Tau, in A response to the "Boycott Wayland" article

The only thing to boycott are GNOME dev’s mentality when it comes to things outside their DE (especially Wayland protocol adoption). It’s slowing Wayland development a lot

theshatterstone54,

I agree. I am personally a fan of server side decorations. I use tiling Window managers which means I do not need to have extra buttons (browsers) or bars (looking at you, thunar) to close, minimise of fullscreen an app. Heck, one of the reasons to use a tiling wm is to maximise the usage of screen real estate and with these extra bars and buttons you’re taking some of that away!

InstallGentoo,

…gitlab.io/…/on-the-gnome-project-and-my-way-or-t…

They have no intention of sparing a thought for anything that isn’t gnome. It’s a shame considering their corporate funding and influence over the linux desktop.

kittenzrulz123, in change my mind: Ubuntu does the same thing as Android

I’ll address all your points

  1. It’s just GNOME but slightly modified
  2. How? Gnome includes a terminal that technically exists (even if slow)
  3. Just use sudo

As for the differences

  1. Ubuntu is open source (Android =/= AOSP)
  2. Sudo is enabled
  3. Ubuntu repository
  4. Gnome is a proper desktop (and can even be a traditional desktop with extensions)
  5. Can be heavily modified
  6. Telemetry can be disabled
  7. The most controversial feature (snaps) can be removed
  8. Ubuntu uses the standard Linux kernel
  9. It’s a desktop operating system
  10. It’s not owned by a multi billion dollar ad company
drwankingstein,

(Android =/= AOSP)

can you elaborate on this? this is the first i’ve heard this take. rather I would say Android =/= gservices

kittenzrulz123,

Android generally refers to a complete Android system that includes Google software and services along with additional OEM bloat. Meanwhile ASOP is extremely bare bones and parts of it are being abandoned.

drwankingstein,

I guess AOSP is barebones, but it’s not like anything is being abandoned that matters, AOSP itself is still alive, kicking, and thriving. Interesting to hear that people consider Android, AOSP + proprietary bits. It’s not something i’ve used myself

Markaos,

Interesting to hear that people consider Android, AOSP + proprietary bits.

Google owns the Android trademark, and they won’t let you officially call any OS that doesn’t meet their requirements Android. And their requirements include Gapps among other things. That means AOSP is not Android.

KillerTofu,

Sure. They’re exactly the same then.

this is way more beautiful than i expected. amazing work!

to everyone reporting this post as “malware”: 🤣 it really isn’t.

(i read it carefully before running it… if you don’t comprehend something like this, refraining from running it is a good choice.)

edit: lmao at the downvotes! For fun I ported it to Python… this version produces identical output to the original, but stops after a couple thousand seconds instead of running forever. and it is sadly 36 bytes longer.

(maybe the python version helps convince a few people it isn’t malware?)

A screencap on peertube would convince me it does not blow my ears off.

Makka, in gamescope through the heroic launcher is WAY better than steam

I pretty new to Linux gaming but I love it. Currently playing games directly from Steam and Blizzard games via Bottles. Please help me out with a few questions. What is the use case for gamescope? What is the use case for Heroic? Is it instead of Bottles/Lutris?

ILikeBoobies,

Game scope is a micro-compositor, it’s how the Steamdeck handles games and probably steam. Basically the settings there, you can have the game in 1080p but upscaled by FSR/DLSS to 4k. The difference is that only the game is upscaled, not the whole system

Heroic is a launcher for Epic, Amazon, and GOG

Yes, it can be seen as an alternative to Bottles/Lutris but the stores and libraries are baked in

Game scope is a micro-compositor

What is that?

it’s how the Steamdeck handles games and probably steam.

So why would I use this in HGL instead of Steam?

ILikeBoobies, (edited )

What is that?

Displaying stuff to the screen, the game will tell it “draw this”

So why would I use this in HGL instead of Steam?

If your library is in the other things then you can take advantage of the technology in those games

Gamescope should have lower latency in going from game to screen

Pantherina, in Looking for a "couch laptop"

Any chromebook that supports Coreboot. Absolutely unrepairable and very low storage, but good Linux support and coreboot!

mrchromebox.tech/devices

13617,

But be aware a ton of features that would work on ChromeOS don’t work, I’ve done this to 4 and all have separate problems

Pantherina,

Very interesting! I had an Acer Chromebook I couldnt even open up, so I got rid of it as fast as possible.

Could you share experiences?

  • keyboard layouts, missing buttons
  • what features are missing?
  • anything else thats good to know?

alonely0, (edited ) in Overheating laptop, should I try a lighweight distro - which one?

What you need to do is clean the dust off of your fans and ventilation filters (check guides or figure it as you go, but make sure to disconnect the battery and the fans from the mobo as soon as you open it). Then, repaste it with good thermal paste or some liquid metal if you’re feeling confident. I have liquid metal (thermal grizzly condoctonaut) on both of my laptops, and one of them which had overheated since day one, doesn’t anymore.

Irkiosan, in Overheating laptop, should I try a lighweight distro - which one?

I sounds like you have to apply new cooling paste. This might be a pain to do on a laptop but certainly worth it. Another distro probably won’t do the trick, whether it’s minimal or not.

velox_vulnus, (edited ) in How to fix?

But those aren’t a part of the PulseAudio package in general - at least from what I know. Looks more like LADSPA and CALF plugins to me. Maybe you’ve installed them accidentally?

yournamehere,

i needed pulse audio and those plugins to get some shitty monitor to work and not sound too bad. lsp plugins was the only thing that worked.

velox_vulnus,

I’m going to install Linux Mint on a VM and see what’s going wrong with yours. But when you’re dealing with older native package managers, you’ll come across packages that litter your desktop. This isn’t the case with modern ones like NixOS or Guix, however. I see that you’re adhering to UNIX philosophy, in which case, you should use independent distros like Devuan, Hyperbola, etc.

yournamehere,

oh ok. thanks. i am using different linux distros on different machines and devuan is cool for me. yet i was supprised not to find signal messenger at all anymore in search on mint. its not last in the list but not in the results at all anymore.

velox_vulnus, (edited )

If you scroll down in the comments below, you’ll understand why - OP doesn’t like corporate backed software.

Mikelius, in How to exclude SSH port from VPN so you can remote access while VPN is up

Out of curiosity, why not just leave ssh access to the local network so you can only reach it by VPN in the first place? Note I might be misunderstanding what the goal of this was, so feel free to lmk if I’m off the field with my question lol

luthis,

I have protonVPN, therefore no way to forward packets from their endpoint to my pc.

WeAreAllOne,

Proton has port forwarding anyhow…

luthis, (edited )

I was surprised to learn this was a thing, impressive, however;

‘the VPN app sends a request to the VPN server to open a random port’

‘the active port number will change when you disconnect and reconnect the VPN.’

This will not work OOTB with Plex for example, you would need to change the port in the app every time. It becomes difficult to serve anything statically, like a XMPP server or anything that doesn’t let you configure the port.

You also would need to be at home to check which port you’ve been assigned eg if the connection drops and you get assigned a new port, defeating the whole ‘remote access’ thing.

Mikelius,

Oh gotcha, I misunderstood this post as talking about a self hosted VPN, not external provider. That explains it! :D
