies at YouTube all these creators whine about in every other video, which they only mostly whine about because it affects their monetization. So it’s either live with YouTube’s policies reducing your potential income or live with a negative income to set up or join a PeerTube instance: slightly reduced profit vs guaranteed loss. They’ll pick the slightly reduced profit every time.
Even further, the ones who get kicked off of YouTube and need to find an alternative or care enough about “free speech” to branch out are… mostly niche creators, to put it politely, and the unique content they provide to these alternative platforms tends to discourage other creators who still have YouTube channels from syncing their channels from YouTube to PeerTube in order to not be associated with those more niche creators. Other platforms such as Rumble and Odysee have similar issues. That said, PeerTube does have an advantage over Rumble/Odysee in this regard, in that instances that want to avoid that type of content can moderate and set up their federation to limit that association, but at that point they may just find it too much effort to put into bringing in too small an audience to be worth it.
The Fediverse appears to work well enough for user generated content that doesn’t take much effort or expense to provide, such as Twitter, Facebook or Reddit-type content, as the rise of Mastodon and Lemmy are showing, but when users have to put in the work and expense of publishing a video, the return on investment of PeerTube (in both money and views) compared to just staying on YouTube may just be too small to work.
But theoretically, if someone set up an instance to host their videos, they could serve banner ads right? Wouldn’t that at least partly diminish the monetization problem?
