Installing Debian took like 5 mins, doing all the configuration and stuff.

I wonder why the stopped using letter prefixes for new flavors. “Ubuntu Budgie” sounds kinda lame for a great flavor of Ubuntu.

Amends1782, in An apt quote for Terry the king

Highly highly recommended that all Linux enjoyer’s look into his work. Its truly remarkable, he wrote EVERYTHING from scratch, he even made his own language variant based off of C called HolyC. He made the kenel from scratch, the drivers, the compiller, the man was a savant. Very very sadly, also suffered from paranoid schizophrenia, and died relating to it. He had mini games in his TempleOS that he made with just text files and sprites. Truly one of the most talented devs of all time.

Tartas1995,

He is the most obvious case for a good mental health system. That could have went far with enough support. The world lost a great coder

Amends1782,

Agreed fully

learn.microsoft.com/en-us/linux/install

Only want to run Linux as your primary operating system? If you are good with a slightly more complicated install process and don’t need access to Windows tools (like Outlook, Teams, Word, PowerPoint, etc), you can run Linux on bare metal to access the full potential of your hardware without any overhead from virtualization or emulation.

bestonecrazy,

They know they cannot stop those determined. So they worded some parts to try to make it sound like “it will inconvenience you and Linux is hard” so that people are like “Ok, I will not do it if it is hard”.

barsoap,

And that’s just a subset of Debian distros. Debian is like 1/2 of the height of the tree

I remember Team Fortress 2 has a console command where you could set your voice gain stupidly high and blow out people’s ears by just being in voice chat.

Actually, I went to a Yoko concert once… my gf bought the tickets, don’t look at me like that, all wanted was p*ssy 😭.

gentooer,

You are on the internet, you can say pussy here

Hyggyldy, in aplay /dev/urandom

I have ear damage because games love to release nuclear bomb levels of sound when they boot for the first time.

zaphodb2002,

Seriously, this should be illegal. Every game blasts you with full volume and no way to turn it down until later. Then the reasonable setting is like 10%. I’m in the habit of taking my headphones off when I start a new game.

@VinesNFluff@pawb.social avatar

Was the latter, used Linux because my computer sucked. So it was for some four years.

Once I got a real computer… Going back to Windows hurt. But I stuck to it because gaming.

As soon as Proton/DXVK started maturing, I knew I’d go full Linux forever.

ThrowawayPermanente, in aplay /dev/urandom

Went shooting with rednecks once. Fun at the time but maybe not a great idea in hindsight.

I don’t use Linux cause I want to, I use linux cause I hate windows more, we ain’t the same either sis

bitsplease, in Updates

So, what? We’re just straight up making shit up about Mac now when trashing it on Lemmy?

Its literally been over a decade since the last time Apple charged for an OS update

Established_Trial,

And I believe they stopped charging for OS updates before Microsoft did, though I could be misremembering.

bitsplease,

They 100% did

Don’t get me wrong, there’s plenty to gripe about with apple, just like every tech company, but I swear half the complaints I hear about Apple products on lemmy are either outdated or just plain wrong

For some reason the anti-Apple circle jerk is supercharged on Lemmy. I’ll never understand why people get themselves so worked up over a brand they never have to do business with

XDG Base Directory Specification is not new. come on!

wiki.archlinux.org/title/XDG_Base_Directory#Hardc… 😞

brian,

What does this mean though? Sure it’s not new, but does it make it less of a mess?

Confetti_Camouflage,
@Confetti_Camouflage@pawb.social avatar

The XDG Base Directory Specification is a set of guidelines to tell application developers where they should store their application’s config files, cache, etc.

There are many applications that don’t follow the guidelines and put their files in a hidden folder directly in your home directory, which is what the guidelines are trying to combat.

miss_brainfart,
@miss_brainfart@lemmy.ml avatar

Sometimes that folder isn’t even hidden, either

cyanarchy,

Really just disrespectful on the developer’s part.
